An excellent guide to defensive preparedness, and just about the only source available. The author documents the almost non-existent Federal civil defense in existence, thus the need for private initiative. He also counters the prevailing myths of the futility of survival in a nuclear attack or that all of mankind would be destroyed. These two myths have been perpetrated by the enemies of America who wish to demoralize us and produce acquiescence to their demands. Russia, on the other hand, has massive civil defense structures and training in place and plans to not only survive, but win, a nuclear contest.On the con side, much of the information is dated, especially when it comes to radiation detection devices. Also, the author does go into detail aboutfleeing an area but makes two assumptions. First, he assumes that roads will be passable. This is only true if someone is fleeing before mass public evacuation. I've been through several evacuations in the USA due to impending weather and the roads became immediately blogged and non-passable. AWD were not able to move either. Only two wheel vehicles and travel by foot were possible. The author does not mention alternatives to 4 wheel vehicles. The second assumption he makes is that the populace will be orderly, helpful, and compliant. This also does not tally with my experiences. In the lists of emergency supplies, firearms are never even mentioned. The author apparently sees no need for weapons.Still, overall this is a valuable resource and if I had to make a list of the five most useful preparedness books, this would be on that list.

4 stars for writing style and overall organization of content. However, 5 stars for importance of information. It would be nice if references to scientific studies were given more formally. Even so, the info appears to be authoritative, based on actual empirical data from government laboratories. I've not yet finished the book, but I've learned quite a lot so far. The best thing I can say to recommend this book is that it dispels many myths about the survivability of a nuclear attack and what must be done to survive it.The real reason I rated this book 4 stars is that it is in serious need of an update. It is based on (large scale) nuclear threats from the Soviet Union in 1987. However, in today's world, we also face significant threats from small powers like North Korea. Because of their limited nuclear capabilities, they cannot utilize the same sorts of strategies the Soviet Union would have employed against us. Although I can make educated guesses how North Korea might attack us, it would be useful to have some clarity from people who have studied the issue more deeply than I.Finally, I'll mention that this book is mostly intended to aid people who have not made elaborate advance preparations. If you want to learn how to spend 36 hr digging an "expedient" fallout shelter in your back yard when geopolitical events start getting crazy and an attack is believed to be eminent, this book is definitely for you. If you want guidance on how to build a permanent fallout shelter out of reinforced concrete, you will need additional guidance from other books. (This book addresses permanent shelters, but that is not its main focus. Note: FEMA has published guides for permanent shelters that apparently lack adequate shielding and have not been tested, unlike the "expedient" temporary shelters discussed in this book.)

If you have any fears that this might possibly happen, this is the one book that you absolutely must have! It teaches you how to build a shelter, how to make an accurate radiation detector from material that you can find in your own home, how to build a high volume air pump from commonly available materials (an absolute necessity in hot weather),: basically every thing that you need to know to protect yourself and your family.

Tons of great first hand information in this book, but an extremely hard book to read. First time I read the book years ago, I skimmed it because it was so boring. But when things were getting hot with NK I decided to read it again. I have read quite a few science books, some of which seemed to have been written on dust with sleeping potion, but this book is an even more potent sleeping aid. It was worth keeping my eyes open since this book has a wealth of first hand information on the subject. Most of the shelters described are temporary since untreated wood doesn't last long underground. Since most of the shelters would have to be built just before needed to remain useable, they are impractical. The in house emergency shelters are of limited usefulness due to their small shielding effects., but something is better than nothing. The concrete underground shelters are the only real choice but are far too expensive for the average person to construct. I found the information very informative once I managed to actually read the book. However, I find I can't make use of it due to how much it would cost and the space required. I do recommend reading this book and others on nuclear war, since it is something you may have to deal with and the information in this book could literally save your life. But read it with a grain of salt since the author is totally self deluded on the average American being able to survive a nuclear attack when it seems most couldn't survive if Wal-Mart was destroyed.

Older information but still useful. I ordered this to have in my SHTF reference library. If you do any prepping, you should have a copy of this book. It's the classic work that came out near the end of the cold war Era but not much has changed. Things are heating up again so I figured it might be good to have. There are versions available for download free, but if stuff goes south your electronic devices aren't going to work anyway. Better to have a hard copy.

Geza Vermes is one of the foremost scroll scholars. His work includes complete translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls, countless articles and monographs, and several books dealing with the Dead Sea Scrolls both in terms of history, translation, and interpretation. An emeritus professor of Oxford University, he wrote this recent book after half a century had passed since the first scrolls were discovered.In the first chapter, Vermes traces the history of discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, starting with the caves near Qumran and expanding from there to incorporate a few other finds and sites. In all, eleven caves were discovered in the first decades of scroll exploration. There were major scrolls and minor fragments found in these caves, particularly cave 4; there are over 800 titled scrolls and scroll fragments, over 550 of which come from cave 4 alone.The scrolls themselves have been dated to as early as 200 BCE and as late as 70 CE, with a very few fragments going even further back, or going forward into the next century. The dating and authentication of the scrolls has created a new discipline, according to Vermes - codicology. The texts have added significantly to knowledge about the Bible and the Pseudepigrapha, those works not contained in the official canon but which relate to scripture or scriptural stories. Vermes contends that the actual contribution of the scrolls to Jewish history is negligible, a sense not always shared by other scholars. That the scrolls are historic is not at issue, however.Vermes traces the patterns of different interpretations of the scrolls, including the `official' line of Qumrani origins, the Groningen hypothesis that discusses a theorised series of Wicked Priests, the Zealot theory, theories that link the scrolls to earliest Christian sects (including Barbara Thiering's hypothesis about the contentions between Jesus and John the Baptist, or Eisenman's idea of tensions between James and Paul, variously identifying them as Wicked Priests or Teachers of Righteousness). He includes Norman Golb's latest theories also - in all of this, it shows the wide diversity of views about the scrolls from start to finish.Vermes does a literature survey of the scrolls, highlighting the primary categories of finds in the scrolls. The first is called `Rules of Community' - a good portion of the scrolls seem to deal with a monastic or communal rule, possibly for the community that lived at Qumran. There are poetic and liturgical texts, possible hymn texts and prayers that were recited at the monastic community. There are `Wisdom' texts, most akin to proverbs and sayings. There are Biblical texts (every book of the Hebrew canon save Esther) and interpretations, as well as texts of apocryphal works. Finally, there are documents that resist easy classification, which includes the famous and enigmatic Copper Scroll. Vermes addresses the issue of the Damascus Document here (not found in Damascus, but rather in a Cairo genizah, an attic for documents, that was found much earlier, but later linked to the same scrolls).Vermes devotes several chapters to looking at the dominant theories about the community that lived at Qumran. He addresses the issues of identity in terms of who the Sadducees, the Pharisees, the Zealots and the Essenes were, and their likely relationship, if any, to the community at Qumran. He does a brief survey of Jewish history often termed inter-testamental (the time between the completion of the Hebrew canonical texts and early Christian era), focusing mostly in the end on the history of the Essenes, perhaps the least known of Jewish groupings at the time. Expanding upon this survey of the historical identity, Vermes also gives a development of the Religious identity of the Essene community, taken from a distillation of the information from the Rules, the interpretations, and the liturgical works primarily.For many lay persons, the Dead Sea Scrolls are important for the light they shed on the canonical scriptures of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and, possibly, the New Testament. In the final chapter to this text, Vermes looks at the connection of the scrolls and scholarship about the scrolls with the wider field of biblical study and interpretation. In developing the influence on Hebrew scripture study, Vermes discusses the situation prior to the advent of the scrolls in addition to the issues now arising because of the availability of the scrolls - what authority is given to textual variations that are found in the scrolls versus modern texts of the Bible?With regard to the Pseudepigrapha and the New Testament, the situation is different. For much of the extra books in the Pseudipigrapha, not only were there no ancient Hebrew texts remaining, but it was sometimes speculated that some (such as Jubilees) were not even originally Hebrew, but rather in Greek. Issues like this have now been settled, but other issues have arisen, including the authority given these texts prior to Rabbinic Judaism and Christianity.With regard to the New Testament, despite a great volume of scholarship, the connections are far more tenuous. Given that there are no direct evidence pieces of scrolls with the New Testament, speculation and conjecture rules the day. The ideas of early Christian life and community often parallels the development of some scholars' ideas of community life among the Essenes, and this causes excitement. However, Vermes prefers to see this less as an identification, and more of a confirmation of the type of Jewish world in which Jesus and early Christianity arose.Vermes includes a catalogue of the scrolls, by title and point of origin, a general index and an index of modern authors. There is a bibliography, divided by major topics, near the front of the book. This is the third edition of the book; originally published in 1977, it went through two revisions as scroll scholarship and lore proceeded at an ever-quickening pace. I could not put this book down! I bought the book thinking it was like where's Waldo, but finding Karl. Instead,I found myself having more fun finding all the other hidden celebs along the way! This book is awesome. I love the eccentricities of Karl Lagerfeld. I put this on my coffee table and anyone who has picked up won't put it down until they've found Karl in each scene.

This is more than a coffee table book, it is a book of mini adventure as you try to find the elusive Kaiser amongst the sea of celebrities. As your eyes roam across the pages, you can be easily sidetracked by the other famous faces in this book. Once you start your search, it may be hard to put this book down. The writing is also worth the read. You will not be bored with this one!

Was a gift for a "fashion" friend who absolutely loved it - great coffee table book and fun for adults who are nostalgic for Where's Waldo so they can enjoy it with more modern cultural references.

This book is based on the premise that each of us has an imaginary bucket that can be filled or emptied by the behavior or actions of the people around us. The message is that we should all strive to act in ways that fill another person's bucket, as opposed to emptying his/her bucket.BUT...on the flip side, the book also shows the effects of behavior on people, and I wish it had another message, like "Even if someone does something that would empty your bucket, don't let them empty your bucket!"Shouldn't we teach children how to not get affected by the behavior around them, whether positive or negative? In other words, if we can teach our children to not become dependent on praise or internalize negative behavior, they'll be well-balanced individuals. You can't control what other people do. Everyone would have to read this book and follow the positive behavior recommended by the book. Well, kid, that's not how the world works.How about teaching our children that their happiness is dependent on themselves - doing the "right thing", making socially beneficial choices, taking good care of their mental and physical health, enjoying every little aspect of life, including the downturns, which is part of being alive! - how about that?Luckily, I read the book before reading it to my 4 year old. I think the author has good intentions, but I don't agree with his one-sided approach. I wish there was a book that addressed treating other people kindly, but also not getting affected by another person's actions.

I didn't notice the author was different than the original Fill a Bucket books and this is a total knock off. The story doesn't flow or explain the idea of bucket filling in an enjoyable or impactful day. It just has stuff happening to a kid and the word drip or drop next to each bucket at the event. It is the last few pages were it even aorta explains the idea of bucket fillingSuper bummed, because it wasn't a cheap book. Definitely not worth the money or the space on a bookshelf

This book was different from what I expected because I thought this was like Tom's other book that I had just purchased (The Rechargeables), but it is so much more. It is about how negative experiences take from your bucket and positive experiences fill them up. When my 7 year old son read this we now talk about his day in terms of how full is his bucket. What things took away (negative experiences) from his day and what things (positive experiences) added to his day.

Ever since the purchase of this book we reference it on a daily basis. We have a VERY strong willed, and independent 4.5 year old. I wasn’t sure how much of the book he would understand but my gosh he does! We talk about filling others buckets in school, family etc. and just this past week he said something to me, stopped and said “is that bucket dipping” (he was saying a few mean things). I said yes, talked about it and he apologized. GASP. My 4.5 year old recognized and apologized for his behavior. Now, that was one instance and we have a long way to go but we are laying a foundation. It’s amazing.

This is a very sweet book about how your behavior impacts you and those around you. Some books about behavior are dry and not very interesting to kids. This books holds my daughter's attention and she likes the story. I have been reading this to her (she's four), and her behavior has definitely improved. It has given our family new language to use when talking about how we want to treat others. We now ask each other "how full is your bucket" and we are all looking for ways to fill each others bucket. It will definitely stay in heavy rotation at our house.

We bought this book because my daughter's VPK teacher sent it home with each student to read and then return. We read it the night we got it from her and then again the next morning. It is a must have for every family with such an amazing message of truth that we all should remember.

I like the concept and I ordered two or three bucket filler type books for my child. But I personally did not like this one. It might be okay for older children vs younger. I thought the first few situations presented actually might teach her ways to be unkind and rude - name calling etc. I did like a different bucket filler book that had a more positive take on things.

Read this to my daughter every few nights. She has really taken to this story and look at other's differently. She thinks about how she treats people and if she's adding or taking away from their buckets. She can also tell me now that something I said or did affected her bucket. Very cute story.

Greg is a very thoughtful and engaging author. Each chapter is full of wisdom and thought provoking ideas. He is right that Mormonism is a life altering experience. The book is an easy read without heavy doctrinal orthodoxy.Frank Thornton

I have been completely engrossed, reading this book and re-reading out loud to my family. So many relevant and thought-provoking issues are explored with important connections to scripture. I believe many Church members will recognize their own thoughts and feelings about how we should truly live our faith and follow Christ’s example.

I’m not familiar with his blog or any other writings he may have done. Nevertheless I enjoyed this book as he pinpoints some important concepts in the church. Some good and some needing correction. His accuracy in naming things that are now being officially addressed by the leaders of the church is amazing.An enjoyable read! Well written with some modern verbiage thrown in with tremendous testimony. All leading to an easy book to read and ultimately to say “Amen”!

I finished reading your book last night. It was fun to read because you lay it all out very well. You are brave to be willing to state your love for the Lord and the unwavering belief that the Mormon Church is the only true church established by our Savior and restored by the Prophet Joseph Smith. I believe that is what it means to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. We need more people like you. Our stories need to be shared and spread to the world. My grandson is in Mongolia (who would have thought) doing just that for the next two years.I loved the chapter on Polygamy which has always been my belief in monogamy. I'm not so sure about the Coming Revolution Inside Mormonism as I don't see in Utah what you might be seeing in California. (I'm not a native.) Anyway, your book was not really about that, in my opinion. The best thing about your book was that it was personal. You weren't afraid to disclose yourself. That is always a good read, especially when many of the Church books are about changing ourselves which you seem to have already accomplished (I realize you are not yet perfect as none of us are). Keep up the good work. Thanks for writing the book.

I enjoyed reading this book but the characters were unrealistic at times. I especially didn't like the way the young girl Elise was ignored. Of course I realized why when I came to the end of the book. The writer just wanted to have a Volume 2. Still, the main character Sophie said she would help Elise but never did much to help except help fight the demon which a little too ridiculous for my taste. I like gothic romance but this goes to a whole different level from gothic to totally unbelievable especially the scene with the blood dripping room with blood saturating Sophie and the whole room! I disliked the ending of the book so much that instead of making me want read Volume 2, it made me want to write this review to say that I think the writer is just into gore to shock the readers and keep them wanting to buy Volume 2 etc. Not this reader! Also, the book was way too expensive for the quality of writing. When the book ended, I felt like I'd been ripped off!

Darcy Coates has a wonderful style of writing. Her vocabulary is diverse (but doesn't feel like she used a thesaurus without understanding the meaning of the words...) and the imagery created through her descriptions makes you feel like you are watching a movie instead of reading a book! Even if I didn't care for the story, I would applaud her writing. I wasn't sure if I would care for a ghost story for fear that it would be ridiculous and over the top. The story, however, was intriguing and addictive...making for a couple long nights with little sleep. Also, I started looking over my shoulder in the dark - so silly, but a testament to the quality of the story. As soon as I finished the book I was online purchasing the second book in the series!

This was an odd Romance thriller. I could barely finish it. I kept thinking it might get better, but I was sorely mistaken. I really don't understand the positive reviews. I don't believe there are any real spoilers below.1. It was an odd Romance. We open with the two characters having a marriage of convenience, and they never consummate the marriage. In the entire book. Towards the end, at ten days of marriage, they make out on a picnic. To clarify, I don't think all romances need sex. I don't mind a romance with no sex if it fits or a G-rated a fade-to-black suggestion of intimacy. What is weird about it is that neither character really references it and they are married for 10(wish) days and the book ends with everyone chaste and there was plenty of opportunity. As a new bride, one would expect an emotional response (relief, disappointment, inadequacy, insecurity, curiosity, resentment, sexual tension, worry about no children) to never having her new husband visit her bed, but this entire scenario is never even mentioned. The reader never even hears from the husband why he doesn't visit her. At one point, he does say he doesn't want kids, but you would expect more feedback from her. It is all just very awkward. There is almost not chemistry. Maybe that is why the no sex?2. Sophie starts out being admirable and likeable, but as the story goes on, she seems to lose more gumption than she gains. She is also at times irrationally fearful of her husband, who literally does nothing that should scare her. He seems more concerned for her than anything else, and yet she seems to constantly fear him when he has done nothing to deserve that response. And why does she not talk to him about the odd treatment of the villainous members of the household? He is never anything but understanding and asks to be told so he can keep her same. It is completely irrational.3. For a Ghost story thriller, I expected the creepy crawlies up my spine and the goosebumps. No. It was all lacking the same chemistry as the relationship. It was all just awkward and weird and almost nothing was resolved in the end.4. The end was almost too existential to make sense. It was poorly explained and poorly executed.

My first by Coates, and I do plan on getting House of secrets. I am not a fan of The Walking Dead so that particular slant on this story I was rolling eyes at. But I love gothics so the old mansion, the unlikely romance , and the odd supporting characters were of interest to me. Note to many who have posted claiming that the protagonists did not consummate their marriage- au contraire! It was consummated, the night ( SPOILER) Sophie stayed in Josephs room , after Marie " died". After he tells her the truth about Everything. Just because a sex scene isnt right there in the reader's face , doesn't mean it didn't occur ! I love that - makes it even more like the Gothic romances I used to read , by P.A. Whitney or Victoria Holt. Less is more

I don't usually read books of this type - subject matter - but once I started it I was curious enough to want to continue reading it. By the end of the book, realizing that there was a second book, I jumped on it. It leaves off where Book 1 ended. This first book had already caught my interest so I was excited about continuing the story. If you are in to reading this genre, I think you will enjoy it. There were several twists and turns although most were able to be figured out. I did find that I changed my mind on a few characters as I continued to read.

Overall this book was fine but there’s not much character background or development to make me want to continue with the second book in the series -especially since it centers on Elise who was largely ignored in the first book. Sophie is a weak lead character, always bending to the will of her husband’s aunt, and it was a bit implausible how she could fall in love so quickly & trust her husband so blindly considering all of the horrible circumstances occurring. I’ve read most of Darcy Coates’s books and enjoyed them, but this one was definitely one of my least favorite. Still though, if you’re looking for a fast beach read and you don’t mind a weak female as the lead, then it’s an entertaining enough story to pass the time.

Good story. I loved gothic romances when I was younger and this is very reminiscent of them. Thrown in is supernatural horror. I had to smile when reading because this book was so like the stories I loved. I would recommend, especially if you loved gothic romances. Enjoy
