Note, I've received a pre-publication copy of Steal The Show for review.I work in the Technology industry where presentations can be less than compelling. We tend to focus on the latest and greatest cool feature, though we don't relate why the tech is important or what was the grand idea behind it very well. We especially don't show why it's personal. I've presented at industry conferences before but never seemed to get the great feedback that I sought. I got a copy of Steal The Show to improve my presentations.I got more than I anticipated. Steal The Show is a book that demands your time to get the most out of it. If you follow the content and do the work, the results are going to amaze you. It will take time to digest this information as this isn't a read once and never pick up again kind of book. I find myself referring back to it over and over again.I first expected to read a book on making better speeches. Instead, my whole viewpoint and approach was changed. I must say that Michael has ruined me. After reading this book, I won't ever be able to sit through another mediocre presentation. I can now tell when the speaker threw the presentation together on the plane to the event. My expectations have been permanently raised for both other presenters and myself.Steal The Show provides a different thought process for developing and delivering your speeches than found in other speaking books. It goes beyond mere speaking techniques and into full blown performance planning and delivery. My biggest ah-ha moment was learning to approach it as a performance instead of a speech and that the performance starts much earlier than when you start speaking.I was asked to give a project management presentation on resource capacity. I had given it previously to lukewarm results. The presentation was dry and facts heavy. The audience usually sat through most of it but I always lost a lot of people toward the end.Using the techniques in the book, I reimagined and transformed it into a true performance on why we should be working less hours to be more productive. I made it personal, communicating how these changes had a direct impact on my family. Part of my issue was that the big idea was getting lost in the details. I restructured it from a curriculum speech to an idea speech. I organized the content using the problem/solution framework. The audience response was completely different. They were engaged. No one left early and people talked to me about it during the entire event.The Steal The Show process changed how I put my performance together. I had to put in the time developing the content, scripting it, reading it out loud and rehearsing it. The scripting process was new for me as I tended to outline the content and wing it from there. Reading it out loud was something that I had never done but it made a huge difference in the sound. When you are making your decisions about what to say in rehearsal instead of in real-time, your performance is easier to give.I also stopped agonizing over the slides using the STS process. Once I had done the appropriate rehearsal, I know the performance well enough to do it without slides, which I almost had to do. Thankfully, the point on doing a tech check saved me. We discovered the projector bulb had burned out and being the first presenter, I wouldn't have had slides.I am a much more effective public speaker today thanks to the Steal The Show techniques. I strongly encourage you to buy this book and give them a try.

Boy was that wrong.Instead, this book is refreshingly packed with detailed step by step instructions on exactly how anyone can become a better speaker in any setting. Right out of the gate, the author instructs readers on the oh so important concept of finding your individual voice and he illustrates how becoming a better speaker liberated one of his students from one of the most potentially scariest experiences in life. The book also teaches us performance principles and the author demonstrates (quite convincingly) how those principals can be used in a variety of professional settings and in everyday life.For this reader, perhaps most importantly this book also teaches you what not to do which I believe for many of us is the root of our fear of speaking in public. When we face crucial conversations, we can do one of three things: We can avoid them, We can face them and handle them poorly, or We can face them and handle them well. At the heart of almost all chronic problems in our organizations, our teams, and our relationships lie crucial conversations—ones that we’re either not holding or not holding well. Christians and church staffs are notorious for avoiding crucial conversations. This is why churches often split, people leave hurt and visions never move forward. Instead of doing the hard work in a conversation, they are avoided. When in reality, because of what is at stake (salvation) and because of the calling of Jesus, we should do a better job of having crucial conversations.2. Individuals who are the most influential—who can get things done and at the same time build on relationships—are those who master their crucial conversations. We all know this to be true. If you aren't very good at dialogue, you sit back in wonder at those who are. They are able to gain more influence, get more done and people want to be on their team and a part of what they are doing. This is why raising the value of this skill and getting better at it matters so much. Things move forward or stop around conversations.3. The mistake most of us make in our crucial conversations is we believe that we have to choose between telling the truth and keeping a friend. Grenny said this at the summit and it grabbed my attention. This is one of, if not the main reason, most conversations stop and things do not move forward. Fear. Fear of a relationship ending, something stopping, getting fired or hurting someone. Yet, if we don't tell the truth, we often can't be a friend.4. People rarely become defensive simply because of what you’re saying. They only become defensive when they no longer feel safe. The problem is not the content of your message, but the condition of the conversation. If you are a boss and want honest feedback and conversation, people can't fear for their jobs or that you will yell at them. Recently, there has been a lot of writing online about pastors abusing people, creating a culture of fear, yelling at staff members, elders and volunteers and it blows my mind. If you are known for that as a pastor, you should be embarrassed.5. Be careful not to apologize for your views. This can be easy to do and it often happens as a way to soften your opinion or the blow in a conversation, but you shouldn't apologize for what you think. It is what you think. It might be hard or unpopular to say, but don't shy away from it. You may be wise to change how you phrase it, but always be willing to share what you think in a conversation.6. One of the ironies of dialogue is that, when talking with those holding opposing opinions, the more convinced and forceful you act, the more resistant others become. I done this very easily in the past. Yet, this practice keeps people from buying in and helping to make something happen. When we do this, we don't understand why people aren't on board. The reason is the harder we push our way, the harder they push their way.7. Speaking in absolute and overstated terms does not increase your influence, it decreases it. The converse is also true—the more tentatively you speak, the more open people become to your opinions. The more harshly we speak or the more we give the impression that there is only one way, the less likely it becomes that people will speak up. Now, on issues like vision, it must be clear and have agreement. But, in conversations, if we give the impression that something has been decided or that we aren't open to suggestions, we will kill discussion.8. When we feel the need to push our ideas on others, it’s generally because we believe we’re right and everyone else is wrong. This is another way the previous one. If you find yourself pushing your ideas, you aren't having a good dialogue and instead are simply giving out orders. That may be your leadership style, but it won't accomplish a healthy team environment and in the end, your church or business will never reach its full potential.9. The more you care about an issue, the less likely you are to be on your best behavior. As a leader or a person in a relationship, you must learn this well. This was an eye opening insight for me. I get very passionate about things, as most people do, and when I do, I can shut down dialogue and end up hurting people. We do this, often unintentionally because we care about something, because we believe we are right and have the only way forward.10. The fuzzier the expectations, the higher the likelihood of disappointment. When a crucial conversation ends, there must be clear expectations and guidance moving forward. It cannot be fuzzy or gray. Otherwise, a conversation has not ended, it is simply on pause.All in all, this was an incredibly helpful book. Some of it covered things I already knew but showed some helpful insights. I've already seen a change in some of my conversations with leaders at my church and in my family through this book. Definitely one I'd recommend.

As a woman, I wish I would have read this book years ago. I would have been better prepared to ask for promotions and been a better listener as a mother. It's a book that you can re-read many times and still gain tips to help you through crucial conversations.

I ordered this book because it seemed useful and I could see one of my friends behaving differently. I bought this in mind that a big storm was coming. I have made mistakes during emotionally charged conversations/arguments before and didn't want to go down the same path again. Not too soon after I purchased it, that friend brought the storm.I took my time to read this and skim over it again before I entered the conversation because I didn't want to go in feeling attacked, defensive, or angry. I wanted to know how I could handle things. I didn't want to talk and head into a storm in the first place, but reading this book helped me feel less apprehensive about talking. I didn't want to go in ready to fight, I took my time talking on my own terms because I didn't want to lose my friend while feeling hot-headed. I explained my intentions on why I took long to not give off the impression that I didn't care.The book took me about 6 hours to read but I didn't really count. I flagged many pages to the point when I almost ran out of flags. There were very few parts I skipped towards the end (of examples/possible scenarios that I didn't think related to me), but most of the book seemed very relevant. The many examples helped. I think as a reader it helps to take written/typed notes of your own as you go, but I did not take much (I will though).When I felt I was ready to talk, I went in. I tried utilizing what I remembered. I did look at the smaller details to address them and tried not playing "trivia pursuit" on things that that were brought up. I got more of my friend's perspective. After we talked about our concerns, we found our misunderstandings and similarities regarding situations, as well as our viewpoints on both. I also brought up some possible agreements on how to avoid disrespecting each other in the future and if we did, the topic is left open so we can revisit our misunderstandings or perspectives again without making an ultimatum and to communicate more healthily if we think something is off between us. I didn't want to just get things off our chest, I wanted to make it easier for us to communicate in a similar manner (finding solutions) in the future. I wouldn't have gotten to this point if it weren't for this book. I honestly was prepared to lose a friend and in that scenario, none of us wins because we learned nothing about ourselves and others, we only saw our own viewpoints. By the end of our conversation, my friend seemed satisfied. We both have our similarities, though we handled things differently, this book played a part in bringing things up to light and how to go about it.There are other things I am going to work on tackling, such as things in the workplace and not in my personal life and hope it turns out okay for everyone too.I only read this once and skimmed it once after that, yet it helped me get this far. I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to get better at such conversations and arguments. It's worth rereading, not a read-once-and-drop-it kind of book.

Although marrying a prince and having wealthy, well-connected friends certainly made it easier for her to create a fashion business, no one's life is perfect. And DVF openly shares the ups and downs in her life in a refreshing, humble way. I adored this book and appreciate her showing us that everyone has challenges that can be overcome with perseverance and compassion.

I have painfully pushed through 40% of this book and can't go on any longer. This is not about the woman she wanted to be, this is about the woman and every single stifling love affair with countless men. I wanted to read about this amazing woman, her business, how she grew it, her ideas, her hardships and successes. The stories of her children and mother are wonderful, however, they jump around like a child's maze, left, right, around and back again. Time in this book jumps forward and backward. She explains in the beginning the book is organized based on how these things influenced her life. However, it comes out as a disorganized pile of clips of her life. Maybe it gets better as the book goes on, but I am moving on.

I bought the book after seeing an interview with Diane von Furstenberg while on a flight. She appeared much more intelligent and insightful than this book is. I appreciate the sentiment and the story, but this is not a well-written book. It tends to be repetitive in sections. I can be interested in Diane's romantic escapades for maybe a few pages at most, not two chapters! There is a bit of naivete that comes through, which would be ok for a young person, but not for an established business leader in the fashion industry. Having consulted someone before publishing the book would have been beneficial. There are a ton of "light reads", don't waste your time on this one.

Aside from loving her clothing line, I have enjoyed watching the reality TV show: House of DVF. Reading her book left me feeling inspired and uplifted because she doesn't sugarcoat her struggles and addresses simple but meaningful strategies to enhance one's life without changing who you are as a person--it's very authentic. Given where I am in my own personal life, I feel like I picked up this book at exactly the right time, which by pure coincidence also happened to be International Women's Day. The only regret I have from reading this book is that I was unable to attend a talk she gave when I was a student at Brown University.

Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) is a woman to admire. She credits her mother for her elegance and for training her to be independent. She credits her father for his unconditional love. Then there is that wrap dress she created, which a woman of any shape or size can wear confidently and stylishly. DVF tells the story of how she became the woman she wanted to be. She led a fabulous life, good schools and travel, mingling with the rich and famous and people of accomplishment in the arts. She talks about love and it's importance in an unabashed way. "I have tried not to lie my whole life", she writes, and I believe her. She was introduced into the Jet Set life, married a prince and danced and designed her way to the DVF empire which now has stores world wide. There were setbacks, both financial and health, but she is still standing and smiling. The book was a blast from the past for me, moving through six decades and inspiring all along the way. I ordered a wrap dress which I can't wait to receive and I look forward to what she does next!

The wrap dress continues to ignite the power in all women who desire to be elegant, delight in the comfort, and are inspired by art. I both adore and admire DVF, who has been an inspiration to women around the globe. She carries herself with sophistication, yet will genuinely reach to acknowledge commoners. I had the privilege of meeting this wonderful woman (Tour Guide) who provided time to be grateful for her surroundings and the people who assisted. Diane von Furstenberg was incredibly considerate and lives according to her words, "Love is Life." I would highly recommend reading The Woman I Wanted to Be to every woman who desires to become her best. As for the men, this book is an opportunity to understand the female gender.

Ever since I was, oh, maybe twelve, I've been in love with the wrap dress, made famous by my idol, Diane von Furstenberg. So when I bought her autobiography, I couldn't wait to hear her story. In fact, I chose her book as the first to grace my new Kindle. But in the end I had to admit that, as much as I adore her work with fabric, I didn't love the book nearly as much. It is indeed entertaining in a breezy sort of way, but I was hoping to see more of her soul--more angst. I'm still glad I read the book, however, and will continue to be a fan. As for her wrap dresses, I still gasp when I come across one on the racks.

In her authentic true self voice, DVF shares her incredible journey, highs and perhaps unsuspecting lows. She is living proof that age has no limits. She is the woman I want to be and tells her inspiring story in a way that made me feel we were talking over coffee or champagne. Reading on Kindle, I yearned for photos, and Google searched names, faces and places along the way. Then to my delight there were many more images at the end of the book. It was an interactive experience. I'm a little sad it's over. Even if a woman isn't that interested in DVFs incredible story, every woman should read the chapter on Beauty. It should be taught in Women's Studies education programs around the world. Diane Von Furstenberg is the voice of the 21st century on aging, shining the light on living life to its fullest. Shine on DVF, shine on!

Love this calendar, it’s cute, fun, and colorful. I have the coloring books and enjoy them so I had to get the calendar. Also a plus is that it is large enough to write appts, work days, and other important reminders.

In Watermelon Sugar is a place and a feeling that is so hard to describe, magical and creative!

There is trout fishing but that may not be the point

An excellent read. Little cryptic at time but quite spell binding..

Richard Brautigan was an absolute genius! What a wild ride. Loved it!

The book is interesting, however strange it may seem. Glimpses and thoughts ramble through the book, a few pages and simple stories create the sketch of what a normal book would include but that's why this works. It's the pieces not directly related but still connecting that can pull you along through the book.

I first read this novel back in high school and didn't really get it, but I liked the vibe. Reading it again in my thirties I got it better and enjoyed it even more. Anyone who lives in the Northwest and enjoys beat poetry with hippie undercurrents should take a big juicy bite out of In Watermelon Sugar--don't even bother spitting out the seeds, they're good too, and who knows what might grow in your tummy.
