Carolyn is the founder and owner of John F. Blair, Publisher, of Winston-Salem, the publisher of this book, and many others of equally high quality.Armchair travelers, rejoice! Here's your guide to Revolutionary War landmarks in South Carolina, organized into 21 thematic driving tours. Each of the tours is organized as a day trip, and features simple routes that will take you past some of the most important architectural and natural landmarks in colonial South Carolina. If you think that Sherman took care of what Cornwallis left behind, you should take a look at this book. While most of the fighting that took place in the Revolutionary War happened in this state, the cultural sites remaining from the period are numerous and diverse. The text is written with a strong emphasis on place, to give you a real feeling for what happened, and what existed back in the late 1770s. Architecture and battlefields are highly featured throughout, but don't expect listings of hotels and restaurants. That's not the purpose of this guide. There are a few simple maps and some small black & white photographs, but the text is the real feature of the book.I recommend this book for serious cultural tourists, architecture enthusiasts and architectural historians.
Wonderful stories, great sites . . . BUT! I do not think any one actually checked out the directions by driving them. We found errors when attempting to use the guide and out of frustration abandoned the book for google maps. Its a great idea but not great in execution.
Both the books on the South and North Carolina Revolutionary War sites are amazing. I drove one tour and traveled to other related sites this summer. The material adds so much depth to the experience of visiting the southern operations of the Revolutionary War. Visiting and studying the information took quite a bit of time for me. I am sure, after reading much of the book, that Barefoot went to all these sites. Even if he didn't the research is so well done, it must have taken forever to compile it all. These are great books and essential reads for the Revolutionary War enthusiast.
Usually when people think of South Carolina, they think of the Civil War. But South Carolina played an important part in the Revolutionary War too. This book give you insight into the Revolutionary Sites, more so than a brochure. I enjoyed the detail and insite presented by the author. I would recommend it to anyone going to South Carolina and are looking for something a little different.
Most tour books are just dry litanies of major historic sites. This book does that plus provide interesting little-known facts in a style of storytelling from times past. The detailed directions are also very useful. I could almost see the places and people described and learned more about revolutionary history from this book than I did in school. Highly recommended read.
