About the Author

John McGahern wrote six highly acclaimed novels and four collections of short stories, and was the recipient of many awards and honors, including an award from the Society of Author, the American Ireland Fund Literary Awards, the Prix Ecureuil de Littérature Etrangère and the Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Amongst Women, which won both the GPA Book Award and the Irish Times Award, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. He died in 2006.

I am only a few years younger than John McGahern and my maternal grandparents grew up in County Leitrim prior to coming to the US in the early 1890's. McGahern chose to focus on his early years for most of this book because, in many ways, it is an ode to his mother. The author's Mom was an educated woman who taught in the local schools, but sadly, she died from cancer when the author was 9 years of age. From then on, he and his 4 younger siblings were raised by several "hired girls" and his father, who was a Sargeant in the Garda (the Irish Republic national police).McGahern, who died around the time this book was published, was an excellent writer who captures what life in County Leitrim was like as he was growing up in the late 30's and 40'. He describes how he rode his little bicycle for miles at a very young age in order to spend the weekend with his father where he was stationed. We are also told how his demanding father had him cutting turf from the bog from an early age and that his father seldom, if ever, uttered a work of praise or encouragement to him or his siblings.Later in the book, we learn that some of McGahern's writings were banned in his native country. It is to his credit, that McGahern never engages in tirades against his tyrannical father or the Catholic Church in Ireland. However, from this book and his writings in general, it is clear that he stood up to both his father and the Church.

It is hard not to compare favorably this memoir of an Irish childhood with Angela's Ashes. Mcgahern had a difficult time: his beloved, saintly mother died when he was nine leaving him and his younger sisters to be raised by their brutal, sadistic father.He tells it like it was in a non-exploitative, straightforward way, without playing it for laughs.He was expected to enter the priesthood, and he accepted this, until he discovered a different world through his love of reading.He paid a stiff price for his independence, but anyone who reads this, and his other works, will be glad he did manage to find his own way.

Irish literature is justly recognized as some of the most remarkable in any language. John McGahern's Memoir ALL WILL BE WELL was a revelation. It is an account of his life from the perspective of adulthood, focusing upon his childhood and specifically the early death of his Mother. But more than that it is an intimate story of one family that attains a kind of universality in its particularity.

Excellent memoir about the author's childhood. He shows a very interesting picture of the Catholic Church in Ireland and how they influenced all walks of life. He paints a sad picture of his father. He is an amazing author telling about the day to day life in Ireland.

John McGahern's memoir summarises the leitmotifs of his fictional works, where recurring themes of abused children, put-upon wives, and dominating, "old-school" husbands are echoed here. Indeed, one can trace the genesis of the themes of his novels from the people, places, and circumstances that provide the unity of his prose in "All Will Be Well".And the kind of man and writer into which McGahern matured is elegantly presented in this quote (p. 87):"I am sure it is from those days that I take the belief that the best of life is life lived quietly, where nothing happens but our calm journey through the day, where change is imperceptible and the precious life is everything".

McGahern delves into his source material. This autobiography is as gracefully written as his novels. He reveals his courage as a writer and as a person who somehow had the strength to invent himself.

This book would more aptly be titled, "An Introduction to Powershell." I'm having to Google any sort of advanced use of functions which this book covers.For example, it covers multi dimensional arrays in a single page. A brief example of a multidimensional array with "hard coded" values is shown. The book does not show how to add or reference the values dynamically as almost everyone will need to do.Rinse and repeat for the various subjects. This book is good to get a beginner view on Powershell but it's definitely not for advanced use or "Mastering."

An excellent book to start with to understand and take your powershell scripting to the next level.

Very difficult reading. Absolutely not for the beginner. I never gave up on this type of book until now.

Giving 3 stars because I don’t consider this a “mastering” book. It’s more of a reference guide/learn it fast guide. I’ve read multiple books, and this book is lacking detail and content.

Great for entry level powershell users

I really enjoyed this book. full disclosure: - i was given a copy by the publisher to review, but i would happily have paid for it. i am a Microsoft trainer, and deliver the Microsoft 10961 "Automating Administration with Windows Powershell" course three or four times a year; this book makes an excellent supplement to that course, especially now Microsoft only give students the electronic skillpipe version of the training material. The book not only covers but expands on all the course material, providing in-depth explanations, tips and tricks and pointing out some of the pitfalls. There are also a number of chapters on subjects that are not covered in the course that have become more important in the last few years, such as working with REST, HTML and JSON calls, and testing using Pester. Add in an excellent introductory chapter to working with .NET and all the powershell regex i ever want to see, and the book is a winner. i am recommending it to my colleagues and students.if there was one thing that could be improved upon, it would be the examples. i would like to see more 'real-world' examples, using things an admin might do, rather than some of the simple ones that are given to demonstrate the syntax.other than that, i loved it. i'll be forking out for a paper copy i can put next to my first edition "powershell scripting and toolmaking" book.
