The New Revised Standard Version is recognized in scholarly circles as the most accurate translation into English of the original Hebrew and Greek texts. In the tradition of its predecessors, the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, the NRSV was designed to be the "standard" version for English–speaking people across all denominations, which in many ways it has become. None of the new, more sectarian translations have approached its standards of elegance and accuracy. This unique one–column setting allows people to read the Bible as work of literature. I don't usually post reviews, but I need to post a warning here - my copy has 64 pages missing (or more precisely, some text is duplicated while other text is missing). See attached photo. I only get from Job chapter 28 onward. Note the skip in pages numbers. (skip from page 426 to 619 if image is too small to read. Also my copy is black hardback with gold dust jacket, copyright 2007, purchased in mid-2018).
Very pleased. Reasonable in price - good in quality. Things I like include: the fact that it lays flat. fits nicely in my hand, is hardback and importantly the print is generous in size without being "large print". The only negative for me is that I prefer two column bibles. With all the plusses of this Bible that is a small concern.
LOVE this bible. The cover is absolutely beautiful and feels wonderful on the hands. It feels a lot more expensive than it actually is. The font is larger and the single column text makes it easy to read. The paper is standard bible paper (if the paper was any thicker, the book would need to be HUGE). I personally love the way bible paper feels, so the paper is not a problem to me. Word of advice for those who love highlighting scripture: get a set of gel highlighters and you will not have any bleed through :-)
The unique format really works. Having poetic books in two columns, and books more full of prose/ narrative in single column makes for a great reading experience.It's the highest quality NRSV I have found saving the $180+ calf/ leather/ goat skin versions. It is like a pew Bible (hardcover) but higher quality.UNFORTUNATELY, mine is dinged. The back cover has some damage. I had to put some tape to reinforce it. I may try other cosmetic fixes if it gets worse. The damage is the only reason I have downgraded my review to 4 stars. Photos included so you can see for yourself.
I thoroughly enjoy this Bible because of the single-column format. I switched to only single-column Bibles a while ago because the Bible is meant to be read not just referenced. Since I like this translation and it lays flat, this is the perfect "reader's Bible". The text format makes it seem like you're reading a novel and encourages you to read more.
The ad said large print but it was not as large as I expected. Other than that an excellent bible.
A beautiful bible that is very easy to read. I love how the main chapters are all one column per page, as in a normal book. This increases readability exponentially. Also, there are lovely woodblock illustrations that give it a timeless feel.
I have used this for a research project, and it is the most accurate and ecumenical version of the Bible available.
