Luke is straight, except he kisses Ryan. Zach was straight, but now is bi, but still Luke's best friend. Luke outed Ryan, but has allowed Zach and Ryan to date since breaking up with Ryan who he was fake dating. Luke likes Lydia. Zack likes everyone, but will not talk about other gays in the area. The baseball team is confused. Some teachers are supportive. Some families are not because they do not know. More than a scholarship is at stake for Luke. Ryan is in love. Luke helps Ryan and his father tear down a barn that broke Ryan's leg.If this makes sense or you do not love teen angst, read something else. But this book and the sequel are the best examples of teen angst around, and I love these books better than I love Luke and Ryan. Holding hands takes on new meaning and Zack is a real best friend. If only they knew who was what and with who. Good thing it's a small town. This could get complicated.

A fun (and funny) look at growing up and finding love in high school, complete with all the overthinking, assumptions, misassumptions, drama, ridiculousness and general self induced anxieties that are simply part of growing up.Star athlete Luke finds himself in danger of being expelled for violating his school’s zero-tolerance policy and as his plans to get himself out of trouble steadily spiral out of his control the whole school finds itself caught up in all the conflicting gossip and drama. It finally falls to his friends and reluctant fake ‘boyfriend’ to get him out of it, in the process showing each of them their own truth. None of the absurdity and contrivance of the narrative arc or the characters feels out of place, quite the opposite. There is a sweet genuineness of it all that reminds me of the absurd drama of my high school years and the head shaking ‘truth is stranger than fiction’, ‘nobody would believe it if they hadn’t been there’ that accompanies my former classmates get togethers. What is particularly excellent is how tight the writing by the author fleshes out the cast of supporting characters and their own revelations.

I read it for free on Kindle Unlimited, but I liked it so much that I decided to purchase the book as well. When I first started reading Mr. Manning’s novel, I thought it would be a good story and quick read like his previous short stories but eventually after getting more into the book, I couldn’t put it down. I was excited to find out if Ryan and Luke will find a HEA ending. I liked how the author put a curveball into the story by having another male suitor come into the fold. This is an interesting dynamic of how your true feelings come to light after a lie. Wonderful work. Good funny quotes like: “It’s a make a wish type deal for underprivileged nerds,” said by Ryan on Chapter 3.Can’t wait to read the free extra chapter on the author’s website. This part has a very cute revelation.

Finn did a great job giving these kids funny conversations. When it was time to get real, I believed that too. This book appears to be two books joined as one. Part 2 could have been touched up so it wasn’t so repetitive for the first few chapters. I was invested in the story though and wanted to know how it would end. 3.5 for barns.

Love Ryan and Luke. The author did a great job capturing their awkwardness and emotions. It was pretty obvious how Luke felt to everyone but him, which is rather true to form. Boys are usually dumb to those kind of things no matter their age. Can’t wait for book 2 to see their relationship bloom.

There may be a few hiccups here and there, but the great writing and enjoyable story were more than enough to overlook them. The drama and confusion and mood swings of high school seemed very real to me. Adding a suitor for Ryan, and how it make Luke jealous, was fun.

A,ton if high school drama. Almost so much it gets old. The going back and forth about gave me whiplash. The story is okay and writing good but I really wished for more closure.

It seems as though there is a template for writing a gay high school romance story. It consists of one jock and one nerd, and that despite all odds, they find a love connection. The only variable that writers need to supply is how the boys get together. Usually, it’s the dumb jock getting tutored by the smart nerd to save his scholarship and then he falls in love with the nerd.In this tired cliche of gay YA fiction, Finn Manning takes a somewhat unique approach in this version. In One Little Word, the jock pretends to be gay in order to save his scholarship and then falls in love with the nerd. The continuing series is predictable. Here’s what I’m expecting: In the second book, the relationship solidifies but faces adversity from the jock’s teammates, parents and small-minded townsfolk. In the third book, the boys go to college together but jealousy threatens to destroy the relationship.Finn does give dimension to his main characters and makes the story a fun, easy read, but due to a lack of originality and the abundance of errors in spelling, and missing and misplaced words, I cannot justify rating this book any higher than three stars.Finn Manning is still on my radar and I hope to discover more originality and better editing in his books.
