I use the research site GuruFocus almost daily. It’s my go-to source for fundamental stock research, and the screeners and graphing tools alone would be well worth the subscription cost. So, I was thrilled to find out that GuruFocus founder Charlie Tian, PhD recently authored a book, Invest Like a Guru: How To Generate Higher Returns At Reduced Risk With Value Investing.Tian doesn’t have a background in finance. He’s a scientist with a PhD in physics and an expert in fiber optics and lasers. Perhaps because of his unorthodox background Tian approaches the investing process in a scientific way, picking apart the strategies of successful investors to see how they work. Much of Invest Like a Guru – and GuruFocus too, for that matter – is focused on the strategies of wildly successful value investors such as Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch and Donald Yacktman. The dominant theme of the book is quality. Buffett famously said “It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price,” and Tian spends most of Invest Like a Guru expanding on that core idea. Chapter 6 is particularly useful as a 20-point checklist of criteria to look for when seeking out quality companies, including consistent profitability, capital efficiency and insider ownership. But while Invest Like a Guru is full of solid advice in what to look for in a stock, it’s far more useful in telling you what to avoid. As a case in point, Tian dedicates a chapter to deep-value investing, and I personally consider this the most important chapter in the book. I myself have gotten suckered into deep-value plays in the past, and they rarely seem to work out as planned or on the timeframe I had hoped.Deep-value investing is what Warren Buffett called “buying dollar bills for 40 cents” earlier in his career. Later, he mostly eschewed the strategy, calling it “cigar-butt” investing. The rationale is easy enough to understand: It’s hard to lose money buying a company that is worth more dead than alive. If a company’s net assets are worth significantly more than its current market price, management could sell off the company for spare parts and deliver a decent profit to shareholders. And generally, that would be the right move. Remember, if a stock is trading that cheaply, chances are good that it is a company with very deep problems. The problem is that it never quite works out that way. Monetizing assets is messy and complicated, and management has a vested interest in keeping the enterprise going. And the longer they do, the more value gets eroded. As a case in point, consider the case of Sears Holdings. Eddie Lampert and Bruce Berkowitz – both respected value investors – have effectively bet their careers on Sears in the belief that its real estate and brand portfolios represented massive untapped value. They problem is that the Sears retail business continues to deteriorate around them. They may eventually unlock the value they had hoped to, but it will have cost them dearly in money, reputational damage and – perhaps most importantly – opportunity cost. Had they focused their energies elsewhere, they might have made far better profits with far less headache.Buffett himself learned the same lesson with Berkshire Hathaway, which was a failing textile producer when Buffett originally bought it. Berkshire eventually failed, but only after Buffett had wasted untold time and energy (not to mention money) trying to keep it afloat. Buffett called his purchase of Berkshire Hathaway a “$100 billion mistake.”Tian finishes the chapter with the simple observation that “There are better ways to make money.”If you’re new to value investing, I highly recommend Invest Like a Guru. But even if you’re a seasoned investor, you’ll find plenty of insightful food for thought. My compliments to Tian on a solid addition to the value investor’s library.

I wish I had read this brilliant book ten years earlier! If I had, many of my investing mistakes during the past could have been avoided. As an amateur investor, I have explored quite a lot of books in the bookstore, including some of the best sellers. Dr. Charlie Tian’s book is like none of them. Although most of this book’s wisdom, principle, theory and practice are drawn from well-known investment gurus, Dr. Tian went many steps further to provide readers with a practical investment process, and as well as a holistic framework for value investing. In my opinion, Dr. Tian has quantified some important concepts in value investing, and use financial indicators to measure them, such as using constant high profit margin to measure a company’s economic moat, so the art part of the investing become more like science. You don’t need to have a Finance degree to understand this book’s key concepts. Adding humor to cut and dried materials, Dr. Tian effectively used many metaphors so even a high school student can relate and follow. Warrant Buffet’s wisdom is not out of reach any more.I think many readers will agree with me that the investing wisdom in this book can be applied to many areas of one’s life, for example, marriage, shopping, career, and entrepreneurship. So, the earlier you read this book, the more intelligent in general you will become. Two thumbs up!

You can learn the hard way or learn from other people's experiences. Instead of enrolling in the school of hard knocks, stand on the shoulders of investment giants and get a real investment education. Learn to think like an investment guru so your portfolio returns can be like them too. The more you learn (generally) the more you earn. Instead of buying Value Traps learn to stay clear of them. Dr. Charlie Tian has learned many valuable Value Investing lessons which he distills down in his wonderful book. I couldn't put it down and I finished it in a day. This is a quick read, but it's filled with a wealth of knowledge. Invest in your financial education and it will likely pay tremendous dividends. If you won't invest in yourself why should anyone invest in you. This book may be a stepping stone to help you "Invest like a Guru".

If you are new to investment world, you might find it useful. However you will get very limited new things from this book. In addition, the approach the author takes is very much financial statements driven, while he does not offer or pay attention to industry, company, products, strategy etc. The author constantly refers to his website. This is more like marketing material of his website promotion, less of a book about investment. Gurus do not simply and solely rely on numbers.

I've read a few investing books, and this is definitely one of the best.Very practical, to the point, and easy to understand. I agreed with lots of things Charlie mentioned in the book.I highly recommend it especially if you are a user of gurufocus.com.

Ridiculously fascinating book. She spends a great deal of time with one group of America's workers after the other ... coal miners, blueberry pickers, truck drivers, gun retailers, oil rig workers, landfill workers. No overt politics here. No finger pointing. But, oh my, how interesting it is to spend quality time with Americans who have chosen to-- primarily -- do work with a significant physical component. Loved meeting them. Wished many times to have been her and had her experiences. Read her book on Concussions before this and recognized there that she was a fine reporter. This is an earlier book well worth the read as we navigate our current dangerous political waters.

This book enlightens us as to who REALLY should have the kudos of this world! The "Hidden People" who bring our food and stuff to our lives - and with such sacrifice of their own lives. I will be forever grateful and will not miss a day of saying a Prayer of Thanks to those wonderful people! Thank you, Jeanne Laskas!! Wonderful, enlightening book! Out of the dark, into the light - just like the Coal Miners.

I found the book very interesting and educational. I will never understand why any author has to use the "f" word so very much. The book would have been just as readable, educational, and enjoyable, if not more so, without that word on almost every page. I taught history for years. This would be a good addition to high school curriculum, but I cannot recommend it because f the profanity in it.

One can't help but think that Jeanne Marie Laskas was influenced by Studs Terkel's "man on the street", working class interviews . Laskas certainly merits a comparison. The idea for HIDDEN AMERICA came from an article Laskas wrote for GQ about coal miners, and she includes them in her investigation. She also interviews migrant workers, NFL cheerleaders, air traffic controllers, gun dealers, red angus ranchers, Alaskan oil rig workers, a female truck driver, and land fill workers.Considering the constant danger, the coal miners were very funny. One of them wore size thirteen shoes; so his nickname became "Foot". They all had nicknames. It was also surprising how much money they made; they could earn up to $90,000 a year in a non-union mine. One of them was a college graduate who swore he'd never work in the mines, but the money was too good to pass up. Also, despite what the politicians say, coal is doing better than they ever have before, at least when Laskas wrote the book it was. For instance, 70% of China's factories draw their power from coal. The Cincinnati Ben-Gal cheerleaders were also surprising. Their numbers are drawn from some unique sources. One was a scientist; another was a construction worker. When asked why she tried out, the scientist said, "Who wouldn't want to be a Ben-Gal?" The construction worker was chosen cheerleader of the week and got her picture and bio put up on the scoreboard. She got so excited she overslept for the game and was replaced, but the director gave her another chance. So then, the motivation seems to be similar with all the girls. They're not there to trap a man; players aren't allowed near the girls; they just want to be somebody, if only for a little while.Perhaps the most charismatic character in the book was the female truck driver, nicknamed "Sputter." We're introduced to her as she's driving down the road trying to stay awake. Her solution is to go braless and to turn on the lights in the cab to show the other truckers. The landfill workers weren't what you'd expect either, nor was the landfill itself. Puente Hills Landfill, just outside Los Angeles pipes the methane out of the landfill to a generator that provides power for a middle-sized city. You'd also never know the place was a landfill if you didn't know it was there. The engineers built a verge with trees and flowers on the boundary to hide its existence. Civil engineer Joe Haworth has been around the landfill since its inception. He was one of those who came up with the idea to use the methane as a power source. He sees the landfill as a life lesson. Nature teaches us that everything is recycled. He doesn't really believe in God, but nature seems to imply that when we die, it's not the end. We are such things as stars are made of. In 2013, Puente Hills will close and Los Angeles' garbage will be hauled by rail into the desert; this will be more expensive, but even more of the garbage will be recycled.I guess what I learned from the book is that people tend to elevate their jobs. The migrant workers, for instance, wound up in Maine, raking blueberries. These are natural blueberries. The best. People from all over Maine used to help pick the berries when they were in season. They still hold Blueberry festivals, but, according to the migrant workers, most Americans are too lazy to pick them. They're missing out on something that would have connected them to their ancestors as well as other people of every stripe.Laskas will also throw in the occasional factoid. Despite what politicians and TV journalists say, the number of illegals entering the country is down. It's getting too hard for the migrant workers, over half of whom are illegal, to get back into the country, so they stay. Some haven't been home for years. And American growers wouldn't be able to harvest their crops without them.

That Jeanne Marie Laskas had a vision of writing about the subject of unusual and unusual vocations impressed me in the first place. Then to appreciate the research and time invested to follow these professions impressed me more. Ms. Laskas writing style is so enjoyable in this book that I was drawn into every chapter. The book made me remember to appreciate all of our special vocational talents.

I read this book in two days. It kept my interest at an all time high so I just kept on reading it until I reached the end, and then felt sorry there wasn't more to read. It's the story of the common people who make America run, rather than being a story about celebrities. It's also a very easy and interesting book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Interesting reading about the invisible workers and industries that the average American doesn't really know much about. The author is both enlightening and humorous in her accounting and images of these people and their jobs. It reads fast and is not terribly long. Would recommend it to anyone looking for light reading with some interesting information to be learned.

Very interesting read to learn about these different occupations and the people who work in them . I hope the author can write another book and profile other occupations

The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes

Review

"Valencius writes with creativity and purpose, weaving together history and science and interesting anecdotes ranging from a Davy Crockett hunting trip to the 'earthquake pig' that survived 36 days in the rubble of a 2008 quake in China. . . . By the time readers have finished the book, they should understand not only the New Madrid quakes but the larger process of understanding how we remember and contextualize important historical events." (William Lowry The Common Reader)"Provides not only a detailed account of the various peoples in the region of New Madrid and the effect of the earthquakes upon them, [but] also contemplates the history of knowledge of the event. . . . Valencius manages to recover vividly an emotional, somatic, and environmental moment." (Journal of Interdisciplinary History)“In an obscenely interesting new book, The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes, Valencius uncovers the quakes and their rich and various meanings—to increasingly diminished Native populations, who interpreted them as a sign to return to tradition in the face of colonial encroachment; to a young nation about to enter into another war with Great Britain, with some religious revivalists of its own; and to a burgeoning scientific community that still placed a premium on anecdotal evidence. . . . Valencius is an engaging, frequently funny storyteller.” (Sam Worley Chicago Reader)"Lively, comprehensive. . . . Valencius's examination of an array of early–nineteenth century earthquake experiences, thinkers, and theories are befitting of the sprawling geographical scope of the earthquakes." (Jonathan Hancock, Hendrix College Register of the Kentucky Historical Society)"Through her collections of vignettes, textual, and visual evidence, Valencius explains not only how the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes dramatically altered American history in the NMSZ, but also why the human experience and person records of physical phenomena are worthy of recognition and study by modern designers, engineers, and policy makers." (Earthquake Spectra)“How is it possible for a natural disaster to remake an entire region, physically and socially—and yet to be erased from history within two generations? In The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes Conevery Bolton Valencius tells a moving and mind-boggling tale of the production and destruction of natural knowledge. She follows the motley cast of amateurs who first tracked down the scientific evidence, as well as the modernizing forces that buried it once again. Her prodigious research reveals exactly how these earthquakes changed the course of history in the Mississippi Valley region. Remarkably, she shows that if we want to understand race relations in this part of the country in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we need to understand geology. This beautifully written book will stand as a model for integrating environmental and social history with the history of science.” (Deborah R. Coen, author of The Earthquake Observers)

This is a much more thorough account of not only the event of the New Madrid earthquakes in 1811 & 1812 than the book The Day the Mississippi Ran Backwards. I am fascinated with learning more about natural disasters which have occurred in the past. This book only gets 4 out of 5 stars because at least once it almost lost my interest but I kept reading anyway. I'm glad I did. This book gives a a really full picture of life in that area during that time period. The author comes forward through time to more recent times sharing the development of seismology but along the way the author tells why the New Madrid quakes were disregarded and nearly forgotten. I did enjoy this book and will likely read it again.

I thought the book was going to be a popular science, geology book, but it wasn't. There was some geology, but it was mostly a social history that drew many questionable conclusions. I read less than a quarter of it before putting it aside.

Instead of simply discussing the physical impact of this a catastrophic event, Valcencius embeds its consequences in the ethnic, religious, and economic milieu of the time. A great piece of investigative history, I heartily recommend it

I live about 80 miles from New Madrir, so I'm curious about the history of the region. This book is one of the best accounts I have found.

This book was not what I expected. I expected more on the science and less on personal accounts. The portion on native Americans was wy too long.

I liked it because I like history and this book gave the history of the New Madrid Earthquakes from several different perspectives. I especially liked the chapter on the earthquakes and how they were part of a religious revival.I did find one typo on page 114 "1895" is listed as a date for some of Tecumseh's activities and on the same page "1805" is listed as a date for some of his other activities. Page 112 has "1813" as the date of Tecumseh's death, so something seems to be out of sequence.Other than that, I liked the book and highly recommend it to other people interested in the history of the quakes. I guess I am especially interested in this topic because I live in North Little Rock, Arkansas, which will probably be decimated when the next New Madrid area earthquake(s) of the same magnitude occur.

This book is a seminal work. It is a comprehensive rendering of the events before, during and after the tragic New Madrid earthquakes which occurred in December, 1811 and January and February 1812. There were thousands of other, smaller quakes before and long after.I’m qualified to write this in praise of Professor Valencius because I’ve written extensively on the NMSZ (New Madrid Seismic Zone.) and served as a consultant to county disaster preparedness groups to aid in their compliance with state and federal readiness. Our home just happens to sit on the epicenter of the December 16th, 1811 quake, four miles south of the Missouri Bootheel.I’ve followed her down many of the same roads of research but she drilled much deeper than I did for I was only writing a novel. She has researched the only clues to what happened in taking most seriously the writings of the period be they understated or overblown. Her coloration of the people of the era is illuminating. The other twenty five percent of this work is most of the geology of these horrific events and is of equal interest. If you have no interest in the NMSZ or mid plate phenomena, this may not be your book.
