I used this textbook for the environmental health core class at my school of public health, and found it to be excellent--probably one of the best textbooks I've seen in 2.5 years of graduate school. I had the advantage of having the author as my instructor, but even without Dr. Maxwell teaching the course the book would have been just as useful. First, it's extremely well-written, which should be a given for any textbook but usually is not the case. The fact that she makes few, if any, grammatical errors and writes in a very clear manner makes reading material that is not intuitive a lot easier. Second, she incorporates figures, diagrams, and graphics nicely to add to the text. Some books seem to add graphics just because they think they should, but they don't really add anything content wise. Third, she has an extensive glossary of terms for virtually every major concept introduced in the book, which is incredibly helpful if you're trying to study this material.I don't agree with the review that says she doesn't talk enough about regulation. This is meant to be an introductory level textbook, and the outline of regulatory bodies and what they oversee is sufficient for the purposes of an introduction. Environmental health policy is not necessarily straightforward, and an in-depth discussion should be saved for a more advanced or policy-specific course. Finally, I think that the concepts presented in this book are essential for everyone to learn. Things like the environmental toxins in every day products we use, the food we eat, etc. should be a part of general curriculum so that people are aware and can make informed decisions as to how they want to live their lives. Also, the lack of sustainable modern day practices and the impact on future generations is important information for all of us, and this book gives a nice overview of both the problems and potential solution. I found myself feeling grateful that this was a required course for my graduate program, and that I had such a great textbook to facilitate learning the material.

Although it's required for school I really enjoyed reading this book, very well written by the author and isn't boring at all.

Thank you!

This book is not as comprehensive as Moeller's Environmental Health. The author has a tendency to make unsubstantiated assertions making the book less well integrated than one would hope for. An example, she does a very nice introduction to the hydrologic cycle but never really develops a line of thought about its important to the range of environmental issues to which it is linked. That would have required maybe 10-15 more pages. Another example where further development would improve the text is the author's presentation on the precautionary principle. She never discusses the Rio meeting and starts discussing precautionary principle in terms of the Wingspread Conference which occurred much later and was not a globally represented meeting. She also does not adequately relate the precautionary principle to risk assessment. At the same time the author does a relatively good job of reviewing high points of Environmental Health. Perhaps if the auther had expanded the text so that her assertions could have supporting documentation, and lines of thought were more fully developed, it would be a better text. Throughout the text the author very superficially introduces significant environmental laws associated with the topic under discussion. For people in public health it may be useful to present the background to the laws, and the regulations that are associated with them.

Everything was perfect! I would buy from these folks again. Not a bad price, either. Best price that I saw.

Easy to read and well written.

Excellent condition

An excellent book, laying down the fundamentals into research and practice of environmental health.

Luke is straight, except he kisses Ryan. Zach was straight, but now is bi, but still Luke's best friend. Luke outed Ryan, but has allowed Zach and Ryan to date since breaking up with Ryan who he was fake dating. Luke likes Lydia. Zack likes everyone, but will not talk about other gays in the area. The baseball team is confused. Some teachers are supportive. Some families are not because they do not know. More than a scholarship is at stake for Luke. Ryan is in love. Luke helps Ryan and his father tear down a barn that broke Ryan's leg.If this makes sense or you do not love teen angst, read something else. But this book and the sequel are the best examples of teen angst around, and I love these books better than I love Luke and Ryan. Holding hands takes on new meaning and Zack is a real best friend. If only they knew who was what and with who. Good thing it's a small town. This could get complicated.

A fun (and funny) look at growing up and finding love in high school, complete with all the overthinking, assumptions, misassumptions, drama, ridiculousness and general self induced anxieties that are simply part of growing up.Star athlete Luke finds himself in danger of being expelled for violating his school’s zero-tolerance policy and as his plans to get himself out of trouble steadily spiral out of his control the whole school finds itself caught up in all the conflicting gossip and drama. It finally falls to his friends and reluctant fake ‘boyfriend’ to get him out of it, in the process showing each of them their own truth. None of the absurdity and contrivance of the narrative arc or the characters feels out of place, quite the opposite. There is a sweet genuineness of it all that reminds me of the absurd drama of my high school years and the head shaking ‘truth is stranger than fiction’, ‘nobody would believe it if they hadn’t been there’ that accompanies my former classmates get togethers. What is particularly excellent is how tight the writing by the author fleshes out the cast of supporting characters and their own revelations.

I read it for free on Kindle Unlimited, but I liked it so much that I decided to purchase the book as well. When I first started reading Mr. Manning’s novel, I thought it would be a good story and quick read like his previous short stories but eventually after getting more into the book, I couldn’t put it down. I was excited to find out if Ryan and Luke will find a HEA ending. I liked how the author put a curveball into the story by having another male suitor come into the fold. This is an interesting dynamic of how your true feelings come to light after a lie. Wonderful work. Good funny quotes like: “It’s a make a wish type deal for underprivileged nerds,” said by Ryan on Chapter 3.Can’t wait to read the free extra chapter on the author’s website. This part has a very cute revelation.

Finn did a great job giving these kids funny conversations. When it was time to get real, I believed that too. This book appears to be two books joined as one. Part 2 could have been touched up so it wasn’t so repetitive for the first few chapters. I was invested in the story though and wanted to know how it would end. 3.5 for barns.

Love Ryan and Luke. The author did a great job capturing their awkwardness and emotions. It was pretty obvious how Luke felt to everyone but him, which is rather true to form. Boys are usually dumb to those kind of things no matter their age. Can’t wait for book 2 to see their relationship bloom.

There may be a few hiccups here and there, but the great writing and enjoyable story were more than enough to overlook them. The drama and confusion and mood swings of high school seemed very real to me. Adding a suitor for Ryan, and how it make Luke jealous, was fun.

A,ton if high school drama. Almost so much it gets old. The going back and forth about gave me whiplash. The story is okay and writing good but I really wished for more closure.

It seems as though there is a template for writing a gay high school romance story. It consists of one jock and one nerd, and that despite all odds, they find a love connection. The only variable that writers need to supply is how the boys get together. Usually, it’s the dumb jock getting tutored by the smart nerd to save his scholarship and then he falls in love with the nerd.In this tired cliche of gay YA fiction, Finn Manning takes a somewhat unique approach in this version. In One Little Word, the jock pretends to be gay in order to save his scholarship and then falls in love with the nerd. The continuing series is predictable. Here’s what I’m expecting: In the second book, the relationship solidifies but faces adversity from the jock’s teammates, parents and small-minded townsfolk. In the third book, the boys go to college together but jealousy threatens to destroy the relationship.Finn does give dimension to his main characters and makes the story a fun, easy read, but due to a lack of originality and the abundance of errors in spelling, and missing and misplaced words, I cannot justify rating this book any higher than three stars.Finn Manning is still on my radar and I hope to discover more originality and better editing in his books.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine: A Novel, by Gail Honeyman

From School Library Journal

Office worker Eleanor adheres to a strict routine that has insulated her from the memories of her traumatic childhood but has not shielded her from loneliness. But after she meets Raymond, she attempts to rediscover her memories and in the process learns how relationships (including those with friends, lovers, and colleagues) operate and that other people can be a source of joy rather than destruction. Readers may find Eleanor odd at first but will feel compassion and root for her as she grapples with severe depression and her painful childhood. Though the novel deals with dark themes, quirky Eleanor's firm bond with Raymond and their adventures lighten the tone. Teens will be spellbound as Eleanor unravels the mystery of her past and develops a sense of self. VERDICT For those seeking a dramatic page-turner combined with a whimsical love story.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

#2,743 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

At first I was interested by the idea of seeing the world through the perspective of someone on the Autism Spectrum, but then it becomes apparent that this is a human in excruciating psychological pain. How anyone could actually read this and refer to it as funny is beyond me. As the picture of the abuse and trauma that Eleanor suffered at the hands of a mentally ill mother unfolded, I felt emotionally assaulted by the author. Finally, we are supposed to believe that a few therapy sessions and a nice man will quickly undo all the damage and Eleanor will be healed, instantly stop drinking, and start living like a 'normal' person.I read it to the end for book club, but it left me feeling like crawling into the back of a dark closet and sitting there for a day or two. (I went outside and tried to recover with some therapeutic gardening instead)

Eleanor Oliphant is one of the most interesting characters that I have read in a while. She is blunt. Very blunt. She lacks social skills and tends to spout off facts to people just having conversations. She likes her routine. Every Friday, stop and buy pizza and vodka. And every Wednesday, she talks to her mother. Those are never very good for Eleanor. Her mother is mean and angry and leaves her feeling less than. Something happened to Eleanor when she was a child. Something that left her with a scar on her face and moving from foster home to foster home. Does she remember it all or is it her coping mechanism? Things start to change in her life when her company’s IT guy, Raymond, and Eleanor help an old man who has passed out in the street. Family is the one thing that she has been missing. There is so much to Eleanor. In the beginning, I thought that I didn’t care too much for her but as time went on and she opened up, well, I fell in love with her. I would venture to say that she is on the autism spectrum. What a sad story she had lived and what a wonderful world opening up for her. Beautifully written and just a lovely story, you will fall in love with Eleanor too.

So this book sweeps you right into quirky but sad Eleanor's life and for me, I was glad of it. I loved the way the book has just the right amount of detail and let's Eleanor's ways reveal moments of humor, sadness, strength, and vulnerability. I laughed and cried and cherished the journey with her to the end.

I wish there were words for how much I loved this contemporary fiction/ chick-lit / Brit-lit novel.SUMMARYEleanor Oliphant is the definition of 'socially awkward.' Think Sheldon from Big Bang Theory minus his little band of nerds and giant ego. Awkward!!! She is never sure if people are being sarcastic or serious. She gives a lot of unsolicited advice, thinking she is being helpful when she's really being obnoxious, then she mentally (and occasionally orally) notes what she perceives as others poor manners or stupidity in said person. She's hilarious without meaning to be.From the very beginning, the reader knows that things are not 100% right for Eleanor. She has serious "Mummy Issues" (love the British Speak, mummy issues sound so much more sophisticated than mommy issues!), her coworkers blatantly make fun of her, she has no friends, she relies on vodka to get her through the weekend and has these mysterious scars on her face which are significant enough to cause people to stare. On a very rare night out, she goes to a concert and completely falls for one of the musicians without even so much as exchanging a single word with him.Eleanor begins a journey of physical self improvement in order to prep herself to meet this musician. Her journey includes a hilarious visit to a waxing salon, a couple extremely uncomfortable "practice" social outings and a few lol worthy shopping trips. In addition to the outward improvements, Eleanor decides to open herself to new experiences so she will be ready when she meets her musician in person. Her newfound openness comes in handy when, after years of loneliness, she accidentally stumbles into two new unlikely friendships.Although there are many truly amusing parts in this story, it also has a very serious side, particularly when the reader learns of Eleanor's past and the origins of her scars. Author, Gail Honeyman, slowly doles out the details of Eleanor's heartbreaking backstory leaving the reader 100% on Team Eleanor. I, for one, was cheering her on and celebrating her growth as though she were my real life friend.WHAT I LOVEDSince I gave this book 5 Stars, and I rarely ever do, clearly I loved EVERYTHING about it. But here are just a few specific things which I loved:The whole thing with Bobbie Brown makeup. She was soooooo clueless that she had no idea who Bobbie Brown is and at one point she 'questioned Ms Brown's work ethic' since Bobbie never seemed to be at her makeup counter.I LOVED Eleanor's observations on other people and how she often missed the point so significantly and then she thought everyone but her was crazy. Super entertaining.I loved how Eleanor just spoke her mind without concern for social convention. That was funny enough, but reading others reactions to her comment was the icing on the cake. Some people laughed and found her refreshing, others thought she was crazy or rude. The story itself was just so darn good!!! In my opinion, a good book in this genre is one which makes the reader laugh, think deeply, feel significant empathy for the characters and stays with the reader long after completing the story. For me, this book did that, and more. I was so sad to see it end. I miss her already.WHAT I DIDN'T LOVEThis book got my 5 star rating which means that if there was something I didn't love about the book, the good outweighed the bad so heavily that I forgot anything I didn't like.OVERALLI LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!

Sticky Church (Leadership Network Innovation Series), by Larry Osborne

From the Back Cover

In Sticky Church, author and pastor Larry Osborne makes the case that closing the back door of your church is even more important than opening the front door wider. He offers a time-tested strategy for doing so: sermon-based small groups that dig deeper into the weekend message and tightly velcro members to the ministry. It's a strategy that enabled Osborne's congregation to grow from a handful of people to one of the larger churches in the nation--without any marketing or special programming. Sticky Church tells the inspiring story of North Coast Church's phenomenal growth and offers practical tips for launching your own sermon-based small group ministry. Topics include: Why stickiness is so important Why most of our discipleship models don't work very well Why small groups always make a church more honest and transparent What makes groups grow deeper and sticker over time Sticky Church is an ideal book for church leaders who want to start or retool their small group ministry--and velcro their congregation to the Bible and each other

Larry Osborne is a pastor’s pastor and a leader’s leader. He has successfully made and multiplied disciples in the same local church for over thirty years. Whenever he writes a book I read it; re-read it; and make sure my staff and leaders read it as well. Larry started with a small struggling church and has successfully developed multiplying disciples of Christ in San Diego and all over the world through their simple church model of assimilation and discipleship through their intentional and strategic implementation of small groups. In Sticky Church Osborne writes about a simple strategic process for developing a small group ministry that is extremely effective in assimilating attenders and new comers in the church and helping them become connected and committed to making and multiplying fully devoted followers of Christ for the long-haul.Part 1 is composed of four chapters whereby Osborne makes a compelling case for a simple model and strategy in developing a “sticky church.” A sticky church is a church where people “stick” or stay because they immediately become convinced and unified around the vision; and live out this vision in the context of a small group. In Osborne’s church in Vista, California (a suburb of San Diego) 80% of church attenders (over 7,000 adults) become committed to their small groups - what they call “growth groups.” The whole idea of “stickiness” is keeping people in the church (what he calls “closing the back door”) so that you have a high retention of attenders who stay and grow because they commit to a small group that’s committed to their growth as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here are some insightful quotes from the first four chapters:“But we’ve often become so focused on reaching people that we’ve forgotten the importance of keeping people.”“What does Jesus’ parable about the four soils have to say about the way we do church? To my thinking it says a lot. And one of the most important things it says about churches is that stickiness matters.”“They [the principles in this book and the sermon-based model used by North Coast Church) worked just as well when we were a small church of less than two hundred adults as they do today in a multisite megachurch with more than seven thousand in weekend attendance.”“Almost all our growth has come by word of mouth.”“We’ve simply tried to serve our people so well that they’ll want to bring their friends, without needing to be asked to do so.”“Everything we do is aimed at helping the Christians we already have grow stronger in Christ. But everything is done in such a way that their non-Christian friends will understand all that we’re saying and doing.”“Bottom line: We’ve tried to create a perfect storm for come-and-see evangelism while velcroing newcomers for long-term spiritual growth.”“In fact, the most important number to know about North Coast Church is not the weekend attendance. It’s the percentage of adults who participate in one of our small groups. Since 1985 that number has equaled 80 percent of our average weekend attendance.”“It’s as though they assumed (people that think that sermon-based small groups only work in a megachurch) that North Coast was always big church—or at least became one overnight…Not so…North Coast grew quite slowly in the early days. It took five years to go from 130-180. It took another five years to reach 750.”“This is not an anti-marketing or anti-programs book. It’s a pro-stickiness book.”“What matters is not the size of the church or the slickness of the programming . What matters is that those who come find a ministry and relationships worthy of spontaneous word-of-mouth recommendations. When that happens, a church is primed to hold on to the people it already has and the people they bring with them.”“A sticky church needs a healthy leadership team composed of people who genuinely like one another, share the same vision, and pull in the same direction (talking about the first big change necessary to developing a sticky church - retaining new comers).”“The second big change was in the way I taught and led our congregation. Focusing on the front door aimed everything at two kinds of people: the not-yet Christian or the super saint who was ready to help me charge the hill. There wasn't much room for people who came to Christ but didn’t grow at a fast enough pace or carried lots of old baggage.”“The third change involved launching a small group ministry focus primarily on building significant relationships rather than growing the church.”“Instead of celebrating how many people came, the most important measurement would be how many came back.”“Churches that close the back door effectively do so by serving their congregations so well that the people don’t want to leave. And happy sheep are incurable word-of-mouth marketers.”“Whatever you do to reach people you have to continue to do to keep them (this is why they keep their ministries simple, consistent, and excellent - North Coast doesn’t do a lot of special events or programming).”“High-powered front-door programs can have the unintended consequences of sending a message that some weekends and programs are for brining guests—and the rest aren’t.”“There’s a second unintended obstacle that highly programmed front-door churches can put in the way of natural evangelism. If most of the people who come to Christ come as a result of a complex and high-powered event, it sends a subtle message that it takes lots of time, planning, and money to lead someone to Christ.”“Instead of complex assimilation programs, a sticky church simply needs to provide plenty of ministry on-ramps to which members can easily connect the friends they’ve invited.”In Part 2 Osborne writes five chapters on “How Small Groups Change Everything.” Here are some important points from this section:“Most spiritual growth doesn’t come as a result of a training program or set curriculum. It comes as a result of life putting us in what I like to call a need-to-know or need-to-grow situation.”“The focus of a sermon based small group is not so much on the curriculum as it is on the process.”“The ultimate goal of a sermon-based small group is simply to velcro people to the two things they will need most when faced with a need-to-know or need-to-grow situation: the Bible and other Christians.”“When the New Testament was written, the typical church was so small that it was, in essence, a small group.”“The best tool I’ve ever seen for connecting people to one another and engaging them with the Bible for the long haul is a sermon-based small group. It offers a format that fits the way we spiritually grow, while providing a framework for a healthy and sticky church. Nothing compares.“While many church leaders claim that small groups are an integral part of their ministry, I’ve learned that two simple measurements will always tell me their real place in a ministry’s pecking order: (1) the percentage of adults who attend a small group, and (2) the participation level of senior staff and key lay leaders.”“Getting there (the key to reaching critical mass - that all-important stage at which the full power and benefits of a small group ministry begin to impact the ethos, DNA, and spiritual health of nearly everyone and everything in the church) usually requires that somewhere between 40 to 60 percent of the average weekend adult attendance be involved in a small group. If fewer people participate, small groups will still have a profound effect, but it will be primarily on the individuals in them, not on the entire church.”“Small groups undercut this Holy Man myth (The Holy Man myth is the idea that pastors/clergy somehow have more of a direct hot line to God) because they typically meet in widely dispersed settings. This makes it impossible for the pastor (or any other staff member) to carry out all the pastoral roles and functions. They simply can’t be everywhere at once…As a result, small group leaders inevitably step up and assume roles of spiritual leadership that they would have otherwise deferred to the pastoral staff.”“That not only changes the way small group leaders view themselves; it changes the congregation’s outlook as well. Once people begin to realize that God’s anointing and spiritual power aren’t restricted to the guy who speaks on Sunday, they whine a lot less when he’s not available.”“Another spiritually crippling falsehood that began to lose its grip on our congregation was what I call the Holy Place myth. It’s the idea that God’s presence is somehow greater in some places than in others.”“With the demise of both the Holy Man and the Holy Place myths, our ministry was, for the first time, genuinely unleashed. People started bringing God to the workplace and into their neighborhoods rather than trying to bring everyone to the church building.”“Let’s face it: In most churches there aren’t many opportunities for high-impact, life on life ministry. There are usually few up-front teaching roles, a handful of worship leader positions, and some youth and Sunday school spots to be filled. After that, most roles are pretty much part of the supporting cast, designed more to keep the machine running than to touch lives.”“Small groups open up lots of new opportunities for frontline ministry. At North Coast every group has a leader and a host, most often made up of two couples. That means in every group, we have four people who teach, counsel, disciple, pray, visit hospitals, lead in worship, provide communion, and even baptize members of their little flock—none of which they would do without the platform for ministry we call growth groups.”“As a former youth pastor, I learned long ago that no one steps up until there’s a vacuum that needs to be filled. Every year when my seniors were about to graduate, I would wonder if we’d survive without their leadership. But as soon as they were gone, the juniors and sophomores stepped up—often doing a better job than their departing upperclassmen.”“Still another powerful advantage that small groups can bring is a marked increase in the practice of spiritual disciplines. That’s because a small group takes our good intentions and puts them on the our calendar.”“Here’s the irony: if we canceled our small groups and filled our facility once a week for a prayer meeting with standing-room-only crowds, we’d probably get some great write-ups in the Christian press. But in reality we’d have almost 70% fewer people praying than we already have in our small groups.”“Our young adult dropout rate is a fraction of what I’ve seen in the past. And I’m convinced it’s because we’ve focused on giving our children and youth the powerful gift of a growing mom and dad.”“Sermon-based small groups also made it much easier for our teaching team to keep the entire church focused and headed in the same direction. Whether we’re casting vision, clarifying direction, or simply dealing with an important issue, it’s much easier to get people on the same page and keep them there.”“One reason I want my messages to be more memorable (on why sermon based small groups make the preacher a better preacher and make the sermon go further in people’s lives) is that I want people to apply the important truths and doctrines of the faith. I know that if I can change the way people think, it will change the way they live.”“It’s a relatively short step (for a marginal attender) from listening to a sermon to joining a small group that discusses the sermon he’s already heard. But it’s a much bigger step into a traditional small group Bible study.”“There’s still another advantage that comes with a sermon based small group model. It’s that most people (including the marginally interested and new Christians) come to the meeting far more prepared than they would if they were using a typical workbook or study guide.”Part 3 recounts ten chapters on the Why’s and How’s of Sermon-Based Small Groups and why this model works better than some of the more popular models out there for small groups. Here are some practical realities of sermon based small groups:“A group needs to be small enough that everyone has a chance to contribute, but large enough that no one feels forced to speak up or share more than they want to. That means the ideal size for a group of introverts will tend to be larger than the ideal size for a group of thin-it-and-immediately-say-it extroverts. One needs more people to break the silence. The other needs less people so that there will be some silence.”“The ideal size for a group of married couples is usually twelve to fourteen people. For singles, eight to twelve can be ideal.”“We’ve found that whenever a couples group reaches sixteen people (or a singles group reaches fourteen), attendance becomes predictably inconsistent. It’s strange, but we can have three groups of twelve people, and all thirty-six will be present at almost every meeting. But two groups of sixteen people will hardly ever have all thirty-two show up. Perhaps it has to do with those in the smaller group feeling more needed and feeling a greater sense of responsibility.”“We’ve found that the sermon-based small groups that have the greater life-on-life impact and stay together the longest are always those in which the friendships are deepest. That’s why we tell people to choose a group primarily according to who else is in it rather than where or when it meets.”“Although we allow people to pick any group they want as long as there’s room in the group, we’ve found that those who make their choice based on a convenient location or time have a much lower stick rate than those who look for a group with which they already share an interest or station in life.”“In almost every case, the first thing you’d notice at one of our small group meetings is that it starts with some light refreshments as people arrive—especially something to drink.”“Once the meeting starts, most groups spend fifteen to thirty minutes sharing prayer requests and updating one another on what has been going on in their lives…As a group jells, this part of the meeting tends to expand and move to a much deeper level. In new groups, it can be perfunctory and shallow at first. But that’s fine by us. We don’t try to force depth. We simply provide an opportunity for great depth and vulnerability t show up when both the group and the Holy Spirit are ready.”“The next part of the meeting is dedicated to the study and discussion of the previous weekend’s sermon…To improve the quality of the discussion, we work hard to make sure that everyone comes with the answers to the study questions already filled out. One of the most effective ways we do this is by having our leaders periodically ask people to read what they’ve written down, especially if it appears that someone is deviating from their original answer.”“The homework (discussion/study guide) always consists of three types of questions: Getting to Know Me (These questions offer a nonthreatening look into our past or current life situations. They’re designed to help us get to know each other at a safe but accelerated pace), Into the Bible (These questions take the group to biblical passages that are either complementary or parallel to the main text of the sermon but were not covered in the message), and Application (These are designed to take home the main point or points of the sermon and drive them home. They typically deal with attitudes or life-change issues).”“We ask every group to take at least one service project a year (the ideal is two) and to have at least one social gathering per quarter).”“As a rule of thumb, most people will participate in only two time slots per week. No matter what the third meeting is for or when it takes place, it’s hard to get anyone to show up.”Osborne goes on to discuss how to overcome the time crunch of developing and sustaining leaders; determining your primary purpose; how groups can grow deeper; why dividing groups isn’t the best strategy; how to find and develop leaders; how to train leaders; and these five key questions to ask before starting small groups:“Who are you trying to reach?” By that I mean, “Specifically who do you imagine being in your small groups? Who is likely to opt out? Who are you willing to leave out?”“What you plan to do in your meetings?” The options are endless. But once I know what happens in a small group, I can predict with uncanny accuracy who will come and who won’t.“How well does who you want to reach match up with what you plan to do?”“How do you think people are best trained to live out the Christian life and best prepared for leadership?”The final question to ask before launching a new or revamped small group ministry is, “Who already does what we want to do well—and does it in a church we would go to if we lived in the area?”There is a large appendix section in the back of the book containing helps for the following topics: (1) Writing Great Questions; (2) Sample Sermon Note Sheet and Study Questions; (3) Sample Growth Group Covenant; (4) End-of-the-quarter Evaluation Form; (5) Leader Training Topics; (6) Leader Responsibilities; (7) Host Responsibilities; (8) A List of NT “One Anothers.” The Last section contains a Study Guide of Follow Up Questions for each chapter in the book.Osborne’s model is simple; practical, proven, and effective. I don’t know of a better model for helping a local church reach out; equip; serve; raise up leaders; and unleash people for multiplying disciples of Jesus Christ. I have used this model in three churches; and now about to embark on launching this model in another church. I am grateful for it’s simplicity and yet the profound impact it has made practically in so many lives that I have been in community with. It has made a profound impact on my own belief that discipleship is done best in community and is a process not an event.

I love this book. I just wish it had more examples of sermon-based questions to stir up my creativity when preparing the sermon notes. In the book, he says this is such an important part of a successful sermon based group, but would love more examples. Currently, I go to their church's website to find their current homework to get ideas. We recently just launched our first small groups using this model and it will take a little time to get the culture to shift, which is ok. Overall I thought it made sense and love how everything is laid out in a very easy to follow format. Thanks for the book!

This is just solid wisdom and experience sharing the best from a great church. It’d be difficult to take this material and use it as a magic pill the way many how to ministry books lead us to. It helps give perspective and insight as well as a grid to see what might and what might not work in your context. You will find at least something that’s helpful.

So many churches have issues with members sticking with them. The back door needs to be closed. The ideas in this book offer practical help in how this can be done. It is an easy read. The lessons are drawn from the experiences of Osborne and his North Coast Church. I wonder how it works in a different setting, community and church culture. The preparation of the questions and resources for the small groups seems a daunting task. More help there would be a good revision for this book.

One of the BEST books on church. We have it wrong...the way we do church and Pastor Larry graciously shares how to make it work. Using Scripture and following the example of the 1st Century church, he shares what works and why. HIGHLY recommended. (Check our NorthCoast Church)

I just finished a book summary on Sticky Church by Larry Osborne. As the pastor of a mega-church in San Diego, one of the quickest growing regions in California, some of his assumptions may be driven by his fortuitous location. Most churches would be quite satisfied to experience the sort of explosive growth he had prior to the implementation of Sticky Church principals. The fact that it tripled or quadrupled in size over the next twenty years is partly due to his methodology and partly due to what was going on and his fortunate realization that the Cho empty chair model was not going to be successful in America the way it was in Korea or in other authoritarian type cultures. The Lecture/Lab model for sermon-based small groups is not revolutionary, but it's simplicity is. Because everything his ministry does is focused on the impact to the small group, the sticky factor is always the focus of his outcome based strategy. I bought this book to write the summary knowing that I had already been working this model in my own church with a tremendous effect. I am on year 3 of the lecture/lab model and it works, it's that simple. I would recommend this to anyone who is starting a small group or is ready to revamp their existing strategy. The reasons Osborne gives are sound and natural, with the exception of the assimilation theory he uses. I cannot get behind him on that. He really should write a different book on assimilation if he is going to reccommend it without supporting his conclusions. Great book though.

Good thought provoking things to consider for any church. Helping church leaders to consider how to close the backdoor and help those who come stick around is something that we all need to look at. It's easy to focus on the front door and I think that is what we have done and what a lot of church "programs" do. But our goal is to help people make it to Heaven, not just usher them in and move to the next people to usher in.This book was also an easy read. It's more about the experiences of the author and his church has gone through. So don't expect Scriptural studies on how Jesus ran his ministry. Aside from that, I think it is a good read and helps church leaders to evaluate small groups.

U.S. Presidents The Highest Office in the Land After winning the Revolutionary War, General George Washington probably could have had anything he wanted. Some of his army officers suggested he should be crowned king. If Washington had agreed to be king, and the crown had been passed down to his heirs, do you know who would be running America today? Paul Emery Washington, of San Antonio, Texas, retired regional manager of a building-supply company! Luckily, Washington didn’t want to be king, and instead, in 1789, he was elected and sworn in as the first president of the United States. For the last 225 years, instead of “His Majesty,” we’ve referred to our head of state as just plain “Mr. President.” (And maybe, someday soon, “Madam President.”) MAYBE THIS SHOULD BE THE HANSON MONUMENT IN HANSON, D.C. Strictly speaking, Washington wasn’t the first American president—he was the ninth! Before the Constitution was ratified, eight different men presided over the Continental Congress. If you count these guys, America’s real first president was a Maryland tobacco planter named John Hanson. But even though the United States is a democracy, the president still gets plenty of pomp and ceremony. In this chapter, we’ll take a look at some of the traditions and trappings that have grown up over the centuries around the highest office in the land. Big Bird The bald eagle on the official presidential seal holds both a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, to symbolize the president’s leadership in war and peace. Many people believe that the eagle is redrawn to face the arrows during times of war, but you should know better, Junior Geniuses. That’s just a myth. The seal has lots of hidden thirteens, to symbolize the thirteen original states of the union. If you watch the president on TV, you’ll see the seal printed everywhere he goes. The Mars candy company even puts the seal on special presidential boxes of M&M’s, available only at the White House and on Air Force One. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue George Washington never lived in the White House! It took ten years to build the city now named for him, so Washington governed from executive mansions in New York and Philadelphia instead. John Adams moved into the White House in November 1800 as its paint was still drying. Not a single room was completed, and the First Family used the large East Room, where ceremonies and receptions are held today, to hang their laundry. The day after moving in, Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail:“I Pray Heaven to Bestow the Best of Blessings on This House and All that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under this Roof!”Today these words appear above the fireplace in the White House State Dining Room. The Adams family even had to use an outhouse, as the White House had no indoor bathrooms or running water! But don’t worry about the president today having to run out to the Rose Garden in the middle of the night when he feels the call of nature. Since 1800, the mansion has been renovated many times with all the latest conveniences: Extra Credit Even before he got into hot water, Richard Nixon wasn’t much of a swimmer. In 1969, he ordered FDR’s pool covered up to expand the White House pressroom. His successor, Gerald Ford, promptly had a new outdoor pool dug in the South Lawn.Today the White House has 6 levels, 132 rooms, 28 fireplaces, 147 windows, 35 bathrooms, a bowling alley, and a movie theater. Even with all that space, things can get crowded. President James Buchanan used to invite over so many houseguests that he once wound up sleeping on the floor in a hallway! All that luxury isn’t free, however. Every president gets a monthly bill from the White House and is expected to pay all his family’s costs, everything from groceries to toiletries to dry cleaning. And the staff says that new presidents always complain about the cost! All About the Washingtons George Washington, one of the richest Americans of his time, thought that the president shouldn’t get paid at all, but instead just have his expenses reimbursed. Congress disagreed, and voted a $25,000 salary for the president. At the time, that was 2 percent of the national budget—the equivalent of $76 billion today! Today’s presidential salary: $400,000 a year. Not bad, for government work. The Earpiece Corps When you see Secret Service agents on TV talking into their sleeves (actually a small microphone on their wrists) what are they saying? Often they use code words, like “POTUS” (President of the United States) and “FLOTUS” (First Lady of the United States). All modern presidents have had their own individual code names as well. Here’s a top secret look behind the sunglasses. But the Secret Service was actually formed as a branch of the Department of the Treasury, mostly to fight counterfeiting. They didn’t take on their most famous duty—protecting the president and other VIPs—until after the McKinley assassination in 1901. Back then, security wasn’t such a big deal. Calvin Coolidge used to enjoy giving his security detail the slip and going for walks by himself out on F Street. But today, the president receives more than thirty death threats every day, so his protection has to be airtight. Every president back to Reagan has had an official food tester who tastes every dish served, to make sure it’s not poisoned. (If the food tester isn’t there, POTUS can’t eat lunch.) In 2007, Austrian newspapers even reported that during a state visit to Vienna, President Bush used a special toilet that collected his waste. The toilet was flown back to the U.S., making sure that no poop was left behind! The president often wears bulletproof protection under his suit, and his car is equipped with smoke grenades, tear gas, its own oxygen supply, a firefighting system, and a blood bank in the trunk equipped with the president’s blood type. Road Trip Nowadays, the president can’t just hop on his horse and ride to church alone, the way Lincoln did. When POTUS goes anywhere today, it’s a pretty big project. Here’s what his motorcade looks like. Many presidents grow to have close relationships with their security. • EISENHOWER, who loved to golf, got tired of squirrels tearing up the White House putting green, so he tasked his Secret Service with drawing up a countermeasure called Operation Squirrel Seduction. • RONALD REAGAN, in retirement and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, loved to spend his days skimming leaves off his pool. He didn’t know his agents were carefully replacing all the leaves, so he’d always have some to remove! • BEST OF ALL, GERALD FORD used to blame the Secret Service whenever he passed gas—which was often. “Did you do that?” he would ask loudly. “Show some class!” His agents must not have minded. One of them even wound up marrying his daughter, Susan! Prank of America All this security doesn’t always work perfectly. In 2007, an Icelandic high school student named Vifill Atlason phoned the White House pretending to be the president of Iceland, and managed to schedule a meeting with President Bush before his hoax was discovered! Frequent Flier In 1945, Franklin Roosevelt became the first commander in chief ever to travel in a special presidential airplane, when he flew to the Soviet Union to attend the Yalta Conference in a plane called the Sacred Cow. Today, any plane with the president on board gets a cooler call sign: Air Force One. There are currently two Boeing 747s in the president’s fleet. These are no ordinary passenger jets—they each have lots of special accommodations for the president, including a workout room, a five-chef galley that can serve two thousand meals, and a mini-hospital. The planes can also be refueled in midair, so the president can keep flying indefinitely in case of a national emergency. He’d never be out of touch with Washington, since each plane has state-of-the-art communication equipment, including 85 phones and 19 televisions. In total, its instruments use 238 miles of wiring. Air Force One is even specially shielded to withstand a nuclear strike! Pop Quiz! Near the end of his second term, James Madison burned out on Washington and spent four full months just chilling at his Virginia estate. What’s the modern name for the president’s private retreat, which was called Shangri-La until President Eisenhower renamed it in 1953 after his grandson? To-Do List Some presidential traditions happen every year. Here’s a helpful calendar, in case you’re ever elected. (Not for a few more years, though. The Constitution says the president has to be at least thirty-five.) The State of the Union Address The Constitution says that the president “shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union.” Thomas Jefferson hated public speaking (some historians think he might have had a stutter), so he used to just write Congress a letter. But ever since Woodrow Wilson, presidents have given their annual update as a speech to a joint session of Congress. Every year, the whole Cabinet attends the speech—except for one “designated survivor,” who is taken to a secret location. That way, if there’s some emergency, at least one person in line to succeed to the presidency is still safe.

Another great book in the Junior Genius series. Our 10-year-old loves all of Ken Jennings' books in this series. They are well written, engaging, and full of interesting facts.

Educational and entertaining! Just like Ken!

despite the fact that ken jennings is a seahawks fan, this is a great book

Our kids love these! Every Jennings' Junior Genius Guide we've purchased has been excellent.

The book is filled with interesting presidential trivia and my grandson (11) seems to be enjoying it.

My 10 year old has already read it through since the delivery guy dropped it off this afternoon. He giggled all the way through. It is full of funny facts about the Presidents and laws. Keep them coming Ken!

Grandson enjoys reading these

This book is filled with trivia stated in a way that keeps you coming back for more. Every turn of the page brings some facts that I had never heard before. I was sorry when I finished the book. Fortunately, for me, I have three more of Ken's books to keep me off the streets at night. This would be a good book for kids who would rather text than read. This book will hold the reader's interest.

#29,309 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

There is a sense of deja vu in all of Amish's writing - a sense that you have already read what has been written. I would not recommend this book to people who are looking for the pacy, fluid narration of a mythological story of one of the original super heroes of the world. It may be a good read for young children to whom one wants to introduce the world of Indian mythology in a manner of contemporary writing. But here too, Amish falls short of expectations because the connect between accepted notions of the events in Ram's life, and what is written - is absent. All in all - I would not miss not reading this book. A tragedy, because the earlier series had potential.

The book was a good read as such but Amish could have avoided modifying historical events only for the purpose of creating an impact. For instance, replacing the plot of Sita’s Swayamvara with Arjun’s feat of shooting the Fish’s eye in Mahabharata was totally not needed. Even if he had stuck to the original plot of Ram breaking the bow, it won’t have made the story any less interesting. On the contrary, it might have made it better. One of the best things about Amish’s Shiva trilogy was that he had explained otherwise complicated and mythological events quite rationally without modifying key events from ancient history. I found that brilliance missing in this book.

When you grow up in India, one will hear many versions of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Personally, I have read Kamba Ramayanam and detailed version by C.S. Rajagopalachari. Amish's version of Ramayan might come as shock to those who have not read the Shiva trilogy before. With strong characters, main concept of human beings elevated by their actions to a "Mahadev" or "Vishnu" (continued from Shiva Trilogy), and portraying women as warriors (including Sita, & Parvathi), it is quiet different from usual stories that I heard growing up. I personally like the interactions of Ram with his Guru Vashista and later with Guru Vishwamitra, where they debate different forms of governance, merits and pitfalls of each. Cannot help myself, comparing Democrats vs. Republicans, very apt descriptions for each. A must read for every Indian.

Amish is great in articulating the story, and this is no exception. I, however felt there was too much fixation few things such as Lakshman's body build, etc (don't want to disclose for future readers) , also I think the writer should have taken the liberty to deviate from the base story line to make it intriguing. Plots where it has been taken like that of Roshni's, it looks to be same as some 90's bollywood plot. Also discussions on dharma I thought could have either referred the upnishad directly or be in form of some story rather than discussion. Also the incidents where Ram actually achieved the glory and public love is covered in a page or two.All in all a good read, but certainly Amish can do much better.

As always, Amish has done a brilliant job in explaining the beautiful intricacies of the ancient world by logically explaining why Ram and Sita did what they did.Its an amazing journey for anyone reading with a calm mind without taking in any offense. Although at some times, it feels like Amish is trying to force the current world views to try and logically explain certain parts, they are definitely vindicated by the fact that he is only interpreting his version of ramayana. For all we know, Valmiki was only an author who interpreted his version of the true story to us.It is a piece of literary art and can be considered puttng up as our version of Ramayana instead of the old one.

The book was quite engaging , so much so that I was shocked when it ended. I kept waiting for that "something" to happen but it never did.As is his style, the author has his own version of how and why the events transpired, which in places was beautifully executed. However I also felt that in the process some important events like the actual swayamwar ceremony were undermined. While the bond between the brothers was built upon well but the same cannot be said for Ram-Sita.All in all, a mixed bag, but a good read !

All of his books are simply sensational. You just cant get over it even though you have completed it reading. This book had made me fall in love with the characters I considered fictional. Amazing writing Amish. May you books serve a purpose to the society to inculcate values from instead of diluted philosophical religious books that hardly made any sense. Like in my previous review on your books I am telling you again, I am definitely making the movies on these...

I have read Shiva Triology so I have to compare the two. In both, Amish has humanize Hindu Gods, and in doing so he has taken lots of liberty. Most hindus are aware that Satyug is followed by tretayug ( Ramayana era) and Dwapar ( Krishna Era), however we have been told that Dwarika is many millennium before Rama time while Prince bhagirath is chandravanshi many millennium after Ram( Bhagirath was suryavanshi and Rams ancestor). There are lots of mistakes like that. Moreover all non human characters like Jatayu to Ganesh and Hanuman are deformed humans ( Nagas). However these are interesting reads, though Shiva Triology is much better written than this. Here author has tried to emphasize on philosophy esp in the beginning which seems to inspire by modern day India( on rape juvenile laws etc.) its ok to read once, not as good as Triology.
