So often in business, we focus on the tangible results of profits margins, quarterly growth trends and market share, all connecting back to the dollars and cents that make our organizations tick. No doubt, these are important and necessary to staying competitive and relevant. In Clients for Life, another powerful message comes through, another currency is considered, which is all about the importance of relationships and serving your clients. The authors do a great job of distinguishing between a transactional expert and the optimum role of the trusted, extraordinary advisor. Their insights helped me understand a higher role that could be taken in serving my clients. I recommend this book to anyone who has or wants to experience significance and value creation through serving clients.

A must read for any consultant, advisor or trusted confidant, who is working with clients in various areas of expertise (technical, business, political, organizational, etc). The co-authors (Sheth & Schoel) do a great job explaining the role of the advisor, and differences between the "hired hand" or "hired gun" and the trusted confidant and extraordinary advisor. This is a for book in your library!

this is an understated gem of a book. typically you find the core of a book lying within a few chapters but I felt this book was very balanced, each chapter contributing a different perspective to how to create clients for life.the authors illustrated each principle with a real example and its the lives of the great men / women that provides genuine inspiration to go further.as an advertising professional, I like the framework presented here very much, it provides a practical basis for creating solid, long-term client relationships, no fuss, the real meat.

I reread this book every year since I manage to learn something new from it each time. Not only will this book make you a better consultant, it will just make you wiser, period. The lessons and techniques in it should probably be abstracted from consulting somehow, is it could apply to far more relationships and self-development in life.

As a consultant, this book helped me focus on behaviors aimed at building a long-term practice rather than simply going from success-to-success. I say this not to toot my own horn (yes, I've had failures too) but rather because most decent consultants actually do OK--clients are generally happy. We appear to succeed on a regular basis. The great consultants, however, are the ones who build vocal followings...and that's where the value of this work rests.

Book required for work. Eh.

Who has time to read every business book we hear about? I had read what I thought was a thorough (20 page) review of this book and it reasonated with me big time. The book is even better. Pass if you only see clients as 'another transaction,' but if you are passionate your clients and the services you provide to them, this book is for you.

Great book. Highly recommended.

This book is not worthy in any educational setting. Chapters are not balanced, even in the context of a gradual build up. It is not accurate to the ArcMap program. The visual display of end-user steps to take aren't practical (light olive green was a weak choice), and I seriously have all of section 5-8 missing because pages from chapter 8 were printed in its place (see picture). Seriously, it goes from page 234 to page 363 in physical order. How pathetic is that?! The binding is poorly manufactured as well, made with a weak glue that will fall apart with light use. This has the feel of a book rushed off to printing at the last minute because the author and publisher didn't want to miss out on their profits for the latest version...as if textbooks aren't enough of a racket as it is. This book is a poor reflection on academia. If your instructor assigns these workbooks for their class, I would raise the issue ASAP.

I like that the tutorials walk you through step by step. However, there are quite a few steps that were not included that you have trouble shoot. Since this book really just shows you how to use certain functions, rather than actually teaching you how to use ArcGIS to build a map from scratch, it’s difficult to know what to trouble shoot and how to fix things when they go wrong.

It has been a great review for me. I am not very advanced with ArcGIS but nor am I a beginner either. Some of the material is a bit of a review but that is okay. I don't get to use GIS as a regular part of my job but I am looking for GIS (or just work where GIS is a benefit) so I will take the experience anywhere I can get it. Can't wait to get through it and start the third!

great book to get continue from No.1 Some steps are not fairly easy to understand, but can manage.

The tutorials are pretty much exactly the same, but better reinforced by the projects at the end of each chapter. Easy to follow, although they removed the file path-names so you must not remember where files are located.Additionally, sometimes when you are working on projects, the shape-files won't appear at all and you must find and re-add them to your project, Overall great book, I'd recommend.

I took a class on this software and used this book for the semester. I feel like I know the material very well know because of how this book is written. I like that it goes step by step, giving detailed explanations and pictures to guide you. Everything is very practical. Great essential tool if you are a beginner in learning GIS. I will be keeping the book to go back through and touch up on all the lessons.

Great tutorial book. I constantly go back to it to refresh on tasks I don't regularly do.

Voices From Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster, by Svetlana Alexievich

From Publishers Weekly

A chorus of fatalism, stoic bravery and black, black humor is sounded in this haunting oral history of the 1986 nuclear reactor catastrophe in what is now northeastern Ukraine. Russian journalist Alexievich records a wide array of voices: a woman who clings to her irradiated, dying husband though nurses warn her "that's not a person anymore, that's a nuclear reactor"; a hunter dispatched to evacuated villages to exterminate the household pets; soldiers sent in to clean up the mess, bitter at the callous, incompetent Soviet authorities who "flung us there, like sand on the reactor," but accepting their lot as a test of manhood; an idealistic nuclear engineer whose faith in communism is shattered. And there are the local peasants who take this latest in a long line of disasters in stride, filtering back to their homes to harvest their contaminated potatoes, shrugging that if they survived the Germans, they'll survive radiation. Alexievich shapes these testimonies into novelistic "monologues" that convey a vivid portrait of late-Communist malaise, in which bullying party bosses, paranoid propaganda and chaotic mobilizations are resisted with bleak sarcasm ("It wasn't milk, it was a radioactive byproduct"), mournful philosophizing ("[t]he mechanism of evil will work under conditions of apocalypse") and lots of vodka. The result is an indelible X-ray of the Russian soul. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* "Chernobyl is like the war of all wars. There's nowhere to hide." On April 26, 1986, the people of Belarus lost everything when a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station exploded. Many people died outright, and many were evacuated, forced to leave behind everything from pets to family photographs. Millions of acres remain contaminated, and thousands of people continue to be afflicted with diseases caused by radiation as 20 tons of nuclear fuel sit in a reactor shielded by a leaking sarcophagus known as the Cover. For three years, journalist Alexievich spoke with scores of survivors--the widow of a first responder, an on-the-scene cameraman, teachers, doctors, farmers, Party bureaucrats, a historian, scientists, evacuees, resettlers, grandmothers, mothers--and she now presents their shocking accounts of life in a poisoned world. And what quintessentially human stories these are, as each distinct voice expresses anger, fear, ignorance, stoicism, valor, compassion, and love. Alexievich put her own health at risk to gather these invaluable frontline testimonies, which she has transmuted into a haunting and essential work of literature that one can only hope documents a never-to-be-repeated catastrophe. -- I'll get down on my knees to beg you--please, find our Anna Sushko. She lived in our village. In Kozhushki. Her name is Anna Sushko. I'll tell you how she looked, and you'll type it up. She has a hump, and she was mute from birth. She lived by herself. She was sixty. During the time of the transfer they put her in an ambulance and drove her off somewhere. She never learned to read, so we never got any letters from her. The lonely and the sick were put in special places. They hid them. But no one knows where…. The whole village took care of her, like she was a little girl.Unlike most recent Nobel Prize winners, Svetlana Alexievich writes simply and directly, without any tricks of style, and the emotion she distills is heartbreaking. For these words are not her own, but those of survivors of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, faithfully transcribed by her down to the silences, tears, and hesitations, and lucidly translated by Keith Gessen. Start at the beginning, or open to any page, and you will find yourself drawn into these poor people's lives: townspeople who go out on their balconies to watch the unusual colors of the reactor fire, farmers forced to leave their crops and cattle, soldiers and firemen drafted in with inadequate protection to clean up the mess. It is very easy to read, and unbearably human. Or starkly human and eventually unbearable to read, because the stories of stolen lives are told in their raw form and never let up.The book is framed by two longish sections headed "A Solitary Human Voice," the accounts of widows, newlyweds and very much in love, seeing their husbands come back and basically rot before their eyes. It continues with monologues, dialogues, choruses, the voices of soldiers, resettlers, children, all meticulously attributed with their real names. There is tragedy, of course, and even more pathos. One returning soldier burns all his clothing except for his army cap which is coveted by his little boy; two years later, the child is dead of a brain tumor. One woman smuggles out her radioactive cat in a suitcase. Another goes to see her doctor:-- "Sweety," I say, "my legs don't move. The joints hurt." "You need to give up your cow, grandma. The milk's poisoned." "Oh, no," I say, "my legs hurt, my knees hurt, but I won't give up the cow. She feeds me."There is rumor and superstition here, but much genuine faith; ignorance and a strange kind of poetry. Bewilderment is only the other side of the coin to a previous belief in the stability of the simple life; sorrow is the obverse of love. The light of the disaster illuminates the lives of ordinary people; I could well believe that this is a better portrait of the Russian soul than any number of novels. There are even touches of characteristic black humor:-- There was a Ukrainian woman at the market selling big red apples. "Come get your apples! Chernobyl apples!" Someone told her not to advertise that, no one will buy them. "Don't worry," she says. "They buy them anyway. Some need them for their mother-in-law, some for their boss."One man tried to write about his experiences. "I sent the story to a journal. They wrote back saying that this wasn't a work of literature, but the description of a nightmare." Which makes me ask the question of Alexievich herself: a nighmare certainly, but is this literature as we know it? It felt more like the raw materials waiting to be made into literature by someone else. Being a theatrical person myself, I kept on wondering how I might select from those monologues and choruses to put them on the stage, set them to music perhaps, at any rate do something to give them shape and overall meaning. The author divides her book into three major sections: The Land of the Dead, The Land of the Living, and Amazed by Sadness. But the texture of the narratives is much the same in each; there is no obvious structural arc, no particular reason why you should continue to subject yourself to such a succession of tales of woe. But perhaps I would be wrong to try to force these stories into a shape that has some meaning. They HAVE no meaning, no larger redemptive purpose. And that is her point.Keith Gessen, the translator, opens with an introduction giving some of the facts and dates of the disaster. But with the exception of a brief preface, Alexievich herself does not. In her equally brief closing section, In Place of an Epilogue, she explains why, and also why she feels the subject is so urgent: because living in a country with 350 atomic bombs, the threat of nuclear holocaust is all too real. Let me end my review, therefore, with her own voice after reading so many others:-- I often thought that the simple fact, the mechanical fact, is no closer to the truth than a vague feeling, rumor, vision. Why repeat the facts--they cover up our feelings. The development of these feelings, the spilling of these feelings past the facts, is what fascinated me. I try to find them, collect them, protect them. These people had already seen what for everyone else is still unknown. I felt like I was recording the future.

Alexievich was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature. I was compelled to read one of her texts. I settled on the Voices of Chernobyl. This book is a collection of Chernobyl survivors's interviews. This ongoing tragedy is momentous. The first story is almost too painful to read because we empathize with this young and naive wife who slowly watches her husband die over 14 days, and the last story is also about a young wife who watched her husband slowly die over years. All members of society have voices in this collection. While I was reading this book, I thought and wondered about the survivors, and I knew that most, or probably all, are dead. The ramifications of this accident will last for decades, centuries, and probably millennia. This book is not for the faint of heart.

To most Americans, the nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl in 1986 is a remote news item. This collection of first person accounts elegantly assembled by Svetlana Alexievich introduces the reader not only to those who lived in the nearby village, but other victims from soldiers, "liquidators", up until the recreation of Chernobyl as a refugee resettlement for former Soviet citizens who've been ousted from former member states. This is a difficult book. The reader can barely believe the inhumanity, cruelty, and outcomes of being exposed to radiation. Nor is the obedience to leadership, the self-sacrifice, and love of land easy to grasp. In these times of uncertainty, the question of political power, intent, and puppetry are asked over and over again by the storytellers.

I found this book to be one of those that is hard to put down, and at the end you want more pages to read. Finished in hours, one sitting. The subject matter is dark but if you have a morbid fascination then this is for you. The first hand accounts really bring this real-life tragedy to life and are quite sobering. Not a feel-good book, but it is a historical account that shouldn't be passed on so that those who haven't experienced it can gain some insight into this and other like situations. Excellent read! It gives the reader much to think about and digest. You will end up with questions that you wouldn't have even known to ask before reading this.

Short version: This book cannot possibly have earned 4.8 stars on its own merit; while the reviews did look a little bit like empty praise, I wasn't expecting the book to be this bad. Don't waste your money, or your time.Long version: There are several major problems with this book.1) The usage and style is dreadful. Here's a short passage from Chapter 3:"After the starting letter, identifiers can contain as much numbers, underlines, and letters. Just make sure that underlines only occur once in the identifier. Also, underlines must ever be the last character in the identifier....Letter cases are not very important....However, it is imperative for an identifier to fill one text line."There are a few places where I can't even tell what the author means, and besides, I find it very difficult to trust a book that is written so poorly and unprofessionally.2) Though this is supposed to be a "beginner's guide," in several places technical jargon and Ada terminology is used without introduction. While I understand that this is probably not intended to be a book for learning your first programming language, I am a computer science student and have fairly extensive background in programming, and I have trouble understanding some of these paragraphs (not helped by point 1).Things such as imports or the function Put_Line() (for displaying output on the terminal) are used in code examples without explanation. The text surrounding the code examples tells me less than the code itself, even without much familiarity with Ada's syntax. In other places, pages are taken up on boilerplate: an entire chapter is devoted to explaining the use of the boolean comparison operators (equal to, not equal to, less than, greater than, less than or equal to, greater than or equal to).3) The book fails to explain the motivation behind many things; for instance, underscores can be written in numbers and will be ignored by the compiler. The purpose of this is to allow you to write thousands separators in the source code, but it doesn't explain this and leaves you to wonder why you might want to put extra characters in your code without any reason, and why the compiler would specifically be written to allow it.4) There are no exercises whatsoever, nor does it even explain how one compiles an Ada program, which might be fine for a reference work but hardly for a book that is supposed to introduce you to the language.

I used to be horrible at programming with ADA, but now I can code pretty good. I loved the way Sam Key explains how ADA works and everything possible with ADA. Thanks Sam, couldn't have learned ADA without you!

A complete waste of time and money. This guy (Sam Key) wrote a similar book on Prolog and it is also worthless. You can learn more about ADA programming at wikipedia and adahome.com in ten minutes.

Not worth the time required to read it

This ADA guide is written very efficiently and was a breeze for me to get the information I needed out of. I was having a minor technical problem and was able to solve it after skimming through this book for the last two hours. It can be hard to find a well written programming book but this was just what I needed.

complete waste of time.

when I received the book I quickly looked inside and realized I may have made a mistake: this book looks like it was printed in someone's basement with a 15 years old bubble jet printer ...Then I started reading it.I'm not a native English speaker but I've read tenth of programming books in English and this one seems to come out of an automatic translation application being fed with random quotes from a forum mentioning ADA. The style is horrible, with plenty of typos (it says ADA has function bonding ...), and general blabbing that's either irrelevant or unrelated to ADA. Some parts just don't make sense at all.I stopped reading it at page 14 where it says that Hello_guys_10 is an illegal identifier name because it contains multiple underlines.I know very little about ADA, and this is why I bought the book, to learn the language, but I know for sure identifiers can have multiple underlines.I will not read it any further, because I don't trust what's written in it, and it completely defeats the purpose of a book targeted at beginners.I'm wondering how this book can have so many positive reviews. I should have paid more attention to the negative ones. Maybe you should too.

Professional programmer working in Ada for the first time (old government project - yay), went looking for details on something basic (String) and found essentially nothing useful.Avoid this book unless you're not paying for it.

The book is underwhelming in print format. Mediterranean diet information is basic and easily found elsewhere for free. Recipes are filled with grammar errors. There may even be errors in recipe instructions, but I will be returning this book without actually completing a recipe. The author lacks credibility and expertise of the Mediterranean diet and setting up a diet plan. Most recipes and the suggested diet plans are filled with sugars and animal fat products - all of the things the author says Mediterranean people eat infrequently. Photos of recipes are black and white and suggested serving sizes on some border ridiculous - 3 oz. of tuna split among four people? We each get a bite! Poorly researched information, basic recipes, far too many errors across the board - rudimentary at best whether in print format or digital.

Being popular for now the Mediterranean Diet can be very helpful to our body system, providing it with healthy meal and delicious taste at the same time.many people try to find some easy to follow diet and to get very good result with it.This cookbook has various recipes, with many ingredients that I really love to eat. So hope that the result with weight loose will be perfect too.

Excellent book. This book really interested. The Mediterranean Diet for Beginners is a "heart -healthy diet" proven to lower cholesterol and heart disease. It is considered to be one of the most nutritious menus. This is not actually a diet but a culinary tradition that focuses on fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, seafood, whole grains, and olive oil along with a glass of red wine once in a while. Highly recommend!

This book is for everyone trying to eat healthier and lose the unwanted pounds...and the recipes are delicious!!! I can follow this plan without feeling the dreaded DIET!!!

I was recommended this book from a friend of mine. Personally, my wife and I really enjoy reading this book. All of the Mediterranean Diet recipes, tips and guides that I need to know about how to prepare healthy food for my family and stay healthy are already included and well illustrated inside. Jolene Daisy is a master chef on this topic. What I love the most from the book is all recipes. They are very delicious, quick to prepare and well guided.

All the dishes are made with the freshest ingredients, and I love the captivating and vibrant food photography . Every recipe has a cultural tip on the Mediterranean tradition. This book is well-written by the distinguished chef, and award-winning author, Jolene Daisy! I recently made her Citrus-Marinated Scallops, and they came out delightful. If you are a health "nut", I recommend this book.

The book is enlightening and instructive, and it incorporates an example 7-day dinner plan just as a few formulas. I think that its simple to pursue, the formulas are clear and simple, and taste great. We got it alongside the Mediterranean Sow Cooker Cookbook (my significant other love soups and stews) and locate the two give all we have to begin. Great book.

Immaculate to begin. Overlook every single negative audit. It is a vital book to comprehend the essential things of the Mediterranean eating regimen and the formulas are copious to fill in for instance of how the Mediterranean eating routine will look in your life from everyday on the off chance that you wish to shed pounds the correct way.

Amazon.com Review

Nikolai Chernyshevsky's great novel, originally published in 1863, transformed Russian views of the peasantry in much the same way that Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin changed American perceptions of slavery. In its pages, a group of idealistic Russian intellectuals go back to the land, easing the lot of the peasants with scientific methods of farming and liberating the serfs from hardship. The intellectuals' socialist vision offers the promise of a world that subsequent events did not bear out, and it is fascinating to consider in the light of historical reality. Fyodor Dostoyevsky gave Chernyshevsky's tale, full of sermonizing and idealism, a darkly pessimistic twist in his masterpiece The Possessed.

Review

"No work in modern literature, with the possible exception of Uncle Tom's Cabin, can compete with What Is to Be Done? in its effect on human lives and its power to make history. For Chernyshevsky's novel, far more than Marx's Capital, supplied the emotional dynamic that eventually went to make the Russian Revolution." (The Southern Review)"In the Russian revolutionary movement, no literary work can compare in importance with Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?.... Katz and Wagner have provided us with a version that is worthy of the novel's importance. Katz's translation is faithful to the original, yet cast in words that bring Chernyshevsky's meaning alive to modern readers.... Wagner, in turn, provides abundant notes, explaining obscure references, making connections between parts of the novel that could easily be missed on first reading, and alerting the reader to those many passages where Chernyshevksy hinted at what he could not say outright." I’ve always thought that stories carry much more power in the minds of men than cardboard tomes full of equations. “What Is To Be Done,” juxtaposed against “The Communist Manifesto”; “Atlas Shrugged” against “Wealth of Nations”. It is said that “What Is To Be Done” is the book that radicalized Vladimir Lenin. Let that sink in for a moment; a simple (if long) novel about a young girl who wants find peace and a measure of prosperity and independence in Tsarist Russia is responsible for the extermination of 100,000,000 souls. And there are people who deride fiction (insert scoffing sound here)…Occupied as my mind has been for many years with the struggle between liberty and collectivisim, what struck me was of course the contrast between “What Is To Be Done” by Nikolai Chernyshevsky and “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. Because if Chernyshevsky is the author of the story of modern totalitarianism, Rand is the dramatist of modern Liberalism’s heroic saga. As literature, “What Is To Be Done” is extraordinarily well written. Having struggled for a long time through Solzhenitsyn and Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, I was impressed by how naturally Chernyshevsky’s writing flowed – how easily the plot developed and held together and how he weaved in ideas of revolution and socialism. I can only imagine how eloquent it must read in its native Russian, especially 150 years ago when a young and impressionable Lenin found it. “Atlas Shrugged” is also extremely well written – Rand’s mastery of emotions and momentum in her epic tale of destruction and rebirth is also brilliant and I cannot help but think that it too, in Russian (Rand, though Russian by birth, actually wrote in English – making her feat that much more impressive) would be electrifying. Of course Chernyshevsky wrote in 18th century floury Russian prose that was Tsarist Russia’s response to England’s Victorianism, full of sentimentality and the inner lives of the characters; whereas Rand wrote a century later and her work has a binary and perhaps two-dimensional feel to it, perhaps as a response to soviet ‘Socialist Realism’ (something I’m going to explore further, stay tuned). Rand’s belief that “Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value-judgments.” Compared to the idea that by depicting “the perfect person” (New Soviet man), art could educate citizens on how to be the perfect Soviets – as Anatoly Lunacharsky, perhaps the father of ‘socialist realism’, believed.Naturally, the difference between the two portrayals of communism’s nightmare could not be more striking.“We entered the workrooms; the girls who were occupied there seemed to be dressed like daughters, sisters, or young wives of these same officials. Some wore dresses made of the plainest silk, others wore barege or muslin. Their faces reflected the gentleness and tenderness that can come only from a life of contentment. You can imagine how all this surprised me. (…) I’d been told that I’d see a workshop where seamstresses live and I would be shown their rooms; also that I would meet seamstresses and would share their dinner. Instead I visited apartments of people who were reasonably well off, united in one establishment. (…) I shared their dinner which, while not lavish, certainly satisfied me. What was all this about? How could it be possible? (…) Instead of poverty I saw contentment; instead of filth, not merely cleanliness, but even some luxury in their rooms; instead of crudeness, considerable education.” Nikolai Chernyshevsky, What Is To Be Done.Paired against:“…the first house in sight (…) showed a feeble signal of rising smoke. The door was open. An old woman came shuffling out at the sound of the motor. She was bent and swollen, barefooted, dressed in a garment of flour sacking. She looked at the car without astonishment, without curiosity; it was the blank stare of a being who had lost the capacity to feel anything but exhaustion. (…) There was a useless gas stove, its oven stuffed with rags, serving as a chest of drawers. There was a stove built of stones in a corner, with a few logs burning under an old kettle, and long streaks of soot rising up the wall. A white object lay propped against the legs of a table: it was a porcelain washbowl, torn from the wall of some bathroom, filled with wilted cabbages. A tallow candle stood in a bottle on the table. There was no paint left on the floor; its boards were scrubbed to a soggy gray that looked like the visual expression of the pain in the bones of the person who had bent and scrubbed and lost the battle against the grime now soaked into the grain of the boards. A brood of ragged children had gathered at the door behind the woman, silently, one by one. They stared at the car, not with the bright curiosity of children, but with the tension of savages ready to vanish at the first sign of danger.” Ayn Rand, Atlas ShruggedFriends with whom I discuss these things (there are not many) often accuse me of being ‘too Austrian’ in my approach to economics and market interference, especially by governments. I am after all in favor of that elusive 28th Amendment ‘Congress shall make no law respecting the free trade of ideas and goods or regulating the free operation of the market’. They see ‘Austrianism’ as a fantasy, and humanity as fundamentally in need of supervision (of course those who believe such things usually believe that it is they who should do the supervising, but I digress). “Just like communism,” they say, “too much liberalism will make people vulnerable, and they will be taken advantage of (because the North Koreans never do that…); and might lead to economic Darwinism (as if that was a bad thing, cue ‘creative destruction’) which will be hard for those who cannot compete (always thinking about the people who sell the inferior product, not those forced to buy it). We just need balance.” ‘Hadn’t we heard it all our lives – from our parents and our schoolteachers and our ministers, and in every newspaper we ever read and every movie and every public speech? Hadn’t we always been told that this was righteous and just?’ as Rand says. My response is to try and point them to the end results of even the most well-intentioned plans. “But how did that work out?” I ask, a large glossy picture of the Gulag framed on my desk. North Korea’s death camps where people are tortured unto the third generation. Bonfires of human flesh beside a bread line in Venezuela. Cuba’s ‘Special Period’ where starved inhabitants of that imprisoned island contracted rickets and went blind. “The road to hell is paved by good intentions,” ya, I think I heard that somewhere. And communism is certainly hell. “Now consider Argentina in the 20s,” I say, though most don’t listen, “the United States even today though we are losing our ‘invisible hand’; Friedrich Hayek’s England. The luxury of Adam Smith’s world. The closer you get to socialism, the more miserable; the closer you get to ‘spontaneous order’, the better off.” Or maybe I just shrug and channel Ayn Rand again, “In any compromise between food and poison, it is only death that can win. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit. In that transfusion of blood which drains the good to feed the evil, the compromise is the transmitting rubber tube.”Its an important lesson, which is why I read Chernyshevsky, and Rand – after all someone has to. Humanity appears to need to re-learn our lessons one generation after another in an endless closed loop, which is why books are so important. Because unless we keep pointing out that “They work for themselves; they’re the real owners (…)” invariably becomes, “What is it that hell is supposed to be? Evil – plain, naked, smirking evil, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we saw and helped to make – and I think we’re damned, every one of us, and maybe we’ll never be forgiven…”, it will all happen again, as it has so many times before.

Nikolai Chernyshevsky's 1863 novel What is to be Done? was one of the most famous and influential books in nineteenth century Russia. Three of Dostoevsky's masterpieces – Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment and The Devils – were, in large part, extended responses to Chernyshevsky's ideas. At the other end of the political spectrum Lenin read the book several times and paid homage to it by borrowing its title for one of his own political tracts. So why isn't such an important work in one of the world's great literary cultures better known in the English-speaking world? The simple answer is that What is to be Done? is a very bad novel. The prose style is flat and didactic without any of the literary flourishes which the author believed merely distracted from the main purpose of art: to propagate progressive political, social and moral ideas. The main characters do little else but calmly and politely lecture their inferiors and each other at great length about the way society and private lives ought to be organised. There are exhaustive descriptions of the organisational details of a co-operative dress-making factory, longs discussions of issues such as whether progressive married couples should knock before entering each other's private bedroom and extended dream sequences where the future agrarian utopia is revealed, replete with electric lighting and aluminium furniture and kitchenware. The narrator frequently interrupts the lofty, improving discourses of the leading characters in order to explain things directly to the reader, just in case he has missed the significance of the scenes that have just been presented. But for all the author's calm rationalism and humanitarian ideals the novel has its sinister side. The characters who represent the enlightened minority spend most of their time trying to improve the "mean, base, pitiful" majority but their attitude towards them is ambiguous at best. As the progressive Lopukhov says to the very unenlightened Marya Aleksevna: "I'd be glad to wipe you off the face of the earth, but I respect you." One can imagine Vladimir Ilyich Lenin nodding his approval as he underlined this passage. There is a cast of thousands, but the only interesting one is the fanatical Rakhmetov who is so devoted to the cause that he attempts to eliminate every daily activity that will not be useful in furthering the revolution. He engages in gymnastics and strenuous physical labour because he observes that the common people respect a strong physique and even sleeps on a bed of nails in order to teach himself to withstand pain. Unfortunately for the reader, however, he only appears in about thirty of the novel's four hundred pages. That leaves about 370 pages given over to the worthy deeds and improving discourses of the less colourful characters and the preaching of the omniscient narrator. As one of the characters reflects:"No matter how fixed the ideas of a man in the wrong, if another man, more developed, more knowledgeable, and more understanding constantly works to lead him into the light, his errors can't hold out for long."Chernyshevsky obviously thought that four hundred pages of leading his less developed readers into the light would just about do. Personally, I was prepared to invoke the mercy rule after about fifty. The excellent introductory essay by Michael Katz and William Wagner tells you everything you need to know about Chernyshevsky and his novel. I'm sure Rakhmetov would agree that it would be a waste of valuable time to read any further.

Chernyshevsky writes in an interesting, readable, style. He develops his characters very well and effectively weaves in the issues of the time it was written. In my opinion he is one of the great classic Russian writers.

Stay with it. It goes on and on, but many interesting things along the way.

Between the wit of the opening scenes, the most amazing preface ever written, and the depth and beauty of the characters Vera Pavlovna and Julie le Tellier, this is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. I cannot understand the negative reviews at all. I can only assume the reviewers do not understand or have patience for the fact this is a translation. Despite its being a translation, the work's genius shines through. My biggest regret is that when I finish reading it, there will be no more left to read, but I will find and read his 1877 novel *Prologue*.

A challenge to read.

An interesting novel, so it's the author's imagination. The book is claimed to have been quite popular when it became available, a part of which probably was that there wasn't much else available. The author envisioned the ideal communal society through Co-Operative Living, which included sharing in the work of the economic enterprise and the purchasing power of buying in bulk for the Co-op. However, as time has proven, such organizations have not been successful, as Robert Owen and others have demonstrated with failed attempts. Even the people who believe enough in such approaches to join them, seem to be looking for all they can get, while expecting the others to do the work.
