U.S. Presidents The Highest Office in the Land After winning the Revolutionary War, General George Washington probably could have had anything he wanted. Some of his army officers suggested he should be crowned king. If Washington had agreed to be king, and the crown had been passed down to his heirs, do you know who would be running America today? Paul Emery Washington, of San Antonio, Texas, retired regional manager of a building-supply company! Luckily, Washington didn’t want to be king, and instead, in 1789, he was elected and sworn in as the first president of the United States. For the last 225 years, instead of “His Majesty,” we’ve referred to our head of state as just plain “Mr. President.” (And maybe, someday soon, “Madam President.”) MAYBE THIS SHOULD BE THE HANSON MONUMENT IN HANSON, D.C. Strictly speaking, Washington wasn’t the first American president—he was the ninth! Before the Constitution was ratified, eight different men presided over the Continental Congress. If you count these guys, America’s real first president was a Maryland tobacco planter named John Hanson. But even though the United States is a democracy, the president still gets plenty of pomp and ceremony. In this chapter, we’ll take a look at some of the traditions and trappings that have grown up over the centuries around the highest office in the land. Big Bird The bald eagle on the official presidential seal holds both a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, to symbolize the president’s leadership in war and peace. Many people believe that the eagle is redrawn to face the arrows during times of war, but you should know better, Junior Geniuses. That’s just a myth. The seal has lots of hidden thirteens, to symbolize the thirteen original states of the union. If you watch the president on TV, you’ll see the seal printed everywhere he goes. The Mars candy company even puts the seal on special presidential boxes of M&M’s, available only at the White House and on Air Force One. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue George Washington never lived in the White House! It took ten years to build the city now named for him, so Washington governed from executive mansions in New York and Philadelphia instead. John Adams moved into the White House in November 1800 as its paint was still drying. Not a single room was completed, and the First Family used the large East Room, where ceremonies and receptions are held today, to hang their laundry. The day after moving in, Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail:“I Pray Heaven to Bestow the Best of Blessings on This House and All that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under this Roof!”Today these words appear above the fireplace in the White House State Dining Room. The Adams family even had to use an outhouse, as the White House had no indoor bathrooms or running water! But don’t worry about the president today having to run out to the Rose Garden in the middle of the night when he feels the call of nature. Since 1800, the mansion has been renovated many times with all the latest conveniences: Extra Credit Even before he got into hot water, Richard Nixon wasn’t much of a swimmer. In 1969, he ordered FDR’s pool covered up to expand the White House pressroom. His successor, Gerald Ford, promptly had a new outdoor pool dug in the South Lawn.Today the White House has 6 levels, 132 rooms, 28 fireplaces, 147 windows, 35 bathrooms, a bowling alley, and a movie theater. Even with all that space, things can get crowded. President James Buchanan used to invite over so many houseguests that he once wound up sleeping on the floor in a hallway! All that luxury isn’t free, however. Every president gets a monthly bill from the White House and is expected to pay all his family’s costs, everything from groceries to toiletries to dry cleaning. And the staff says that new presidents always complain about the cost! All About the Washingtons George Washington, one of the richest Americans of his time, thought that the president shouldn’t get paid at all, but instead just have his expenses reimbursed. Congress disagreed, and voted a $25,000 salary for the president. At the time, that was 2 percent of the national budget—the equivalent of $76 billion today! Today’s presidential salary: $400,000 a year. Not bad, for government work. The Earpiece Corps When you see Secret Service agents on TV talking into their sleeves (actually a small microphone on their wrists) what are they saying? Often they use code words, like “POTUS” (President of the United States) and “FLOTUS” (First Lady of the United States). All modern presidents have had their own individual code names as well. Here’s a top secret look behind the sunglasses. TOP SECRET   PRESIDENT FIRST LADY CHILDREN Kennedy Lancer Lace Lyric and Lark Johnson Volunteer Victoria Velvet and Venus Nixon Searchlight Starlight Sugarfoot and Sunbonnet Ford Passkey Pinafore Professor, Packman, Panda Carter Deacon Dancer Derby, Deckhand, Diamond, Dynamo Reagan Rawhide Rainbow Rhyme, Riddler, Ribbon, Reliant Bush 41 Timberwolf Tranquility Trailblazer, Tripper, Trapline, Tuner Clinton Eagle Evergreen Energy Bush 43 Trailblazer Tempo Turquoise and Twinkle Obama Renegade Renaissance Radiance and RosebudIn an epic example of bad timing, Abraham Lincoln signed the law that created the Secret Service on April 14, 1865—the same day he was shot. But the Secret Service was actually formed as a branch of the Department of the Treasury, mostly to fight counterfeiting. They didn’t take on their most famous duty—protecting the president and other VIPs—until after the McKinley assassination in 1901. Back then, security wasn’t such a big deal. Calvin Coolidge used to enjoy giving his security detail the slip and going for walks by himself out on F Street. But today, the president receives more than thirty death threats every day, so his protection has to be airtight. Every president back to Reagan has had an official food tester who tastes every dish served, to make sure it’s not poisoned. (If the food tester isn’t there, POTUS can’t eat lunch.) In 2007, Austrian newspapers even reported that during a state visit to Vienna, President Bush used a special toilet that collected his waste. The toilet was flown back to the U.S., making sure that no poop was left behind! The president often wears bulletproof protection under his suit, and his car is equipped with smoke grenades, tear gas, its own oxygen supply, a firefighting system, and a blood bank in the trunk equipped with the president’s blood type. Road Trip Nowadays, the president can’t just hop on his horse and ride to church alone, the way Lincoln did. When POTUS goes anywhere today, it’s a pretty big project. Here’s what his motorcade looks like. Many presidents grow to have close relationships with their security. • EISENHOWER, who loved to golf, got tired of squirrels tearing up the White House putting green, so he tasked his Secret Service with drawing up a countermeasure called Operation Squirrel Seduction. • RONALD REAGAN, in retirement and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, loved to spend his days skimming leaves off his pool. He didn’t know his agents were carefully replacing all the leaves, so he’d always have some to remove! • BEST OF ALL, GERALD FORD used to blame the Secret Service whenever he passed gas—which was often. “Did you do that?” he would ask loudly. “Show some class!” His agents must not have minded. One of them even wound up marrying his daughter, Susan! Prank of America All this security doesn’t always work perfectly. In 2007, an Icelandic high school student named Vifill Atlason phoned the White House pretending to be the president of Iceland, and managed to schedule a meeting with President Bush before his hoax was discovered! Frequent Flier In 1945, Franklin Roosevelt became the first commander in chief ever to travel in a special presidential airplane, when he flew to the Soviet Union to attend the Yalta Conference in a plane called the Sacred Cow. Today, any plane with the president on board gets a cooler call sign: Air Force One. There are currently two Boeing 747s in the president’s fleet. These are no ordinary passenger jets—they each have lots of special accommodations for the president, including a workout room, a five-chef galley that can serve two thousand meals, and a mini-hospital. The planes can also be refueled in midair, so the president can keep flying indefinitely in case of a national emergency. He’d never be out of touch with Washington, since each plane has state-of-the-art communication equipment, including 85 phones and 19 televisions. In total, its instruments use 238 miles of wiring. Air Force One is even specially shielded to withstand a nuclear strike! Pop Quiz! Near the end of his second term, James Madison burned out on Washington and spent four full months just chilling at his Virginia estate. What’s the modern name for the president’s private retreat, which was called Shangri-La until President Eisenhower renamed it in 1953 after his grandson? To-Do List Some presidential traditions happen every year. Here’s a helpful calendar, in case you’re ever elected. (Not for a few more years, though. The Constitution says the president has to be at least thirty-five.) The State of the Union Address The Constitution says that the president “shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union.” Thomas Jefferson hated public speaking (some historians think he might have had a stutter), so he used to just write Congress a letter. But ever since Woodrow Wilson, presidents have given their annual update as a speech to a joint session of Congress. Every year, the whole Cabinet attends the speech—except for one “designated survivor,” who is taken to a secret location. That way, if there’s some emergency, at least one person in line to succeed to the presidency is still safe.

Another great book in the Junior Genius series. Our 10-year-old loves all of Ken Jennings' books in this series. They are well written, engaging, and full of interesting facts.

Educational and entertaining! Just like Ken!

despite the fact that ken jennings is a seahawks fan, this is a great book

Our kids love these! Every Jennings' Junior Genius Guide we've purchased has been excellent.

The book is filled with interesting presidential trivia and my grandson (11) seems to be enjoying it.

My 10 year old has already read it through since the delivery guy dropped it off this afternoon. He giggled all the way through. It is full of funny facts about the Presidents and laws. Keep them coming Ken!

Grandson enjoys reading these

This book is filled with trivia stated in a way that keeps you coming back for more. Every turn of the page brings some facts that I had never heard before. I was sorry when I finished the book. Fortunately, for me, I have three more of Ken's books to keep me off the streets at night. This would be a good book for kids who would rather text than read. This book will hold the reader's interest.

#29,309 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

There is a sense of deja vu in all of Amish's writing - a sense that you have already read what has been written. I would not recommend this book to people who are looking for the pacy, fluid narration of a mythological story of one of the original super heroes of the world. It may be a good read for young children to whom one wants to introduce the world of Indian mythology in a manner of contemporary writing. But here too, Amish falls short of expectations because the connect between accepted notions of the events in Ram's life, and what is written - is absent. All in all - I would not miss not reading this book. A tragedy, because the earlier series had potential.

The book was a good read as such but Amish could have avoided modifying historical events only for the purpose of creating an impact. For instance, replacing the plot of Sita’s Swayamvara with Arjun’s feat of shooting the Fish’s eye in Mahabharata was totally not needed. Even if he had stuck to the original plot of Ram breaking the bow, it won’t have made the story any less interesting. On the contrary, it might have made it better. One of the best things about Amish’s Shiva trilogy was that he had explained otherwise complicated and mythological events quite rationally without modifying key events from ancient history. I found that brilliance missing in this book.

When you grow up in India, one will hear many versions of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Personally, I have read Kamba Ramayanam and detailed version by C.S. Rajagopalachari. Amish's version of Ramayan might come as shock to those who have not read the Shiva trilogy before. With strong characters, main concept of human beings elevated by their actions to a "Mahadev" or "Vishnu" (continued from Shiva Trilogy), and portraying women as warriors (including Sita, & Parvathi), it is quiet different from usual stories that I heard growing up. I personally like the interactions of Ram with his Guru Vashista and later with Guru Vishwamitra, where they debate different forms of governance, merits and pitfalls of each. Cannot help myself, comparing Democrats vs. Republicans, very apt descriptions for each. A must read for every Indian.

Amish is great in articulating the story, and this is no exception. I, however felt there was too much fixation few things such as Lakshman's body build, etc (don't want to disclose for future readers) , also I think the writer should have taken the liberty to deviate from the base story line to make it intriguing. Plots where it has been taken like that of Roshni's, it looks to be same as some 90's bollywood plot. Also discussions on dharma I thought could have either referred the upnishad directly or be in form of some story rather than discussion. Also the incidents where Ram actually achieved the glory and public love is covered in a page or two.All in all a good read, but certainly Amish can do much better.

As always, Amish has done a brilliant job in explaining the beautiful intricacies of the ancient world by logically explaining why Ram and Sita did what they did.Its an amazing journey for anyone reading with a calm mind without taking in any offense. Although at some times, it feels like Amish is trying to force the current world views to try and logically explain certain parts, they are definitely vindicated by the fact that he is only interpreting his version of ramayana. For all we know, Valmiki was only an author who interpreted his version of the true story to us.It is a piece of literary art and can be considered puttng up as our version of Ramayana instead of the old one.

The book was quite engaging , so much so that I was shocked when it ended. I kept waiting for that "something" to happen but it never did.As is his style, the author has his own version of how and why the events transpired, which in places was beautifully executed. However I also felt that in the process some important events like the actual swayamwar ceremony were undermined. While the bond between the brothers was built upon well but the same cannot be said for Ram-Sita.All in all, a mixed bag, but a good read !

All of his books are simply sensational. You just cant get over it even though you have completed it reading. This book had made me fall in love with the characters I considered fictional. Amazing writing Amish. May you books serve a purpose to the society to inculcate values from instead of diluted philosophical religious books that hardly made any sense. Like in my previous review on your books I am telling you again, I am definitely making the movies on these...

I have read Shiva Triology so I have to compare the two. In both, Amish has humanize Hindu Gods, and in doing so he has taken lots of liberty. Most hindus are aware that Satyug is followed by tretayug ( Ramayana era) and Dwapar ( Krishna Era), however we have been told that Dwarika is many millennium before Rama time while Prince bhagirath is chandravanshi many millennium after Ram( Bhagirath was suryavanshi and Rams ancestor). There are lots of mistakes like that. Moreover all non human characters like Jatayu to Ganesh and Hanuman are deformed humans ( Nagas). However these are interesting reads, though Shiva Triology is much better written than this. Here author has tried to emphasize on philosophy esp in the beginning which seems to inspire by modern day India( on rape juvenile laws etc.) its ok to read once, not as good as Triology.

Smartest book I have read in a long time. Valerie has a great way to explain and relate to the audience. It is obvious that Valerie McGilvrey is in the business. These secrets can be used in many areas outside of skip tracing. I enjoyed the book and the way the writer presented it. Highly recommend.

Not a bad book, but I didn't find much information in it that was very secret either. Overall, not disappointed I bought it, but wasn't as good as I'd hoped either.

It was helpful, but it was mostly about how to repossess cars using skip tracing. I would have liked more information on other kinds of skip tracing.

This book is good for someone who may be new to searching but I’d pass on it if you’re advanced. Good basic information though

I never knew what skip tracing was until I read this book. The first chapter explains what a skip tracer is in detail before going into details on how to become one yourself, which is very useful. The author explains very well how to locate debtors without harassing them and on how to stay within the confines of hte law. Useful resources on that you can use which are free or low cost are also presented. I also like her personal stories. The book is well-organized as the author separates the various tips into chapters: using social media, military records, free databases, etc. to locate debtors. She even covers how to get started and possible licensing you might need if you want to start your own skip tracing business. A good and informative book if you are looking into this career. highly rec recommend.

Book arrived on time, in excellent condition!

Great

What we say to each other and how we say it conditions how people respond to each other. Frank Luntz' book is an easy to read "textbook" on how to achieve your personal goals using "words that work." I have always believed that using negative words, such as "regret" or "problem," should be avoided. But Luntz tells us not only what words or phrases to use but why. This book should be a textbook used in a course offered in any communications curriculum.

I'll agree with the other reviewers. The book doesn't know who their audience. Every chapter read like the readers needed help running their own campaign. And the book is clearly advertising for every day use. The author used marketing tactics on unsuspecting customers. Unless you want this for political reasons, skip this book.

lt's a good book. lt certainly has a few very good points. However, l find its message to be repetitive. l have the feeling you could say in one chapter what the author conveyed in many (yes, he should've stick to some of his own rules: be brief, etc.) :-))lt will raise your awareness on the need to calculate which words to use and how to convey them. Also, l found it reads easily for the most part.

I must confess that I had never heard of Dr. Frank Luntz until I sat through his presentation at a large conference. In a word, he was excellent, even electric, as he roamed through the large audience, speaking without notes, and engaging each person along the way. His message was clear - focus more on the message you need your audience to hear - and how you can be understood, and less on oratorio, lofty rhetoric and messages that can be easily missed or misunderstood.Good message. Luntz is clearly someone who follows his own advice. And, if his subliminal message to the attendees was, "If you are enjoying this, buy my book ...", he clearly succeeded with me - I ordered it during the conference. Here is a bit of criticism. Hearing Luntz talking about identifying the appropriate words that work is more enjoyable than reading about it. But, it's not that his writing style is bad - it's just that he is so strong verbally that I think I held him to a higher standard. Actually, he imbeds humor, questions and "conversations" with the reader that make the pages flow. And, a lot of good old common sense too. Had I not seen him in action, I would not have made this observation.I know there is some question between the difference between words that communicate vs. words that manipulate. There is a definite fine line here, particularly within the political arena, of which much of this book is devoted. Still, one earlier reviewer ascribed this to the more broadly defined "words that persuade," and I think this is fair.Beyond all the stories, case studies and personal experiences involving products and products (the majority of the book), however, there is a primer in communication skill development for the reader. He tells readers which words work within their daily lives, be they needed to avoid a speeding ticket, negotiate with a spouse, or make the big presentation to the boss (followed by a forward looking request for a raise). In other words, I found that Luntz' book was much more than "words that work," it was about helping perceptive readers to become "people that work [more effectively, productively, successfully]."Let me end by asking interested readers how they might approach their next big presentation. After reading this book, they are far more likely to begin with, "Imagine a working environment in which everyone spoke so simply, so clearly, so credibly, so consistently, so aspirationally," that everyone knew what they were supposed to do, and why and when ..."Much more powerful. This book reflects the popular culture. The examples are real and current. It is brain food for people who choose to improve by thinking about and using words that people hear. Highly recommended.

The book is valuable, and should be purchased in conjunction with George Lakoff's works. Lakoff and Luntz are like Yin and Yang of a much broader puzzle, the political and moral implications of the language we use, and the persuasive and behavioral modification properties inherent in our language. If is important to read these books not because you want to persuade and influence others; it is important to read Luntz's Words that Work, and other books like Lakoff's if you want to know and understand the ways in which others may be trying to persuade *you*.The greatest disservice to the general public has been denying it an education in rhetoric, without which we are far more susceptible to its abuses, and unable to responsibly use it to aid us and our communities.Read Words that Work and see what sort of rhetorical appeals are made of you, and how you can better command and lead your own fortunes, and choose the influences to want to listen to, or not.

I make my living with words. So most of what I read here I already knew. Having said that, it was a good refresher course. The book deals mostly with words in politics. But it also discusses slogans and words used in business. Is the book about manipulating? Sure it is. But, fact is, any time you use words to sell an idea or a product, you're manipulating --- or at least trying to do so. A better word would be "persuasion."As the author says, "It's not what you say that matters. It's what people hear." And that's true. It never fails to amaze me how easily people misread what they're told or what they hear or read. Why? People don't really listen. People are thinking their private thoughts. They are thinking what they'll say next. They're not listening to you. So they're hearing sound bites. The communicator who uses small words and short sentences and the right words will be able to get these folks to take the action they want them to take.If you communicate to convince others, you should read this book. It's not the best written book I've read. It's not the best book on this topic. It's not a great book. And there are errors. Errors in wording and errors in fact. For example, the author says that people do not buy things from long gone decades. They prefer items of today. Well, that's not really true. There is a large market in fountain pens from the twenties, thirties and into the sixties. I know. I collect them. The market for Parker 51 pens from the forties is keen. So I don't buy that statement. But the book is a decent read. It will help anyone who needs words and needs to persuade people.

Pretty good book. It is for people with little or no java experience. Found several typos and code errors that I didn't find any documentation for!P.S. The source code IS available for download at [...]

I took out one star is beacause the part on setting up Apache tomcat, Java SDK and other software in Linux is vaque. On the whole it is a book. It shows you many examples and most importantly the book explain the examples in great details.I would recommend this book to people who has knowledge in aleast one programming language.

Book was in very good condition and its almost like new and shipped very fast. Was happy with shipping time and book condition.

The book says that the source code can be downloaded from wrox.com. But that is not true. The book does not have a CD, and the source is not wrox.com. I have not had any luck with the forums or support at Wrox Without the source code, this book is not worth the price, or the time.
