Amy R. Hurd, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at Illinois State University in Normal, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in leisure management and marketing. Hurd received her PhD in leisure behavior from Indiana University in 2001. Her research interests focus on management in parks and recreation with specific regard to management competencies. Hurd has worked in public-sector parks and recreation as a marketing director for the Champaign Park District in Champaign, Illinois. She has also served on the National Recreation and Park Association's American Park and Recreation Society board. In her free time, Hurd enjoys biking, kayaking, and hiking. She lives in Normal, Illinois.Robert J. Barcelona, PhD, is an assistant professor in the department of parks, recreation, and tourism management at Clemson University and teaches courses in the youth development leadership program.Barcelona received his doctorate from Indiana University after working professionally in the field of campus recreation, specifically in intramural sports and sport club administration. He has also worked with numerous recreation and sport organizations in both programming and research efforts. Barcelona's research centers on the management of leisure services, particularly recreational sport management and youth development. His interests lie in three areas: competencies and training needs of recreation professionals and volunteers, organizational partnerships, and community needs and participation patterns in sport and recreation. Barcelona is interested in research that bridges the gap between theory and practice, and he has been involved in efforts to enhance both academic and professional development in recreation and sport management. His research has been published in several refereed, professional journals, and he is the author of several book chapters related to recreation and sport management. Barcelona has presented locally, regionally, and nationally for associations such as the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, the North American Society for Sport Management, the Sport Marketing Association, and the National Recreation and Parks Association.John T. Meldrum, PhD, is an assistant professor in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Meldrum received his MBA in management (1995) from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada and his doctoral degree in recreation and leisure studies (2007) from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. His research centers on commitment in leisure service organizations, particularly seasonal or contingent employees and their impact on those organizations.Meldrum has worked in sport and recreation settings for over a decade. Before beginning his career in academia, he was the CEO of a nonprofit organization and a consultant to recreation agencies. He is a member of the National Park and Recreation Association and the Canadian Park and Recreation Association.Meldrum and his wife, Mary, live in Victoria. I've listened to Mr. Levin on the radio for years. He is so passionate and sincere in his beliefs on the radio, while ranting and raving, and yelling that I often wonder how he makes it through his show each night without having a heart attack or stroke. He sounds angry and bitter and upset......and he should.....he sees the country he loves going down the toilet and comments about it. One night he was talking about the things he has done in his life and he mentioned the books he wrote. This was one of the books he mentioned. I never heard of it before, and it was odd compared to the other books he had written. Being a dog lover and having a dog and being a fan of Mark's, I had to read it. When it came I couldn't put it down. My eyes were tearing up almost all the way through the book. I could relate to many, many of the things he wrote about. Many of the things he described my family and I experienced with our dogs. Several times while reading the book, I had to put the book down, wipe away my tears, and take a break before I could continue reading on. For years I had listened to Mr. Levin ranting and raving on the radio like an angry mad man. I never knew this other side of him existed. This is an outstanding book that any dog lover will cherish. When our current dog passes away, I plan on doing what Mr. Levin did to immortalize Sprite. ( You'll have to read the book to find out what....and I don't mean writing a book. ) I never realized before how many people are affected by one persons pet. This is a great book on so many different levels.Thank you, Mr. Levin for this wonderful, insightful book.

We had to euthanize our beloved miniature schnauzer, Lucy, this morning. She was 14 and a half. She had diabetes, one blind eye and she was mostly deaf. She was our baby and a lot of our lives were spent caring for her. When she was seven weeks old, I gave her to my then-boyfriend, now husband, for a 52nd birthday present. I put her in a computer printer/fax machine box, pretending it was heavy, and presented it to him in front of his kids and mine. He was so surprised to see that sweet little face looking up at him. Lucy cooperated miraculously by remaining perfectly silent.Honestly, I am beside myself with grief. I remembered that people took solace from Mark Levin's book, "Rescuing Sprite," but I couldn't imagine how it could help. I was going to read the reviews to try to understand just how it could help. Instead I just bought the kindle edition and immediately started reading it.It is beautifully written, and before long I was immersed in Mark's story of family and beloved and extraordinary pets. After a while I realized that I wasn't dwelling on the loss of Lucy, if for just a little while. It is helpful to know that others have had the same feelings I am now experiencing. I must now grapple with Life Without Lucy after the many years of loving our dear, sweet girl. It will require learning ways to duck the pain and to just put one foot in front of the other, focusing on moving forward, while honoring my memory of Lucy.

I recently lost one of my best friends; a black and white husky mix we called Panda. Her illness was sudden and devastating. In the space of a few hours I had to make the decision to put her down. Holding her in my arms while the drugs were administered was one of the most tormented things I have ever had to do. I felt disconnected afterwards wondering to myself why the pain and depression were so powerful. After having read Mark's book I realize that perhaps what I experienced is more common than I could have believed. My own emotions were captured here in Sprite's story. I have long admired Mark Levin as a wise and entertaining teacher. Though we will never meet, I recognize him as a brother and friend. Support your local animal shelter and rescue organizations. Put puppy mills out of business. Thousands of unwanted pets are put to death, unwanted every single day. Perhaps not the next one you meet...

I had to put our Sheba to sleep on October 6, 2018. My little Sheba was a Pit bull full of love, who liked to have her tummy rubbed. Loved pizza crust, car rides & sit next to me on the sofa & watch tv. We discovered a tumor a week ago & then more tumors on a follow up visit. Sheba saw my 2 youngest son from elementary thru college. 11 years in our family, my sons friends loved her & all are devastated my her loss. She brought us thru some hard times in our lives. I thank God for her. Yesterday morning after putting her to sleep, I knew that the book that Mark wrote about his dog Sprite, would help me deal with deep pain. I read the book all day, cried. It helped to see that my family & I were not the only one, that felt anguish about putting our family member to sleep. Thank you Sprite, Mark & his family. Mark I’m so glad your wrote this book, it’s a healer for dog lovers who have lost their dog. I’m going to order the paperback & another kindle versions for my sons.

Mark R. Levin loves dogs, loves the loyalty and devotion given by dogs. He has adopted dogs, he and I came from essentially the same area of Phila.,PA. We are not talking about adopting pure-bred dogs, our dogs had the five letter title of "Mutts." As we came up in life, so did the dogs we adopted. They were strays, but survivors. They really appreciated love and security, once rescued. And, they returned love, devotion, and loyalty many times over....which is what these animals are all about. "Man's Best Friend" is the title they have well-earned.Get Mark's book, it was written with love and respect for a dog he adopted.

There were tears, chuckles, and out-loud laughter. The writing was splendid. Everybody who must put a pet down should read it. I still think about the emotions that accompany his dying pet. I have cats, but the emotions cross-over from dogs. I love levin's writing. He has written several books and I have read all of them. This is a heart-breaker. I wish I had known Sprite.
