American Plastic: A Cultural History

From Publishers Weekly

Meikle, professor of American studies and art history at the University of Texas, presents a splendid history of plastic. The book is authoritative, thorough, interdisciplinary and intriguing. As aptly characterized in the preface, "the narrative itself takes on a certain plasticity, touching in turn on the histories of technology and invention, of industry and marketing, of industrial design and consumer culture." The author adroitly balances the different perspectives. He traces the course of plastics from 19th-century celluloid and the first wholly synthetic bakelite, in 1907, through the proliferation of compounds (vinyls, acrylics, polystyrene, nylon, etc.) and recent ecological concerns. Amply considered in context are the cultural influences of plastics, which sprang from the original motives of "substitution, imitation, and innovation" to condition our present perceptions, language, lifestyles and expectations. The general attitude of the public toward this industry is ambivalent; the historical details prove instructive. Interested readers of whatever predisposition will likely enjoy this comprehensive and thoughtful treatise. Illustrations. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

While many people would like to think that this is the Information Age, we are in fact living in the Age of Plastics. Since 1979 the production of plastic has far outpaced that of steel. It is doubtful that any of us could envision our world without plastics. From the Barbie dolls we grew up with to the cars we drive, for better or worse, plastics have shaped the world we live in. This scholarly and comprehensive work, by an American studies professor and author of Twentieth Century Limited: Industrial Design in America, 1925-1938 (Temple Univ. Pr., 1981), is nontechnical and emphasizes the social and cultural impact of plastics. Meikle's book is so enjoyable that this reviewer began underlining and writing margin notes while reading. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in understanding contemporary society.James Olson, Northeastern Illinois Univ. Lib., ChicagoCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Very detail history of the progression of plastic in America

Good Read!

This is a wonderful, precise, highly entertaining book, especially when it focuses sharply on the chemistry and business of plastics. It tells the fascinating story of the origins and development of plastics in the USA (which practically means elsewhere in the world, also) and the personalities of those that created or discovered them. Economically and stylishly written, with impeccable research, this is anything but a dry academic treatise.Certainly, it means to comment on culture as well as the progress of chemistry, and this it does, particularly in the last chapter. Even though I'm a mild Nixon admirer, I didn't mind it (much) when he was brought into the discussion in that closing chapter, which tackles the broader 'meaning of plastic'. Most academics are liberals, which naturally influences their choices of political Exhibits A -- which might not be the ones *I* would choose to illustrate my point. Unfortunately for the argument, Nixon was closer to a 'conviction politician' and did not have the purely opportunistic character or nature that the quoted observers believed he had -- as liberals, they no more understood Nixon's motives than they understand *any* non-Leftists. The author hints that they might be wrong, but in such a way as to leave untouched the suggestion that Nixon was no good but that those opposed to him (and different, and younger) were. So for me, that point fell flat because the supposed experts didn't know what they were talking about. But in the final chapter we have moved away from the real subject of the book, from the nitty gritty of creative adventure.Anyway, I'm pleased to see that this formerly out-of-print book is now available on Kindle, but if you can get the hardcover edition, the full-colour plates in the middle and numerous black and white photos throughout might be worth it.

Meikle produces a book, a text, really, that is almost imperative to every student and instructor of Sociology or Cultural History. The book serves as more than a technological manifest of an object's history, as many tend to do, and exposes a critical part of our modern lifestyles.Few can ignore that plastics exist througout our modern lives more than ever before. In fact, plastics are some pervasive that few care to remember them any more. Such an important material, a material so born in human creation, deserves due notice. American Plastic is just that. The reader stands to benefit from Meikle's background in art history. The development of plastic in the Twentieth Century restricts plastic's popularity not for its utility but rather for its art. The art of plastic became manifest to me when I started working in plastics a few years ago. Before I left, I was able to witness first-hand the development of plastic parts for the myriad "toys" we see today. My division was merely responsible for coloring the material, yet this step was crucial more than any other merely because American's have an aversion to the ugly.We shun the idea of plasticity, a word filled with images of large infinte primary colors and decades long past, but we forget that it is the same plastic we use in our cell phones, computers, soda bottles and cars that we cannot live without. Meikle's work exemplifies this artistic aspect as a factor as important as the technology behind the material.Nonetheless, he does not fail to provide the reader with a rich history of the technological, political and sociological development of plastic. Meikle does not stray for his purpose, and perhaps this is partly why this book is so enjoyable to read.

From Booklist

Melanie Middleton is 40, single, and pregnant. She hates old houses, and she hates Jack Trenholm, the father of her baby. She doesn’t fit into any of her clothes, and her housekeeper and Jack’s teenage daughter, Nola, are conspiring to get her to eat more flax and fiber. The historic house she inherited in Charleston, South Carolina, is haunted, and now some distant relatives of the previous owner have come to contest her right to live there. Then she discovers a 100-year-old infant skeleton in her backyard and a crib in the attic that matches one in Charleston’s history museum. Things get weirder from there, but Melanie is used to it; she and her mother have been communing with the dead for years. Madcap paranormal, historical mystery, and small-town romance complete with all the requisite quirky side characters collide in the latest and apparently final installment in White’s Tradd Street series. To enjoy its southern charm and romantic angst to the fullest, readers will want to start at the beginning of the series, with The House on Tradd Street (2008). --Susan Maguire

In the fourth and final book of the Tradd Street series, ambitious Charleston realtor Melanie Middleton prepares for single motherhood and helps solve the mystery behind the remains of an infant that are found in the foundation of her historic Tradd Street home. For those new to the series, definitely start at the beginning – these books all build off of each other.I loved the first three books in this series and was looking forward to finding out how it all ends. I read the first two books years ago and then read the third (The Strangers on Montagu Street) and fourth back to back recently. I’ll talk about this more in a minute, but I think reading the final two books back to back absolutely affected my opinion of the story, and Melanie in particular.Every book in the series includes a romantic and a mystery element, with the mystery involving the ghosts that inhabit historic Charleston homes. I loved Return to Tradd Street‘s mystery, but wasn’t as keen on this installment’s romantic element. This mystery was fairly complicated – I had to read over the “here it is on a silver platter” explanation TWICE before I fully understood it. But, this is a good thing, because Montagu Street‘s mystery was a bit simplistic and I easily figured it out on my own. Even after it was solved, this mystery left me with a real dilemma about the honorable course of action, which added depth to the book.On to Melanie…WOW, did she ever drive me crazy in this book!! Her stubbornness and insistence on avoiding things (even really important things, like going to the doctor when you’re pregnant!) really made me dislike her in this book. She started to rub me the wrong way towards the end of Montagu Street and then it just snowballed in Return to Tradd Street…I think because I read the last two books back to back. Apparently, Melanie tries my patience so much that I need a break from her between books! My frustration with Melanie’s avoidance issues was also the reason I wasn’t as keen on this installment’s romantic element, but I don’t want to ruin the story by saying anymore than that.Despite my annoyance with Melanie in this book, I liked the ending to the series and particularly loved this installment’s mystery. The whole series is a great choice if you’re looking for a light, quirky read!Had I need less annoyed with Melanie, this would have been a 5 star review! For more reviews, check out my blog, Sarah's Book Shelves.

Charleston, South Carolina is one of my favorite cities. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been there. It is no wonder I fell in love with RETURN TO TRADD STREET. The descriptions of Charleston are so vivid, I instantly recognized places I have been. I’ve stayed at the Charleston Place Hotel, and it’s every bit as elegant as Karen White portrays it. The Palmetto Café where the main character Melanie (Mellie) Middleton and her best friend meet for lunch is not to be outdone. I don’t think there is a museum I haven’t visited, and Tradd and Legare, East Bay Street, South Battery, and Broad are streets I have walked.Mellie has inherited a beautiful stately old Charleston home, as well as a housekeeper, and a dog named General Lee from Nevin Vanderhorst after only meeting him once. She is a realtor that specializes in old homes, and she met him to discuss putting his house on the market. She is pregnant and has told the father Jack Trenholm she won’t marry him. Jack has a teenaged daughter, a talented musician, who has the typical teenage clashes with her dad. Nola and Mellie have bonded, and Mellie often finds herself in the role of “mother”.The story was fantastic. I could hardly put it down. There are several conflicts in the story that Mellie needs to solve. Mysteriously, she hears a baby crying while in her house. Is she in love with Jack? Will she get to retain ownership of the house? Does she even want the house? How will she and Jack work out the details of parenthood after the baby is born? There is a lot of action to keep you turning the pages. The characters were fascinating. Do Mellie and her mother have psychic powers? Can anyone be as handsome as Jack? The Gilberts come into the story, and in the beginning I disliked them, but as Mellie learned more about them and came to like them herself, so did I. Sophie, Mellie’s best friend, has a very colorful way of dressing, not at all stylish, but is what everyone wants in a friend. I could describe these characters and more in greater detail, but I don’t want to spoil the book for other readers. This is the first book by Karen White that I’ve read, and it definitely won’t be the last. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance with a bit of a mystery as well.

This book, the fourth in the Tradd Street series by Karen White has me a bit perplexed. I read the first three books and gave five stars to each; however, I just cannot do that for Return to Tradd Street. The main character, Melanie, is becoming quite annoying with her negativity and constant mind chatter that doesn’t seem to be in harmony with reality. There didn't appear to be a real reason why Melanie should be nursing a broken heart. As well, there was so much more that could have been developed in the story including back-stories and character formations for the Detective and the Gilberts. I don’t know why characters Rebecca and her fiancé Marc Longo had a role in the story at all. It took me considerably longer to finish reading this book than it would normally take a book of this size. I kept putting it down; it wasn’t a page-turner like the others in White’s series.I am normally quite interested in White’s writing and the manner in which she forms her story and even though this book did not strike my fancy, I am familiar enough with White’s books and her writing style that she will continue to be a favorite author and should there be a fifth in the series, I’ll certainly read it.Other books that I've read and enjoyed by Karen White are:THE MEMORY OF WATERTHE BEACH TREESSEA CHANGE- See more at: [...]

Much like Mark Felt's advice to Woodward and Bernstein to "follow the money," Mark Kurlansky follows the salt wherever it may lead. "Salt: A World History" is truly global in its scope, traveling from ancient China and Egypt to Morton Salt, often jumping between geographically disparate regions to follow the themes of salt mining, salt as a food preservative, and modern understandings of salt. At first, these leaps may jar the reader, but the larger themes are easily apparent and the internal logic holds true.Kurlansky appears to have left no possible source unmentioned and his work touches on politics, religion, language, food, technology, trade, travel, and every other topic remotely related to salt. His book could easily serve as a world history primer for those who have never pursued an academic interest in history while simultaneously offering new insights to academic historians. In his introduction, Kurlansky writes, "The search for love and the search for wealth are always the two best stories. But while a love story is timeless, the story of a quest for wealth, given enough time, will always seem like the vain pursuit of a mirage" (p. 13). Though there are no longer wars to control salt, Kurlansky so thoroughly demonstrates its importance both throughout history and in modern times, that readers could never view the various quests for salt as pursuits of a mirage.

One of my neices in college recommeded this book. I've read it twice as I usually do when the book is as good as this one.If you like wide-ranging and well-written books such as those written by Jared Diamond, you'll love this book. I've enjoyed reading, especially history all my life, and this book is the reason why: I learned a lot I didn't know.I certainly never realized that salt has been critical to human existence for thousands of years. From prehistoric times, the easily obtainable salt supply was far more limited than now, and salt sources were often the basis of human settlements word-wide throughout history until only recently. The book is never tedious or boring. Reading the book showed me (once again) that a well-written history book can be a fascinating enjoyment.FEU

With so many other reviews I will keep this short......Who in the world could make such a dry subject so interesting, entertaining and informative? Only Mark Kurlansky. Kurlansky has a natural, easy and fluid flow to his words that make him a joy to read. This work spans the years from the very first know salt works to the modern day efforts of Leslie and Morton. He spends a lot of time with the makers of Tabasco on Avery Island La. because that story is so darn interesting-and the product is familiar to us all. It turns out that the hot sauce maker is co-located with an underground pillar of salt that might be 40,000 feet deep. And don't let me get started on the complexities of Chinese cooking, not to say the inventiveness of Chinese salt manufacturers. This is an excellent story from a top flight writer.

This book should not have been this good. I mean, really, who would expect that a critical history of Salt, would make for a good read. But this is a darn good book. Mixing history, economics, anthropology, biology and cooking, it's an eye opening view of something that the modern world takes completely for granted. The writing is enjoyable and the author really takes you on a journey through humanity's love of, and dependence on, common table salt.

I had no idea that the word "salary" derives from the ancient Roman practice of paying soldiers with salt. This is just one of many dozens of fascinating little factoids peppered, if you will, throughout "Salt."The modern world takes salt for granted. But for most of mankind's history, salt cultivation and transport was a massive enterprise across every civilization. This is a fascinating, illuminating read, very well written and generously illustrated. It's one of those books you never forget. Highly recommended.

Kurlansky offers a wide-ranging history of salt--detailing its many uses--from food preservation to gunpowder and de-iceing roads. He talks about its various forms--sea salt, rock salt, and other salts related to sodium chloride, and discusses the many ways it is produced, shipped and marketed. As it is a bulk item generally produced with low labor costs, high shipping costs can shut down any active source. Salt has long played a political role--being used to pay workers or soldiers (salary), provided. free to citizens, or taxed as a reliable source of government revenue (but where the temptation to abuse the taxing power may also. arise, leading to citizen uprisings). Throughout the book recipes that use salt in one way or another, and taken from historical. sources, are reproduced. With the modern use of refrigerators and freezers salt is less used to preserve food, but continues to be an important raw material in many industries.

This book is built upon the stuff that for a non-professional historian would be the material for a wonderful and deep 20 page article. Salt .... a resource that was the basis of civilizations, commerce and war. The 'petroleum' and OPEC of the ancient world. But all the detail on recipes for medieval fish stew (or whatever) were wonderful to know to exist, but left me bored and frequently skipping pages. I will give it three stars for comprehensive research and a great embedded article, but really, the detail was too much. Two stars? FYI I have a degree in history....but that was 30 years ago, and meanwhile I have resided in the world of commerce. Other minds will differ; peace to all.

Great read for the history buff. Very interesting details of how a variety of things came to be and the roll salt played on it. While I wouldn't put it in the category of "non-fiction that reads like fiction", it held my attention very well and seems to be written very well and an easy read. Also contained a number of ancient recipes which illustrated that it sometimes took months, weeks, or days to prepare certain dishes. Strange but entertaining.

Frank Cho: Women- Selected Drawings Book Two gathers some of Frank Cho's finest drawings; some high lighting the models upon which he based the drawings, featuring details about the models, followed by renderings in black and white followed by what represents an attempt to show how the transition is made into color, as well as sketches made in pencil and those rendered in ink, by someone considered to be a rising star in graphic illustrations and constitutes a fine study of the female figure by an award winning artist; the finest black and white drawing with great detail which constitutes an excellent study in lighting, high lights and shadows being Seduction and the finest in ink being 50 Girls 50.Highly recommended.

I love Frank Cho! He's a great illustrator and he draws women beautifully. Pound for pound one of the best there is.The 1st Women book was amazing! Tons of content. Tons of sketches. Tons of pin-ups. His work from Marvel to Liberty Meadows and beyond. The 2nd book is lack-luster by comparison. There isn't tons of content. On one side of the book are the sketches and on the other are the inked versions of the SAME SKETCHES! What you're really getting is half the content doubled (once penciled and then inked). It was a bit of a rip-off and I wouldn't recommend it for anyone looking for the BEST of Frank Cho's work.

It's a book of pinup art. Could it sit comfortably next to Moran, Elvgrin, Vargas, Mozert, De Berardinis?Almost half of the book are color plates and that is a big improvement over the first book. Most of the color is digital by Nikos Koutsis, Nei Ruffino, Brandon Peterson, etc. The digital color is, for the most part, pretty average; not great, but not too bad either. One exception is "The Queen's Bath" with Brandon Peterson as the colorist. This is excellent and shows more attention to detail rather than simply using flood fills and gradients. But, truthfully, the best colorist is Frank Cho who has a few near the back of the book including a clean version of the cover which looks like it may have taken some inspiration from Gustav Klimt. All of the color plates have either the final pen & ink version or a preliminary sketch. The sketches are all good choices.Yes, this book is two-thirds the size of it's predecessor and if you prefer quantity over quality then this may be a factor for you. It wasn't a factor for me.There is no paper book cover on the hard bound edition which is a minor complaint and not worth knocking a star off. There is a forward by Geof Darrow (Shaolin Cowboy) which is amusing and gives the book a little more character. So I asked the question on how Cho's color pinups hold up next to other pinup artists... sadly, the digital coloring, with a few exceptions don't fare so well. Cho's own paintings, though, are just as good as any of the artists I've mentioned (although Olivia De Berardinis has a much broader vocabulary) and it was really nice to see some of that in this book.

In thIs second volume of his Women series Frank does it again. And by 'it' I mean provide our eyes with a smorgasbord of beautiful, strong and, at times, sensual and funny womanhood. These aren't wafer thin runway models, however. Lucky for us Cho likes his women with curves. Those curves might be plump butts or full breasts. They might be rounded shoulders and powerful thighs. Usually though, it's both.

Best comic style pinup tutorial that i have found i would recommend this for anyone who enjoys drawing beautiful women

nicely arranged fragments, sketches and drawings by an outstanding artist of the latest generation great for education, inspiration, and imagination

Frank Cho is the man who loves his cheesecake but he also loves to draw and knows when to put a line down and when to leave it out. His technique is almost flawless and he improves by degrees. He's in a tenuous place where his popularity could lead to stagnation, and, in some ways that is starting to show. I'm sure many would be fine with that. Not me.He has a lot of promise and I hope he continues to push himself. The content is fairly standard but even there he shows a love for rendering. The title leaves nothing the imagination as to its content. He has a singularly nice take on female form but he does need to consider mixing it up. To see him do a variety of attractive women should be his next goal but he is in comics so it's hard to imagine much pressure on his part to expand, and that's a shame. Catering to the fans who want a type, and define artists by that type is the dead end for innovation as an artist. Even a best selling popular one needs to look beyond the comfort zone and the, often, shallow demands of the fans to find the better artist residing in the recesses of a once creative drive.Frank is very talented and he needs to show it by taking some risks. That said, this is fine for what it, is but not for what it could be. That he does it so well is still very satisfying, as long as the viewer doesn't ponder those possibilities and opportunities being missed.

not enough different from the first, but the images are beautiful

This book is wonderfully colorful and fascinating, and my fifth graders love it. We use all of the statistics and facts for real-world math. There is everything from decimals to place value covered, but the kids don't mind because it's INTERESTING! This book answers the question, "why do we need to learn math?" Because math is EVERYWHERE and this book proves it. This is also a great resource for learning about technology, geography, history, science, nature...you name it.There is also a great section on government, and with the upcoming elections we will be using this in class to learn about that, as well. Everything is explained in kid-friendly terms.I ordered eight books for my class to share, and will be exchanging two because the binding is loose and pages were coming out the first day. However, Amazon makes returns easy so I'm not fussed about it.

My 9-year-old son has been disappointed that he couldn't find anything newer than 2002 in his school library or at the public library. After talking about it for weeks, I finally ordered the 2016 version. He does not put it down! He's been reading it cover-to-cover. He's curious about everything, so this book is great for him. A couple of the pages did start to easily slip out, though.

My autistic 7 year old loves these types of books and was delighted when he received this last week, yet every time he has picked it up to read one or more pages have fallen out. I thought it may be just him being heavy handed, but when I opened the book to see a double spread page , the same happened to me. Naturally he was distraught that his perfect book that he takes everywhere is falling apart although it is not yet a week old

My kids LOVE this Almanac! I have to admit, I wasn't expecting it to be full of so much useful and educational information (sorry, busy mom of 3 didn't read into the contents), but my kids are learning a lot of facts about the world. This book is engaging and intriguing to my kids. They love to share what they learned.

I've bought several of these as gifts for kids and they are a hit. Kids and adults love them, they are a go to reference book.

Full of great information for kids. My daughter keeps this by her bed and reads it almost every day. It's interesting and loaded with quick facts. A good start to getting kids interested in all manner of things.

Not much new compared to the previous versions of the Almanac for Kids, but our daughter loves these books.

We enjoy it a lot 1/2 hr with my son each day. You can learn lot from it!

A High Wind in Jamaica

Amazon.com Review

A High Wind in Jamaica is not so much a book as a curious object, like a piece of driftwood torqued into an alarming shape from years at sea. And like driftwood, it seems not to have been made, exactly, but simply to have come into being, so perfectly is its form married to its content. The five Bas-Thornton children must leave their parents in Jamaica after a terrible hurricane blows down their family home. Accompanied by their Creole friends, the Fernandez children, they board a ship that is almost immediately set upon by pirates. The children take to corsair life coolly and matter-of-factly; just as coolly do they commit horrible deeds, and have horrible deeds visited upon them. First published in 1929, A High Wind in Jamaica has been compared to Lord of the Flies in its unflinching portrayal of innocence corrupted, but Richard Hughes is the supreme ironist William Golding never was. He possesses the ability to be one moment thoroughly inside a character's head, and the next outside of it altogether, hilariously commenting. Irony finds a happy home indeed in the book's mixture of the macabre and the adorable. The baby girl, Rachel, "could even sum up maternal feelings for a marline-spike, and would sit up aloft rocking it in her arms and crooning. The sailors avoided walking underneath: for such an infant, if dropped from a height, will find its way through the thickest skull (an accident which sometimes befalls unpopular captains)." In that "such an infant" lies a world of mordant wit. In fact, throughout, Hughes's wildly eccentric punctuation and startling syntax make just the right verbal vehicle for this dark-hearted pirate story for grownups. Hughes enjoys some coy riffing on the child mind, as with this description of the way Emily handles an uncomfortable social situation: "Much the best way of escaping from an embarrassing rencontre, when to walk away would be an impossible strain on the nerves, is to retire in a series of somersaults. Emily immediately started turning head over heels up the deck." Even so, Hughes never sentimentalizes his subject: "Babies of course are not human--they are animals, and have a very ancient and ramified culture, as cats have, and fishes, and even snakes." Children, as a race, are given rough treatment: "their minds are not just more ignorant and stupider than ours, but differ in kind of thinking (are mad, in fact)." That madness is here isolated, prodded, and poked to chilling effect. But Hughes never loses sight of his ultimate objective: A High Wind in Jamaica is, above all, a cracking good yarn. --Claire Dederer

Review

"This brilliant, gorgeously written, highly entertaining, and apparently light-hearted idyll quickly reveals its true nature as a powerful and profoundly disquieting meditation on the meaning of loyalty and betrayal, innocence and corruption, truth and deception." — Francine Prose, Elle"During one snowy day, I read the whole book in one gulp. It was remarkable, tiny, crazy. I felt just like I did as a kid." — Andrew Sean Greer, All Things Considered, NPR “A surprisingly terrifying short novel about children kidnapped by pirates, elevated from its silliness by surprising moments of violence and introspection, as well as repeated flourishes of literary brilliance. Also, it’s funny.” —Emily Temple, Lit Hub, "20 Short Novels to Stay Up All Night Reading""A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes is like those books you used to read under the covers with a flashlight, only infinitely more delicious and macabre."— Andrew Sean Greer, All Things Considered, NPR“Cross a wacky seafaring adventure--Conrad gone awry via inept piracy--with an exploration of the consciousness of a child as radical and insightful as that provided by Henry James in What Maisie Knew, and you have A High Wind In Jamaica by Richard Hughes....By turns funny, ironic, and brutally sad, this is a complex and astonishing novel."—Sue Miller, Barnes and Noble Review

This little book exceeded my expectations and made me wonder how many other books, unsung or forgotten, are living out there on library shelves. The New York Review of books has opened a door into this lost world of words. This is the second book I have recently read from the NYRB collection. If you've grown tired of hunting for good reads in recently published fiction you might be interested in their selections.A High Wind in Jamaica describes children and their thinking as they actually might be. When one is too young to understand the workings of the adult world, one actually has a strange advantage. The action takes place in the mid-19th century. Briefly and without spoilers, seven children are sent by their parents from Jamaica to England to attend school. Early on, their ship is seized by pirates, the children with it. This is when the fun begins. If you have a fixed image of pirates and one of children as well, A High Wind in Jamaica will forever change that. As a retired teacher, I have been very aware of what children are capable of, both good and bad. Richard Hughes provides a playing field where all manner of fantastic adventure can take place. This book is compared to Lord of the a Flies, but I don't see the similarity other than both books focus on the actions and perceptions of children freed from the safety and care of responsible adults. It is all a little weird and horrifying. By all means read this book.

"A High Wind in Jamaica" is always on the "best novels" lists and when I finally got around to it, I've discovered that the adulation is deserved. It's one of the best things I've read for a long time. "A High Wind..." is sometimes compared to "Lord of the Flies," but they can teach "Lord of the Flies" in high school because the symbolism is pretty clear and the little-nerdy-guys vs big-peer-pressure-bullies characters are easy to point out and discuss. And there's no sex in "Lord of the Flies." (How could there be? It's all boys?!?) The plot of "A High Wind..." is high adventure: After a hurricane destroys the house of the British colonialists exploiting the poor in Jamaica, the Bas-Thorntons send their five slightly wild children (oldest brother John, followed by Emily, Edward, Rachel, and baby Laura) - along with the Fernandez's slightly older and more reserved children (Margaret and Henry) - back to Britain. But on the way back, they're kidnapped by pirates and undergo a number of extraordinary physical and psychological adventures before they're returned to the motherland. The violence in "A High Wind..." is pervasive and clearly important to the plot. Like the violence, the sex is scattered throughout the story, but appears ambiguous. But if you think about it, the sexual allusions result in inappropriate sex; some dirty filthy, socially unacceptable sex WITH PIRATES; a little sexual confusion among the children; and even a some gender play WITH PIRATES, all of which could be tough to talk about with tenth graders. The first half of the novel has plenty of funny, dry British incidents. The diction itself is often intentionally humorous. The pirates turn out not to be what you might expect, which is both funny and appalling at times. And the conclusion is completely ambiguous, ending in a very thought-provoking scene. This is a terrific novel that shouldn't be wasted on the young who wouldn't understand all the implications.

High-seas piracy and the complex psychological lives of children are brought together, quite strikingly, in Richard Hughes’s 1929 novel "A High Wind in Jamaica." This book looks ahead to William Golding’s "Lord of the Flies" in the way it suggests that the outward innocence of children may conceal a capacity for cruel and wicked acts; but Hughes’s presentation of these ideas seems to work at a subtler and more disturbing level than does Golding’s better-known 1954 novel."A High Wind in Jamaica" begins in, unsurprisingly, Jamaica, at a time when that singularly lovely island is still an English colony. I took this book along with me on a trip to Jamaica, and I found that the descriptive passages from the early part of the book capture well the paradoxical beauty of the island: “The air was full of the usual tropic din: mosquitoes humming, cicalas trilling, bull-frogs twanging like guitars. That din goes on all night and all day almost: is more insistent, more memorable than the heat itself, even, or the number of things that bite” (p. 18). The evocation of natural beauty, closing on a note of menace: it is strongly characteristic of the manner in which Hughes conveys setting and tells his story. The “high wind” of the novel’s title is a hurricane that strikes Jamaica and destroys the home of the Bas-Thorntons, an English family who, like many other Britons of that time, have come to Jamaica to recoup fortunes lost in the mother country. Struck by how narrowly the family survived the tempest that destroyed the family home, and concerned that their proper English children seem to be taking on “wild” island ways, Mr. and Mrs. Thornton decide that it is a propitious time to send their children to live in England, along with the children of a nearby Creole family.Yet Hughes’s narrator places considerable emphasis on the idea that the Thorntons – and, by implication, most parents – know almost nothing about the actual emotional lives of their children, in passages like this one:“It would have surprised Mrs. Thornton very much to have been told that hitherto she had meant practically nothing to her children….[I]t would undoubtedly have surprised the children also to be told how little their parents meant to them. Children seldom have any power of quantitative self-analysis: whatever the facts, they believe as an article of faith that they love Father and Mother first and equally. Actually, the Thornton children had loved Tabby [the family cat] first and foremost in all the world, some of each other second, and hardly noticed their mother’s existence more than once a week. Their father they loved a little more: partly owing to the ceremony of riding home on his stirrups.” (pp. 44-45)But the Clorinda, the ship in which the Thorntons have booked passage “home” to England for their children, is waylaid by pirates; and once the children have been taken onto the pirate ship, Hughes gets on to his real subject: the question of what children – especially the two oldest Thornton children, John and Emily – are capable of, once the restraints of ordinary civilization have been stripped away. The children-and-pirates scenario may seem like something reminiscent of J.M. Barrie’s "Peter Pan" (1904); but if anything, "A High Wind in Jamaica" works as a sort of anti-"Peter Pan." For one thing, the pirates, as led by a Danish captain named Jonsen and his Viennese first mate Otto, are not figures of operatic menace, like Captain Hook from Peter Pan or Long John Silver from Robert Louis Stevenson’s "Treasure Island" (1883); rather, they emerge as feckless and rather pathetic figures. Taking advantage of the indulgent attitudes of Spanish colonial authorities in the port of Santa Lucia, Cuba, they are operating a good 150 years after the supposed “golden age” of piracy: “Piracy had long ceased to pay, and should have been scrapped years ago; but a vocational tradition will last on a long time after it has ceased to be economic, in a decadent form. Now, Santa Lucia – and piracy – continued to exist as they always had: but for no other reason” (p. 96). And as their nautical misadventures unfold, Jonsen and Otto and the rest of the pirates show a remarkable capacity for poor and ill-informed decision-making. The more fateful, and more existentially troubling, words and actions and decisions come from the children."A High Wind in Jamaica" offers a couple of real surprises. When, for example, one major character leaves the novel, the circumstances of said event are described so routinely – in a single, declarative, 24-word sentence, about one-third of the way through the book – that the reader is likely to flip through the next couple of pages in search of a passage saying “It was only a dream” or “It was not as serious as had been expected”; but no such passage is to be found. Comparably surprising is an action that Emily carries out after Captain Jonsen’s pirate ship has captured a Dutch merchantman.Hughes is one of those early-20th-century British modernists whose literary consciousness seems to have been molded in large part by the devastation of the First World War. His narrator sets forth the events of "A High Wind in Jamaica" with a knowing, rueful outlook on human flaws and failings, occasionally moving from the novel’s characteristic third-person omniscient point of view to passages of first-person narration in which the narrator stresses what he does not know – as when the narrator says of Mrs. Thornton that “She was a dumpy little woman – Cornish, I believe” (p. 44).This work reminded me of the novels of Robert Graves and Malcolm Lowry, fellow Britons who lived and wrote during the same period; and if you like books like Graves’s World War I memoir "Good-Bye to All That" (1929) or Lowry’s novel "Under the Volcano" (1947), then "A High Wind in Jamaica" will probably appeal to you as well.

I came across this book when reviewing another book for single moms. Jennifer did such a great job telling her personal story combined with wise guidance into many areas every single mom faces. I could not stop reading her book until I finished it. Being the same age as her, my childhood did not have the trauma she experienced, however I was facing the same challenges she did when in 2011 I found myself completely on my own with a four year old holding my hand and a three year old hugging tight my leg. Having my family in Central Europe and spending three years at home on maternity leave, made this transition even more intense. I remember my mind racing like a wild horse: "How am I going to provide for all three of us after 3 year break from a work force? How am I going to pay for the daycare? It is costing almost the whole paycheck!!!!" The truth is that God always showed me a way out of seemingly impossible situation, I just did not realize it during the first years. After two years stumbling as a single mom feeling like swimming in the middle of ocean with high waves going over my head, I switched to a new church that is very welcoming, and started consciously connecting to Lord on a daily basis. Reading Jennifer's book gave me a peace and hope. Two most important ingredients every single mom needs. Thank you Jennifer.

Frankly, I thought it had a lot ofdark details that weren’t needed and certainly were not uplifting. Plus, as a book targeted to help single moms, you had to wade through half the book to get to practical help. To be honest, mine was the dissenting voice in our small single moms group. But I wouldn’t recommend it , nor would I have bought it had I known .

I was looking for something to help me understand the challenges single moms experience. In addition to a great explanation, the author offers hope and help through a national ministry she founded. Great resource!

This book was one of those that you just can't put down until you get through Jennifer's story. She moves pretty quickly, telling about her tumultuous childhood. Unbelievable what kids go through and, by God's grace, Jennifer turned out to be a wonderful productive human being who is helping others through the same struggles! She has a very compelling story to tell and also a helpful and insightful study at the end of the book.

Absolutely wonderful and timely for a soon top be single mom. Jennifer deftly addresses a lot of issues to be faced: emotional, financial, spiritual. .. from a perspective of someone who had experienced all the trials and rewards of single motherhood.

We are using it as a part of our single mothers' ministry. It is a great book. The author's honesty, humility, compassion, and biblical explanations are just what we needed. It has a workbook section!! I'm glad we found this book. I bought 4 copies for myself and the other women on the committee. We plan to buy a case for the mothers we will serve.

What a great book. Jennifer really has such a moving story. I truly could not stop reading. I finished it within 24 hours. While there is definately very valuable information in this book for single mothers, there is truly something in here for everyone. There are so many things that in this book that will help me in my day to day life as I grow as a Christian and as a parent. I would recommend this book to all of my friends and family. Can't wait to read more from Jennifer in the future!

Your book has open my eyes to the truth of what is really important in life and that is the love of the only one who can make you brand new.

This is a great read, fast paced with lots of action and a sympathetic, slightly goofy hero. What sets it apart from being just another adventure story though,is the brave tackling of the issue of the slave trade from West Africa. The book can be read on several levels, just simply as a rollicking story, or more seriously considering the big issue embedded within it. Its a book for teenage boys who will love the chase scenes and mysterious shadowy would-be-assassins. But it is also a book for class study with teenagers, with lots of teaching potential on a diversity of issues, such as loss of family, race, personal struggle etc as well as the big thorny one of slavery. Teenagers looking for a zippy read or teachers looking for a great book to work with in class, would be well advised to dip into this! The kids at our school really loved it!
