From Booklist
Morgan encourages readers to carefully observe seashells, the homes of mollusks, and along the way discusses life-cycle details (egg cases, progressively larger shells) and the differences between bivalves and gastropods; cautions against separating live mollusks from their shells (which are part of their bodies); and offers evidence of life experiences (a crack or chip may indicate a battle with a predator). Stunning full-color photography dominates each spread; particularly intriguing are the whelk egg case and the hermit crab toting its adopted shell. The text is brief but clear, serving mostly as extended captions for the photographs. Morgan notes that she intends her offering to inspire wonder and stimulate questions rather than provide facts for memorization, and she recommends its use with children who have some prior experience with shells. Appended with photo notes, suggested activities, and a recommended website, this will be welcomed by teachers following the National Science Teachers Association’s observation-based learning guidelines as well as young families returning from a trip to the beach. Grades 1-4. --Kay Weisman

Although each page is dominated by photographs of excellent quality, it is acknowledged that this is no substitute for the real thing and readers are urged to get out and experience things for themselves through a range of suggested activities. ... Further resources are available online, but these are mainly just extended versions of the suggested activities in the books. These books would be great accompaniments to a nature table, or as invitations to exploration for students to use independently, but would be equally effective as coffee table books for students to browse during quiet reading for example, as a simple reminder of some of the amazing features of our world. --Primary Science January/February 2014

I read this book to my students after observing seashells. I chose to read it after because while observing, they had some questions, such as why some shells had holes in them, and this book answered those questions! It could be used either for children reading on their own, or as a read-aloud in class. The pictures are big and colorful. It's a wonderful book with great images and information for all ages!
Great photos, informative at a level my 3 year old could understand and I even learned a thing or two. My 3 year old is obsessed with seashells and is been wanting to buy this book a while. It didn't disappoint!
Fabulous pictures and great non-fiction text perfect for young children! My students love finding the shells in our collection that match the pictures in the book....thanks!
Beautifully written and illustrated!
Our entire family LOVES all of the books by Emily Morgan. :) This is one of our favorites! Great books!
arrived in poor condition. unfortunate as it was a gift.
I learned so much about seashells!
I read this book to our first and fifth grade science buddies. Suddenly my students were bringing in shells and egg cases from the beach to share and classify. Emily Morgan has a way of drawing all children into the awe of science around them. It gives them an appreciation for the wonders of nature all around them everyday.
