This is a great book for young children interested in outdoor preservation. The illustrations are beautiful and the book is inspiring to children and enjoyable for adults to read aloud. Recommend, ESPECIALLY if you are taking children to Yosemite. I do wish the author left out the information about John Muir’s experience of childhood abuse (it mentions harsh beatings from his father and says, “his father considered himself a religious man therefore did not beat them on Sundays”) Personally I found that offensive and at very least inappropriate for a children’s book and not vital to his story—of course confusing to children, maybe better in a biography written for adults! This was the only content I found objectable, and that I skip.My 6 year old son enjoys the story very much! It’s a short chapter book, probably read in about 30 minutes, lots of adventures and fascinating details about John Muir’s interest in science and mechanics, the natural world and of course preservation of one of the most spectacular places in the world.

A basic introduction to the life of John Muir, written for children in early elementary school. The illustrations are beautiful and add to the story line. We bought the book because two of our grandsons, ages 8 & 11, will be visiting Muir Woods in California in March. So, we wanted them to learn a little about John Muir. However, after reading John Muir's own writtings, I wish this book had been more faithful to his words. I thought the stories of his younger life were exaggerated and not true to Muir's own words. However, a different book where the author used Muir's own words was too long for the boys at this age and the pictures were only in black and white. So, that is why I chose this book.

I usually do not write reviews but this book was fantastic for my 4th grader! He loved it. It was filled with great information about John Muir's life and was told in a very engaging way! The illustrations are really beautiful! I will be buying more of these biographies especially if they are written by Lasky.

Students are now able to get some knowledge on a great man who helped bring environment to the forefront.

Book received as promised, brand new. My students loved the story, which tied in with our theme of protecting the environment.

Christmas gift. I hope my daughter likes it, but I can tell you I love it. Gorgeous artwork. I did a term paper on John Muir in 10th grade, about 30 years ago. I have bought my daughter a few other books like Stickeen, The Camping Trip that Changed America (awesome one), and another Muir biography. This book has all the bio, but the artwork.... man the artwork. It provides a whole other level for connecting with the material

Someone might say to me, “You know John Muir, of course.” And I’d answer, “Certainly.” I thought I knew him.Then I opened up Candlewick Press’s new biography of Muir for young readers and, I must confess, I really met this inspiring man for the first time. Sure, I knew that he had founded the Sierra Club; that he was responsible for helping to establish our first national parks; and even that he was famous for hiking incredibly long distances with minimal provisions in his shoulder bag. But this fun-to-read overview of his life by Kathryn Lasky really gives us a glimpse of Muir’s life in a fresh and detailed way, including lots of details I had missed.I wasn’t aware of his childhood in Scotland, which Lasky covers. I had no idea that Muir was involved in early research on receding glaciers. I didn’t know that he was a conscientious objector during the Civil War. I had no idea that he personally guided Theodore Roosevelt and Ralph Waldo Emerson in treks along his favorite trails.The truth about the best of children’s books is this: They’re for children—but they’re just as much for the adults who love them. That’s certainly true of this book!

Anyone who has experienced the majesty of Yosemite or the other national parks that were established in the wake of his advocacy for wild, public spaces, should recognize that Muir has played a role in helping create what America is today to a degree no less important than was played by its better known founding fathers.

I have had some experience with The Great Courses by The Teaching Company over the last ten or so years. I have had two DVD courses and several audio only ones. The majority of the course work fine in audio only with some exceptions like a course on the great works of art. I have not only learned a great deal from each course but have truly enjoyed them.A History of India was offered as a review copy from Recorded Books. India, as a country, a culture and a people, has long fascinated since I received a copy of The Far Pavilions by M. M. Kaye for my 16th birthday. I have not really had the opportunity to experience any non-fiction looks at India. A History of India was an excellent learning experience and achieved my goal of familiarizing myself with all of India, not just the historical fiction India.The course is taught by Michael H. Fisher, Ph.D., a professor of History at Oberlin College. Professor Fisher spent time living in India, with shorter periods in Pakistan and Bangladesh.He has a true love for the subject matter and it comes through in his lectures. Since this is an audio course, I would like to mention that the sound and production quality are excellent. Professor Fisher has a pleasant speaking voice. His pronunciations of foreign terms are clear and distinct so the listener can truly catch the word. When the same word comes up later, it is not an unknown term. He really does an excellent job.The course consists of thirty-six lessons of thirty minutes in audio format. Also included is a course guide in a pdf format. The course guide consists of a summary of each lecture, including some maps or photographs. The lecture summaries are rather more complete than normal summaries. Each lecture summary ends with a suggested reading list for those who want to explore more of the material covered in that lecture.What I really liked about the course was the completeness of the material covered. The first lecture, “Earliest History of the Indian Subcontinent” covers India’s geographic history. One of the things my children learned early in their education was that history occurs where it does for a reason. There were mountains that formed a barrier. There was a river that allowed a civilization to rise. There were weather conditions that changed the land and how it could be used. All of these are very important factors in why history happens where it does. The first lecture helps the listener understand how the geography of the Indian subcontinent shaped what was to come.The lectures continue with the migration of different peoples into the different areas of India. Literature and religion are not neglected but have several lectures dedicated to them. Each Indian empire is discussed. Lecture twenty-three begins the exploration of the influence of European Countries. The European conquest, rebellions and eventual Indian independence are covered next. The last two lectures examine the modernization of India beginning in the 1960’s and the 21st Century from the perspective of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the surrounding nations). It really is a complete course on the history of India.There are several ways to enjoy or utilize this course. The lectures can be listened to as time allows without reference to the course guide. The listener can read the lecture notes from the course guide and then listen to the accompanying lecture. Despite this minor issue, the CD is nonetheless a must-have for anyone wishing to learn about the history and culture of India. I would highly recommend it.

If you have a general concept of how the body works, then this book should be an ok read for you. There are some more complicated sections where the author goes into great detail about the various bodily functions and it can get confusing. He does try to give you a glossary type reference on these pages though which is both helpful and clever. For this complicated subject matter, I think he does a pretty good job at making it understandable for the average person. There is some repetition throughout the book where I felt like he was making the same point over and over again. Overall, I think reading it added value to my overall understanding of these four epidemics. Be prepared though to read it in small portions in order to best digest the information.

Was hoping it would have some recipes- it doesn't. But it DOES have great lists on what the child CAN eat, (very short list) and what the child CANNOT eat. Very, Very, Very long list, of everything she's BEEN eating- ckn nuggets, mac and cheese, yogurt... Wish i'd known about this before she LOVED those exact foods, or rather before I let her get hooked on these toxins!! Very important read.

As a mother and wife whose children and spouse are challenged with ADHD, and as a therapeutic massage therapist and body worker, I highly recommend this book to everyone! This has been an insightful and refreshing read! Thank you, Dr. Joe, for looking beyond the symptoms to the big picture!

One might wonder how much more we can hear about this fraught subject, but this collection of essays and stories manages to offer fresh perspectives. The editing is skillful. The writing is varied, but always good. I would say it is a "must-read" book about the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation and I strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to gain understanding of it. It should sell a million copies.Disclosure: My son, Assaf Gavron, wrote one of the chapters. He is good, but so are all the others.

A brilliantly written collection of essays by a variety of world class writers, sharing their impressions of the devastating effects of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, both for the Israeli and the Palestinian peoples. I have been able to read it only in small doses, allowing time to absorb the accumulation of disheartening and sometimes horrifying details that, like the occupation itself, weigh more and more heavily on the reader's consciousness, even as the repetition of similar experiences, their predictability, tends to inure one to the pain of them. Occasionally one of the essays would break through the gray hopelessness and leave me in tears, most notably Colum MacCann's, "Two Stories, So Many Stories." An important book for anyone trying to understand and contribute positively to the healing of this untenable and seemingly intractable situation.

This collection was very unique and revealing, particularly for a committed Zionist like myself. We should all be educated as to the suffering of the Palestinian people and understand their story as well as ours.

This a good book if you want to better understand the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from persons who have to deal with the Occupation on a daily basis, so I highly recommend this book if you are willing to confront the darkness that humans inflict on each other.

Invited by the book's editors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, along with the Israeli anti-Occupation group Breaking the Silence, to experience first hand the effects of Israel's Occupation of Palestinians living on the West Bank, the authors responded with their varied and often moving essays. An important book for anyone wanting to educate themselves about the Occupation and about its effect on not only the Palestinians, but on the young Israeli soldiers whose job it is to enforce the frequently harsh and sometimes seemingly arbitrary "rules" of the Israeli government.

About the Author

On-Kow Au has been a radio broadcaster by profession. Producing radio drama, magazine and documentary programs as well as being a live show host for over 20 years in Hong Kong, she continued her trade after emigrating to Canada in 1989. On-Kow Au worked in the Chinese radio station in Vancouver until her retirement in 2000. She also has been a Chinese newspaper columnist. With materials from her radio program and newspaper, she has published four books in Chinese. On-Kow Au started bowling at Craigengower Cricket Club in Hong Kong in 1987. After emigration to Canada in 1989, she has been actively involved in competitive bowling - winning both British Columbia Provincial and Canadian National Championships many times. She joined the Canadian Team from 1995 to 2000 and was sent to play in the Atlantic Rim Games ( 1997 and 1999 ), the Commonwealth Games (1998) and she won a bronze medal as skip of the Fours Team in the 1999 Asia Pacific Games. On-Kow Au never stops doing volunteer work for this sport in many ways. From 2003 to 2006, she served as Director of the Athletic Development Program for Bowls BC. During that time, she wrote this book and also produced a coaching DVD Lawn Bowling - the Sport for Life in both English and Cantonese dialects. On-Kow Au lives in Vancouver with her husband Chung-Pack Au who is her partner at work as well as in bowling. They have a son, a daughter and two grandsons.

With a deep knowledge of the complicated history and culture of the island, the author makes it easy for a visitor to seek out the really special parts of Taiwan, many of which (even in Taipei) are not centrally-located or widely promoted. For example, the National Palace Museum, a repository for the treasures that came from Beijing's Forbidden City, finds itself a bus ride from a suburban MRT station in Taipei, but the guide devotes a great deal of space to the museum and plenty of instructions on how to get there. As well, the multitude of natural attractions on the island are many, and they're spread far and wide, and the guide resists the temptation to focus on only the big ticket national parks. The inclusion of Chinese characters and pinyin for the placenames (which, like Taipei and Taichung often have names with alternative Romanization) is also a big help as, in the places where little English is spoken, the book can be shown to helpful locals when looking for a destination.

This book was ok, but lacked a lot of information I was looking for. I was hoping for a list of night markets in Taipei and found a few briefly mentioned, but nothing detailed. There was also no mention of Elephant Mountain (at least that I could find). A train map would have been helpful. One of the few color pages in the book is devoted entirely to birds. I love birds, but would rather see what the attractions look like. I wish the author had mentioned the “must sees” in a 3-day, 5-day, or week-long trip. A food guide with photos would be a nice addition since a lot of Taiwanese foods look different from foods seen elsewhere. And lastly, the index is poorly done. Look up Taipei 101 and it’s not in there.

Excellent travel guide well written. I went on a 15 trip to Taiwan (what a great place) and used this guide. Good descriptions, prices where almost spot on. Was a good companion for my trip. Highly recommended.
