I've been reading Ursula Le Guin's works since 1970. Forty-five years later, I decided to go back and reread "The EarthSea Trilogy," only to find their are six EarthSea books and many others I have not read. I went to Amazon in search of a specific translation of the Tao Teh Ching, required for a class I am taking, and found a translation by Ursula Le Guin. I ordered all the EarthSea books AND her Tao translation, as well as my required reading. I was stunned to find that EarthSear is filled with Tao, that much of way I've chosen to live my life has been guided by the very philosophy that forms the foundation of much of her fantasy. Le Guin's commentaries at the end of the EarthSea novels, tells how she slipped characters of color into the book when we were passing constitutional amendments to allow AA to vote; strong women during an era we could not pass the Equal Rights Amendment, all so subtle and done with such craftsmanship, the reader enjoys the fantasy and misses the politics.Lightyears ahead of her times, she weaves a grand story of fantasy into a work that is relevant for all time. I highly recommend this book and all others I've read to date by this amazing author.

I read and loved The Earthsea Trilogy when I was in my early twenties. I read it to my daughter when I was in my early thirties. I'm reading it to my grandchildren now. The ability of skilled storytelling to teach us about ourselves is seldom more powerful than when we find it in what the "literary world" looks down upon as "fantasy." But J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Elizabeth Moon, and Ursula Le Guin have learned from the best. They stand on the shoulders of every indigenous oral tradition around the world which has always taught young humans who they were with stories of animals and/or mythical beings not so much different than themselves. This series (now wonderfully expanded) is the perfect gift for young people of all ages. At 63, I am still swept away, joyously caught up in every page of Le Guin's magical way with words. She is a Master storyteller, and her enlightening lessons last because her readers cannot help passing them on.

But I suppose Le Guin wrote this right when the world really needed it. The Farthest Shore brings us to our protagonist's most difficult, yet clairvoyant journey. The book is written from the perspective of Arren, a young and impatient prince who comes to Sparrowhawk with troubling news. The world is changing -- people are becoming petty and bitter. The dragons are beginning to die. The shadows are drawing in on Ea and no one seems to know or care why.This book is powerful because it was originally published as a young adult novel but it has very grown-up themes and concepts. As a younger reader it might be easier to relate to passionate Arren, but the wisdom represented by Ged (who is now in his middle ages), is not lost in Le Guin's writing. And, obviously, those readers who have followed Ged through The Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs of Atuan have a deeper understanding of the decisions he makes in The Farthest Shore.In any case -- don't let "young adult" put you off from reading this book. If anything the short length makes this a wonderful weekend read, and really sparked that imagination in me that I thought was lost with maturity.

The Wizard of Earthsea series is heavily influenced by nonwestern philosophy, so I wasn't expecting to see an existentialist novel by Le Guin. I enjoyed it.The antagonist in this novel is the unwillingness of people to accept death. This also causes them to lose their passions in life: "To refuse death is to refuse life... You will die. You will not live forever. Nor will any man nor anything. Nothing is immortal. But only to us is it given to know that we must die. And that is a great gift: the gift of selfhood. For we have only what we know we must lose, what we are willing to lose... Would you give up the craft of your hands, and the passion of your heart, and the light of sunrise and sunset, to buy safety for yourself -- safety forever?"When the archmage is asked why he is unaffected by the malaise going over the world, he responds that wants to do what he is doing: "Because I desire nothing beyond my art... And if I am soon to lose it, I shall make the best of it while it lasts." In the book, his art represents all of the meaningful crafts and endeavors that people engage in and that make people happy. Desiring nothing beyond his art evokes Camus' "Myth of Sisyphus" for me -- that even though Sisyphus is only pushing a rock up a hill, we should still imagine Sisyphus happy. And making the best of his art while it lasts is a tight fitting analogy for making the most of a life that will end too soon.He also accepts death: "Did you not understand that he, even he, is but a shadow and a name? His death did not diminish life"

In those articles, I occasionally attempted to discern his motives, d to speculate on his lack of technical understanding of the technology he was supposed to be enabling by keeping it acceptably safe, and to wonder about the sources of his apparent political power.After reading his well-written, honest account, I no longer have to speculate. As he clearly explained, he knew NOTHING about nuclear power generation when he arrived in Washington with an esoteric physics degree. After producing a philosophical, theoretical theory on the behavior of baryons and mesons, he decided that he really didn't want a career in science. But full of personal ambition, he thought he might try landing a job in Washington.He landed an AAAS fellowship, which meant that he would be free labor for a congressional office for 18 months. Congressman Ed Markey picked him from the roster of available fellows. During his 18 months in Markey's office, Jaczko learned strategies and tactics that were effective in Washington with an emphasis on Markey's special interest in "nuclear power plant safety" – which Mah-key has often used as code for "sabotaging nuclear plant economics whenever possible."After finishing his fellowship, he was hired by Senator Harry Reid. In Jaczko's own words, the reason Reid hired him was that he was looking for "a scientist staffer to help him fight another nuclear power battle." That battle was killing the Yucca Mountain long term nuclear waste storage repository, an action Reid had been promising his Nevada constituents for decades.Jaczko reveals the sordid story of how Reid took advantage of [abused] Senate traditions to force his chosen staffer onto the Nuclear Regulatory Commission despite bipartisan opposition and strong resistance from people who favor the use of nuclear energy as a major weapon in the battle against climate change and energy vulnerability (the opposite of energy dominance.)Jaczko also provides a fascinating account of a White House meeting with Rahm Emanuel who told him in rather profane language that he was being given an important job regulating a technology that played a vital role in addressing climate change, one of President Obama's two highest priority issues. Rahm told him not to make trouble and not to eff it up. Jaczko left the office resolved to do his own thing and to "clean up" the NRC.Anyway, I highly recommend Jaczko's "Confessions" for people interested in nuclear energy as a powerful tool for providing abundant, clean energy and wondering why the industry seems to be struggling so hard to compete with inferior power sources.Jaczko has laid it all out and appropriately given himself a large slice of the credit for driving nuclear costs higher just when they needed to start falling. He brags about his role in slowing approvals for the new plants at Vogtle and Summer while acting surprised that they fell behind schedules created before his meddling occurred. He claims that the Fukushima accident, which did not harm anyone by exposure to radiation, proves that nuclear energy is not safe enough to be used anywhere.That claim is completely devoid of understanding society's need for abundant, emission free energy and its acceptance of the fact that no technology is or needs to be perfect in order to be effectively used to help us thrive.Jaczko's book highlights one of the major improvements in nuclear regulation that must be made. No single person should ever be granted such unilateral ability to sabotage such an important and useful technology. Jaczko acted in complete obedience to his congressional mentors, Markey and Reid, even when he was clearly informed that his actions were contrary to the President's agenda.Read it. Learn from it. Help make the world a better place.

Unfortunately, the NRC has had a few anti-nuclear members over the years, since the commissioners are political appointments. Jaczko was always anti-nuclear. It's not some kind of sudden revelation as it is presented. While he was at the NRC as commissioner, and then chair, he was surrounded by knowledgeable people who would immediately shoot down anything counterfactual, so he was constrained in how he expressed that. It seems likely that this was at the root of his abusive and unsafe (in NRC terms) management style - he could not easily tolerate dissent, which is an essential part of safety culture.

TL;DR: Politial appointee tries to re-cast his partisan actions as a public safety campaign.Here, Greg Jaczko has made a noble effort to regain the narrative on his failed political career by publishing what is essentially his Beltway memoirs under the guise of being a policy book.To be clear, Jaczko long ago gave up any pretense at being a scientist and was arguably never a regulator, in that he didn't care to regulate the industry for the public good so much as his goal was shutting it down. He was a groomed political appointee, selected and advanced by anti-nuclear voices in Congress. Blink and you'll miss it in this book though, as Jaczko paints himself as a wide-eyed innocent just stumbling into a series of highly placed political jobs. He literally compares his story to the 1939 film, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".Reading this book requires you are fully committed to the idea of shutting down all nuclear work in the United States of America. Otherwise, the shifting arguments and appeals just become too tortured. For instance:1. New computer codes are developed to model fires in nuclear plants. Applying these changes to 50+ uniquely designed and built commercial plants in the USA would require considerable analysis and re-fitting costs. Jaczko doesn't want to hear any of this and wants these changes implemented immediately. The computer codes must be trusted!2. New computer codes are developed to model environmental conditions in Yucca Mtn, the (formerly) designated final repository for unusable spent commercial nuclear fuel. These demonstrate that the project can move forward in the state that Jaczko's political patron represents. Jaczko works to shutdown the project immediately. The computer codes cannot be trusted!Similar lines of reasoning drift in and out throughout the rest of the book. Essentially, if Jaczko thinks the results will cost the commercial industry money, then he paints the results as common sense and safety driven. If he thinks the results will hurt his political patrons or help the industry, then the results are flawed and he sets some arbitrary standard of perfection to avoid implementation while they are refined, ad infinitum.Stylistically, Jaczko does do a good job using both Beltway and technical jargon to confuse the key issues in this book. I could see why he thinks this rehabilitation of his reputation stands a good chance in the current political climate, if he can convince readers of his painted tableau: the nobel Mr. Jaczko Goes to Washington facing off against Big Nuclear and the Deep State, wielding facts as cudgels when useful or ignoring them as phantasms when they are inconvenient.Save your money and skip picking up this title.

I now own many books on doing Needlepoint and this is now one of my favorites! Yes it would have been perfect if the stitch pictures were in color but other than that I recommend it. I bought s like new copy and it is in excellent condition.

A lot of information crowded into this book. It gives an example of each stitch but I feel it does not diagram how the stitch is done by showing what direction and the steps to do the stitch. I feel this is a book more for the experienced stitcher than a novice. t would take several months if not years to master even a large percentage of these stitches and all the uses for them. This is truly a large reference book.

There is no doubt - you can find a ton of stitches here. The written instructions are good, but I found two things that could use improvement.1. The stitches are listed alphabetically. This seems to make sense, but when you start a project and e.g. you're looking for an open stitch for a large area, you have to go through the book page by page to find a selection. I would have liked the stitches to be grouped by type or use. There is a chart in the front, but I am one of those impatient types who don't like flipping through books to find what I want.2. The black and white photos aren't always very clear. I know printing in color ups the price of books incredibly, I think having some color here - even duotones - would have helped. Some stitches looked completely different when I stitched them. I'm a relatively experienced needlepointer, so I know I wasn't misreading the instructions.So, better photos and better organization would make this book ideal (even better I think than the Ippolito book). Regardless of these flaws, this is still a good reference and one that I use regularly.

Informative, black and white photos, good instructions.

I have done crafts over the years and some embroidery, cross stitch, crochet, etc. But Ive always wanted to learn Needlepoint. For those of you who have never done it, I cannot recommend this book enough. It has so much information in it that is mind boggling. Big pictures, detailed instructions and how to use them and where. I am pleased with the book and the condition it is in (I ordered a used book). And it arrived in the mail promptly.

This was purchased for my son who is incarcerated and is in love with cross stitching. He is sharing this book with other inmates.

I just love to read any book by Rujuta. With this book particularly Rujuta just brings back my childhood. Because so many recipes and the "SuperFoods" of course that she has mentioned were all my childhood favorite. But as I grew up and started gaining few pounds I just stopped eating some of them. But its when I started reading her books, I realized how wrong I was. "Der aaye... durust aaye..."(Better late than never....) I would definitely recommend people to read this book and just embrace the foods that India has to offer. For people who are not from India, just go back to your roots and eat what you or your ancestors have been eating. Eat local produce.Live like a kid, Eat like a kid.... :)

A very refreshing and reassuring journey back to roots. Easy and entertaining reading. It brought back to mind all the eating habits and home grown food we had growing up in the village. I recommend it highly to anyone interested in healthy eating. It is certainly an eye opener for culinary experts especially those in the Indian diaspora.

Got the complete set for my daughter. Actually met the author in person and got him to autograph the first volume. Great read for boys and girls getting into comics or already into them. I'd say good for 10 and up with a proficient reading level

In addition Sally writes about "True Blue Zones: How Long- Lived People Really Eat", and "What to Eat? Translating the Wisdom of Our Ancestors into a Healthy Modern Diet". Nourishing Diets does include highlights of Dr. Weston A. Price's research, yet it expands far beyond it with a wide variety of references and geographic areas.For those of us who have a keen interest in how people nourished themselves historically, I highly recommend this book as an incredibly well-researched companion to Nourishing Traditions.  Having said that, I want to clarify that having the book Nourishing Traditions is not necessary to read and understand Nourishing Diets. My point is for all of us who already have Nourishing Traditions, this new book is different enough that I think it is a very worthwhile read. I found it to be very well-written and quite fascinating! Even though I have read a fair amount on this subject, I learned a lot more! We will read the book as a community in our Nourished Book Club on Facebook now that it has been released!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learned so much about the ancestral cultures. I am a student of history, genealogy is my hobby and I'm a devotee to cooking. To put all of my favorite things in one easy to read book is delightful. I am on my second read of the book because I want to make sure I pick up all the details. This book will be extremely helpful for someone eating in the Ancestral Way. Fad diets come and go but the old ways endure among those willing to seek them out.

I love history and really enjoyed reading about the traditional foods and their preparation of cultures from around the world. This book is full of interesting information, but is very easy to read and understand (not technical). Sally also includes a lot of interesting footnotes throughout the book to further explain various parts. It's also clear the author has a sense of humor. There were a number of times I laughed out loud reading this. The book is mostly information about the cultures, divided into a separate chapter for each. At the end of the book, it summarizes how to apply this knowledge in our own lives and includes recipes. She also references a number of books throughout and has a very long bibliography of books I will probably be looking up in the future. One author I was happy to see a mention of in the chapter on the American Indians is Charles C. Mann. I have read his 1491 book (here on Amazon; a fantastic book) on what the Americas were really like before Columbus. It's very eye-opening, and I wish the information was known by the masses. I was very happy to see that Sally included his information rather than just going with the "mainstream" fake knowledge that the Indians were all tree-hugging hippies living in the midst of thousands of miles of virgin wilderness.This book is mostly information, not solely a cookbook. If you want more information about traditional diets, read Weston A. Price's book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. And if you want more recipes, check out Sally's books about broth or Nourishing Traditions.

I found Sally Morell's NOURISHING DIETS fascinating. As CEO of the National Billiard Academy, diet is extremely important for athletes, so I read much about diets. This book takes all the guess work out of what we should be eating because Sally has done incredible research. It's also an easy read if you like history and learning about people's all over the world and then learning that there is a common denominator to all the diets - fat. Thank you Sally for another great book.

It was well written and ultra fascinating. The thing that stands out to me and resonates is the variety of foods all these different cultures ate. Yet, I consistently read from mainstream media how we once used to eat mostly plant-based foods. All these wild and interesting foods they ate are nothing I've ever heard before, but whole-heartedly believe it. They had to eat from the land and ate what was available. Surely, lots of plants, but not primarily as mainstream media would have us believe. I love Sally's books. I own every single one and frequently refer to them. Thank you very much for educating me.

This well written book on traditional diets around the globe is an enjoyable, informative read. The book is thoroughly researched. Not some low fat hype about what various countries supposedly ate, but footnoted evidence as ti what they really ate.

I've been using Nourishing Traditions original book for many years. This was an interesting background book, although not quite the necessity that Nourishing Traditions is.

How anyone could give this book just one star is mind-boggling and beyond comprehension. In the minds of America's neocon, military-obsessed leadership that was paranoid of anything remotely "Communist" after the Vietnam debacle, Central America offered a pathetic opportunity to erase some sordid memories. In fact, the author could have written a sequel that included Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil ("Operation Condor"). Latin American history is one chapter after another of misguided U.S. policy -- you can toss in some Democratic presidents, too. The bitterness south of the border still exists today, and it's no wonder. Now I am going to read Galeano's "Open Veins of Latin America," taking the western destruction of Latin America back another four centuries. I live in a community that is nearly half Latino, and I am ashamed of the way U.S. has treated their countries in the past. To cavil over a few excerpts over LaFeber's book bares one's decidedly anti-liberal and anti-populist bent and merely comes off as quibbling with another embarrassing piece of U.S. foreign intrusions. They happened in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, too.

REad the earlier edition, and this one is better. More info, and more analysis based on time to view the ongoing results. Why people don't like americans is very simple. Our foreign policy is geared toward deceit, duplicity, and exploitation. Very basic and not rocket science. The concepts and principles outlined in this book are applicable to any place in the world America goes. Problem: Haliburton, Kellog Brown and Root, inconsistent intelligence operations, american corporate exploitation, corporate contractors, unreliable foreign policy, disrespect for other cultures. We can't change the world. We have to adapt to it. We are not the big boys on the street we used to be.

"A reader" wrote a scathing review of this book, which actually inspired me to read it. "A reader" obviously has never read the book, and relies on the back cover quotes to critique the entire book. He uses the common "mistake" defense: if America causes a atrocity, it is a "mistake".This typical, preprogrammed, ideological, response just shows "a reader" has never read the book. Lafeber meticulously goes through the ENTIRE history of Central America and shows that America's support of dictators and the frequent American intervention is not a "mistake". Americas foreign policy instead is a very successful and profitable policy for American business interests and a small Latin American elite."it is very clear that this is agenda history or left-wing propaganda more than it is history."When you boil down what "A reader" is trying to say is that if this book does not sing the praises of Americanism (the religion of Americans), he will not read it."but if you are writing a "history" book be fair and objective and not so obviously political."What "a reader" means is a "history" which praises America, similar to high school textbooks. A history which ignores or justifies away all of America's massacres.If a history book doesn't have this tone, "a reader" will not read passed the back cover, nor unfortunately, will most Americans, to our neighbors to the south's detriment.Thanks "a reader" your mindless Americanism encouraged me to read this book!

I wish there was a newer edition to this text. LaFeber tells a poignant and accurate story of contemporary history in Latin America, and how U.S. foreign policy helped to shape the region's socio-economic and political life for the worst.

All the myths and misconceptions of Latin America are explained in great detail in this book. A great read! No doubt about it. I'm seeing things in a different way now for sure.

Weyn's future has a grimly plausible feeling to it that will draw in readers. She does resort to a deus ex machina to save the day, and the characters and situations aren't fully fleshed out. We really have no idea how much we rely on fossil fuels in this world. When I think of a gas shortage, I think of having to cut down on driving, but really had never thought of just how many products are petroleum based, from toothpaste to ball point pens. Our reliance on fossil fuels is terrifying, and Empty by Suzanne Weyn shows just how quickly everything can fall apart.Sage Valley is your average town full of middle class folks who work hard every day and live their lives as though nothing in the world will ever drastically change. When a global-wide oil shortage begins, however, they are in for a rude awakening. Suddenly kids are biking to school. Sports teams stop because they can't drive to the opposing schools. Gas costs $40, $60, then $90 dollars per gallon. People can't heat their homes. Medicines are in short supply. Food deliveries stop. Very quickly, people start to get desperate.Tom is your average second-string football player who only worries about his crush, head cheerleader Nicki. When the gas shortage begins, his biggest concern is not being able to drive her home. Nicki's biggest concern is having to wear her glasses because there haven't been any deliveries of her contacts to the pharmacy in a long time. Gwen has gone from the outcast to the only kid who has a warm house thanks to her brother's black market dealings. As if the gas shortage wasn't the worst problem, the climate change is finally about to get the better of them. Two enormous hurricanes from the gulf coast and the East Coast merge and make their way up the East to practically destroy everything in their "superhurricane" path. Disaster relief is virtually nonexistent in the current times, and Sage Valley is left to survive by its own devices.This is not only a story of how everything falls apart (although that is certainly in the foreground). It is also a story of how tragedy brings people together. How people in dire circumstances can become selfless. Heroes even. It is also a story of how things need to change if we are to survive. Towards the end of the story, the kids find a "Green" house that was built to be self-sustainable with low amounts of electricity, food production, and heat. Are we prepared for what is going to happen when the non-renewable resources we gobble up are gone?In the deluge of apocalyptic books these days, this is a fairly good one, especially for adolescents. It directly deals with their lives and can be an eye-opener for just how drastically their worlds can change. Sometimes it is hard for kids to understand how things truly affect them, like wars, natural disasters, etc., until they are in their backyards. This book puts the disaster in the worlds of these kids. It is also a fairly short, low-skilled book that would be perfect for younger or low-skilled students. The plus is that it isn't nearly as depressing as some of the stuff out there. Sure everything changes, but that doesn't mean it needs to be the end of the world! We can still find ways to survive, even in circumstances we never thought we would face!

I had high hopes when I picked up this book. The plot/scenario sounded interesting - no matter what side of the "green" debate one stands on, I don't think anyone can deny that oil *will* run out some day, whether it's in the near future or a few generations from now - and I've grown used to young adult books dealing with dystopian, apocalyptic or just plain disaster plots in an intelligent and decently written way.So, yes, "Empty" held a lot of promise for me. Unfortunately what it turned out to be was a book that read like a lecture aimed at ten-year-olds (or perhaps eight-year-olds), certainly not young adults - although the half-hearted attempt at romance and characters in their later teens seemed to indicate otherwise. The language and narrative style were so simplistic it was hard to get truly interested and the lecturing, the "message" came through so hard and clear that it occasionally nearly turned me off (and I'm by and large a supporter of the ideas being promoted here).That's not to say the book was *all* bad - it was a quick and at times not completely dull read, and the characters, while not exactly engaging or with a huge amount of personality, weren't off-putting. Might be a decent read for a child / pre-teen who is interested in saving the planet and life without oil, I suppose.

We used this book as a book study in my 8th grade science classroom. The book started out really great, but the huge hurricane seemed to come out of nowhere. My kids were super annoyed with the ending.

This author has shown the tragedy and hope of our depletion of nonrenwable resources. So many people disregard concerns today in terms of this situation. An excellent read for students!

Received this book in excellent brand new condition. This was purchased as required reading for my daughters science class.

This book was very interesting to read for me. I noticed many other reviews said this book is poorly written, but also that the reader did not finish the book. I will admit that in the beginning, the book is dull and lacked dialogue. Apparently, the author had never heard of the expresion"Show not tell." But as the book progressed, things started to happen and get more interesting. It was almost as if the bad author left off in the middle of the book and another better writer took over. I overall enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to anyone who is willing to bear through the first few chapters and not just give up on it.

This is a very good book but very short. This is not to say, however, that it does not make a lasting impression. This highly probably dystopian future spells out our dependency on non-renewable energy sources and makes a compelling argument for alternative energy sources. Complex, relatable, characters who develop as the book goes on. Enjoyable!

I had this book last year and lost it while I was in the middle. I just had to buy it again so I could finish it!
